I'm thinking of getting a hamster for my daughters and so far by reading everything I'm kind of afriad of getting a dwarf hamster.I guess what I'm going twards is, would a dwarf hamster be a good pet for a skittish 12 year old and a somewhat skitish 13 year old, or should i get a regular size hamster?

I have a dwarf hamster and she is sooooo sweet! I used to be skittish when i ferst got her but now i am completely comfy around her. I reccomend a russian dwarf. GOOD LUCK!

I recommend a dwarf but if their first time then a Syrian because their a lot easier to handle but Dwarfs are great too they have more of a loving spirit and more active too...

Dwarf hamsters can be pretty fast and harder to handle. I recommend a teddy bear hamster. I have one and i love her! She has never bit me befor and is relaly easy to handle.

Hi there Courtney!

You are right! Dwarf hamsters are not recommended as first pet because they are small, faster than Syrian hamsters, that making them harder to tame.

It's best to buy your kids a Syrian hamster for starter and then, after a year or after you are sure your kids can handle a smaller hamster, buy them a dwarf hamster.

Be careful:

*Don't keep ore than one Syrian hamster in a cage. this may lead to fights and even the death of one hamster. Syrian are very territorial and not quite sociable. But they love human company.

*When you buy the hamster. if it's a female, make sure she's not pregnant. this is quite unpleasant, especially if you didn't have hamster before.

Good luck and contact me if you have any more question. You can find the answer to some of your questions on my hamster website listed below.
