I have 3 russian dwarf hamsters, one just had a litter, and I found that she was more aggravated, ie nippy when she was pregnant, my other female is now behaving in the same way.

on the other hand my male is extremely gentle and loving, and sits in my hand. I think that female Dwarfs are more wild then the males, but thats just in my experience. :)

im sorry to hear that your chinese hamptser is mean and hisses at you. my boyfrined and i have owned 2 female chinese dawarf hamptsers for 5 months now. neither have bitten or hissed at us. for the first couple of weeks they wouldnt let us pick them up. but every since then they let us pick them up and play with them all the time, as long as we let them back on their wheels after awhile. maybe you jsut got really unlucky and got a mean one.

My female dwarf bit me when i held it. Then it just kept wanting to bit me so i dont grab it anymore. Im kind of scared of it so i just hold the male he dosent bite me he just licks me or nibbes me so he o.k.

Hamsters are such docile animals, life would be so dull without them! Cheers from www.hamster-club.com

I just got a robo dwarf 3 weeks ago and she was very active and playful at first, always on the wheel and running around, probably because she was nervous and scared. Whenever I try to touch her, she'd always runs away really, really quickly! I can never pet her or play with her!! However starting this week, she is not as active as before anymore. She is always sleeping, day and night, and barely moves at all!! When I try to touch her, she'd still jump and run away, but I am very worried if she's sick or she's lonely because she is always sleeping in the corner of the cage. Please let me know how I can make her feel better, or to tame her. Thanks!!

Selina, robos are the fastest breed of all hamsters. Do not expect them to play with you from the begging.

You can actually tame her by giving her food from your hand, letting her smell you, talk to her gentle and other things like that.

If you suspect she might be ill, take her to the vet because they are small animals and sometimes it's hard or even impossible to treat some affections if not discovered in time.

Hamsters are crepuscular and that is what they primarily do:sleep during the day and only wake up to chew something or to run in the cage.

Hope this answer helps. If you need more assistance please do contact me at the mail address on my website- I am not allowed to publish it here.

A hammy day and good luck!

Hi - my children have just got some hamsters about a month ago. In one cage we have 3 female (well we were told that) drawft chinese and in the other cage 2 male robos. The two boys are fine - although they do fight together a bit - but haven't bitten anyone. Not that you can catch them to hold them for a bit anyway!

But last night I made a real gruesome discovery in the females cage. Of the three, one was slightly bigger and a bit more dominant and active. She would be the one to nip your hand if you tried to hold her. Anyway, the night before she was fine, climbing her cage hanging upside down! But when I checked them last night, I had found her body - half eaten! The other two hamsters seemed fine. Now obviously I can't tell which other hamster did it or why .... But has anyone heard of this sort of thing happening before. I know that they can be a bit aggressive, but this is really upsetting. I haven't told my daughter yet - she will be really distraught. What should I do.

I was wondering what your email is Christina, since I've been breeding dwarf hamsters for about a year now, and one thing I don't understand is why my female is attacking her mate.

This same even occured with my first pair, and I wasn't sure what to make of it but thought it might be natural. Now with this second pair, it seems more aggressive and I'm worried for the males' health.

Hello, I have a Russian Dwarf Hamster. His name is Roni and is really cute. ilove him very much but there is one thing that i don't like..... HE NIPS. I have never had the feeling of him nipping at me because I pull my finger alway really fast. Sometimes when I hold him all he does is open his mouth and just put his teeth up against my finger. Is that good? Does that mean he is getting used to me? I never have time to play with him because I have a lot of homework each night. My friends and Daddy have had the experience of Roni nipping them. Do I have to play with him everyday for himm to get used to me? Before I hold him I am scared he might bite me. Do they sence the fear? If you have any advice I really need it!! I LOVE hamsters but I am scared of mine. PLEASE HELP ME!I want to have fun with him but I am scared. P.S If I wake up Roni will that cause him to bite me? He always bites himself, is that normal? PLEASE HELP. Lauren

i just got two robo hamsters. i left for a short while and when i came back, they had rebuilt their cage into a mini starship. as i winced unbelievably, they both threw eachother some daps, exlaimed loudly at me that i was a puny human and i was their pet. then the afterburners fired, and they blasted off never to be seen again. is normal behavior for these breed of hamsters?

Comment #66 meeeeeeeeeeeee (90.200.10.127) -

about a year ago, I decided to get a robo dwarf hamster. my boyfriend bought it for my 20th bday. I did a lot of research, read multiple websites, and made sure I'd be able to fully take care of it. after having joon for about two months, I realized she seemed lonely. she was calm and sweet & loved to be held, but was still a little wild like most of the robos.

I went back to the pet store & asked about possibly getting another female of her family to keep her company. I asked if there would be any fighting or problems keeping them in the same cage & the lady was very assuring that while they may squabble somewhat at first, they should be fine together but if I experienced problems, I could just seperate them.

so, I bought juliet or jules as I ended up calling her. basically, they never fought. joon was much more timid, but they got along fine. jules was very wild and jittery, but they seemed to care for each other. well, this morning, my boyfriend discovered joon dead in their cage with most of her head/face mauled. jules had dry blood on her face, because she attacked and killed joon.

I played with them regularly, had little rolling balls that they played in the living room in constantly and never saw any signs of real aggression. there were maybe two or three occassions where we heard minor squeaking from the cage, but never anything like this. I'm pretty sad and upset...mostly because the pet store associate knew they were aggressive but acted like it would be no big deal and seemed to know a lot about robos...so I took her advice, which apparently was a huge mistake. as far as I can tell, they can act fine for a year or more but they usually end up killing each other for whatever reason. had I known this, I would have just kept joon and not purchased another. when I researched it, I had mixed signals. books said they were social and friendly, but some sites said they were aggressive.

so, jules is now fine, she's been acting a little strange because she seems to understand that joon isn't in the cage anymore...but other than that, she's playing on her wheel...etc.

could she be sick or is it just nature?

thanks guys.
