I have a hamster named Rosie and she keeps biting my sister but not me I know its not like Rosie because shes never has bitten someone before is it here age shes only 6 months old I do want another hamster though so Rosie have a friend to live with also my sisters have hamsters too and she loves them but they came 4 months after her so I think she would be fine with a new hamster. Some advice for that kid who said Winter Whites are the meanest hamsters Kiss my butt they are not they are one of the sweetest and I think smartest because mine is potty trained and does not jump off of the table if shes on it...

Naddy well hamsters sometimes bite but some how my hamster was trained at the store so she is very tamed but hamsters are sometimes bullied at pet stores by others so they turn mean but I have talked to a guy and he says also some are born develish but its not necessarly Dwarfs every hamster could be born like that but the guy said the nicest type that his like the best buddy is a Robo dwarf hamster but I do recomend shes gets to hold it befor shes gets or You to see if it bites or not just wash your hands so it dosent think your hands food..

If you have any more questions just write a message on this

Your welcome Good luck:)

i got a robo dwarf hamster a few months ago and she does not bite shes real sweet but if i put my hand near her she runs away as fast as she can. and if i pick her up she instantly tries to get out of my hand and run away. i dont know what to do? how do i get her like my lil sisters hamster. hers is soo calm w/ her she will just let it out on her bed and it just walks around exploring. it never tries to get away. how do i get mine like that?

Most Roborovskii hamsters don't like to be handled- I've had 6 of them now, only got 1 at the minute. And only 2 of those would let me handle them without wriggling around or being scared.

I've had my current one (Nibbler) for a while, and he doesn't like being handled. So I'm putting him into a box, and setting my hand down and not moving it at all, so he can get my smell and climb all over my hand.

Put some sunflower seeds in as well- they absolutely love them.

Hope that helps, otherwise they're still excellent for spectating :D

robo hamsters can never be tamed?

I heard that if u fill its cage with tissue for a while and let them get used 2 the smell and u put a tissue over your hand they would go on it.

have u ever tamed any of your robo hamsters?if so how?

well, i guess if i was in her situation id be scared too after all they are the smallest hamster.

all of the petshops i whent to siad that robo hamsters are the best to get that they r really nice and after a few days they would let u hold them without jumping away.

im scared to hold her because she jups high and she runs really fast!

what is the best type of cage to put her in?

the first day i got her she was climbing all over the walls of it, then the 2nd day she squeased through!

i just want her to trust me enough to let me hold her.

and websites i go to say that u should let her run around my room, i dont know if thats a good idea?

Should i take her back and get a syrain hamster. this is my first hamster. she has been really hard to tame and its been atleast 3 months.

I Bought a little baby syrian Girl hamster about a month ago and then she was 8 weeks old i got her and the next day i tried to handle her and she was fine but the longer the days we have her the more she is aggressive and tries to bite, I tried to change her food and she rushed out her house and bit me !!! she runs around her cage really really quick when she knows your going to approch her she also gets really excited when she sees our boy hamster that is also a syrian .. we dont usually keep them next to eachother in their cages because our girl goes so hypa , I dont no why she is so agressive towards me ? the first week she was fine and was lovely and she didnt bite or nothing she let you handle her !! Is this because she wants to mate with the boy hamster ?? ...

Okay, so i am thinking of getting a dwarf hamster for me and my little brother and sister. My little brother is scared of almost everything and we all want one each and i didn't know if maybe getting two hamsters instead of three dwarf hamster would be better.

The only place i can really get a hamster is at feeders and petsmart, but i would love to have a winter white dwarf hamster but both places told me that they really don't get them in. i have also read that you could get them through breeders i dont, know, or read of any breeders close to where i even live.

My mom said we might only be able to get two of the dwarfs depending how scared or jerky my brother would be with holding a hamster, because when their not home i have to take care of them and tame them. So all in all, would it be better to get us all one or two dwarf hamsters or just one hamster. Maybe you know of some place i could find a good breeder of winter whites, in Louisville, KY.

[me and my mom would like to know please.]

email me please!!

Thanks for the help!

No problem! First, buy a book or read online stuff; your child should begin with the panic-stricken little thing only when you have taught it that people are pretty nice. Remember, in nature everything that isn't a hamster, probably eats hamsters--and we are hundreds of times bigger.

We have one thing they want: food. They don't want to play, be petted, or sunbathe (no direct sun at all is best), and they're nocturnal--awake all night, sleep all day. So, get some unsalted unroasted sunflower seeds and/or pumpkin seeds and/or peanuts. Tastes differ; mine hate peanut butter but love a half a grape. But all seem to like the rich seeds.

Next, arrange the guy's cage so that you can reach in the top and put your hand down on its back, flat with fingers up (so he can walk onto the palm). If you're tight for space, let your hand curl naturally and put your fingers down, with the middle part flat for him to walk on. Get comfortable with it; you're going to use this once or twice a day, and be patient. Always rinse your hands and don't use lotion before going to the cage.

Half-shell a sunflower seed; peanuts need to be broken up, about 1/4 is a treat; pumpkin seeds can be cut in half with a single-edge razor blade, feeding 1/2.

