hi,

i'm interested in purchasing an alligator turtle. i'm wondering what the costs are for either the alligator turtle or the common snapper turtle. also, i'd like