Put two or three treats on the part of your hand that is easiest for him to reach. Put your hand down and leave it until he comes and at least smells it. That's enough, but don't move your hand until he moves away from it; leave the treats on the floor of the cage in that spot. Next day, put fresh treats where he can smell them on your hand, and keep working toward having him walk right onto your hand to get the food.

At first, I could feel him trembling--literally shaking with fear--when he would climb on my hand. After a few days he calmed down a little, and I worked with him twice a day. When he stopped shaking, I started moving my and a little, and then a little more, until he finds my curved hand a great safe place to be. If something scares him, I cover it with the other hand, cupped, to give him a little cave.

I also fed a treat through the cage bars, and the door in the side of it, so that he gets another association with hands and being fed. I used my voice in a baby-talk phrase or two whenever I approached (their vision is terrible but hearing and smell are great). I woke him up talking, opening the drape and the cage, and offered a treat from my finger and thumb (without touching him). Pretty soon he'd wake up and come to the door whenever I 'called' him, or opened the drape to let in light.

I keep their cages in a bookcase, so that I can close a soft fabric mini-drape during the day. This prevents drafts, rapid temperature change, and if you keep a damp washcloth there, the humidity will be more like their underground homes.

This approach--non threatening, no forcing, offering only what they want until they come to you--works on thousand-pound horses and three-ounce dwarf hamsters. And people. All of them bite, one way or another, but if you're clever and add on new things very slowly, they'll recognize you as the bringer of good things . . and you know, they don't bite the hand that feeds. Good luck!

I have noticed that Marry the mother of our other hamsters has been biting alot lately. Can she be stressed, or is she just frightened, or maybe is she being defense because of the other hamsters?

Hi

I have 2 Russian Dwarf hamsters and its the first time i ever had hamsters.

I have had them for approx a month now.

Both my hamsters i can hold and especially one of them feel more happy with being hold and crawl around on me compared to the other.

They both bite sometimes, but not as often as in the beginning. They are getting more and more used to me.

I have to say i spend a lot of time with my ones, speak with them a lot, they are out in each their ball running around atleast 2 times a day.

When the Ball run is done I let them walk out of the ball directly on to my flat hand and none of them bites doing this. This way they are getting used to be handled and get used to my smell and bodyheat.

The only times they bite are when they have been out and have been in the hand and i try and pet them in the cage afterwards - I think they might "say" - Enough is enough... which i do respect.

One of the hamsters (the one who bites more than the other) has diabetes and have very bad bad eye sight and the wet said he will eventually go blind. I think the reason why he has been biting more is because he have had seeing issues since i got him.

I dont think that the dwarf hamsters can really be blamed for following their instinct's -they have limits too, thats simply nature.

I believe a lot of people get these dwarfs as they are so cute when you first look at them and expect them to just "like" everything and be the easiest cuddle pets.

I do believe that only people with understanding for the critters natural behaviour should consider buying them, as they need carefull handeling due to being very delicate. If you want them tame you also need a good deal of patience, understanding of the critters natural behavior and spend a lot of time with them.

There are a lot complaning about them getting bitten by the dwarf hamsters - Honestly it might be a bit sore (i have been bitten so there was blood) but how much pain can a tiny animal like them actually cause - we are not speaking rabbits or cats/dogs here.

If your one of the complaning ones - spend more time and stop being afraid of getting bitten - if you do not handle your critter it will for sure never get tame.

I would not recommed to children as they sometimes can be a bit rough with animals and withbeing delicate like the dwarfs can be fatal for the animal.

I love them both, Igor & Mogens to bits and they are both cute, funny and have karacter.

Thanks for reading this and hope it make sense.

Love and Light

were they born in the same litter? if they wernt thats your reason. hamsters fight with other hammys if they wernt raised with them u could probaly put a plastic clear devider in the same cage and let them get used 2 each other i reccomend letting them be in a different cage zfor a wile until they cool down....

good luck and i hope they stop fighting

I've bought 2 hamsters, and 2 gerbils. I have them in separate cages of course. But the male hamster I've introduced to the female who is slightly larger. At first they were getting along just fine, and now he's attacking her for no reason. He'll go over there, and get a really good grip on her then pull. He doesn't really rip her flesh, it almost seems like he's trying to make his dominance known? Now when he gets that way she'll freeze and just stand in one position letting him inspect her. I've tried separating them but the female seems depressed when I do because she stops eating. I don't get it. Is this normal behavior between male and females? I've had many hamsters over the course of my life, and had many 'couples' and loads of litters but none of the other male hamsters showed this amount of aggression. The ironic thing is, they're both super sweet and you can hold them for a long time.

hello again! i am naddy m--i was comment #28 on the above list. i got a robo dwarf hamster. i was worried about it being mean--but actually robo dwarfs are very very nice. but one thing-DONT USE WOOD CHIPS FOR DWARF HAMSTERS! right now my hamster, oobu, has a punture in his chest. from a wood chip. he is on antibiotics right now and is doing much better. but the vet said that woodchips on dwarf hamsters can cause many respitorial and heart problems. if anyone has any questions about their dwarf hamsters please email me at naddy411@msn.com. thanks!
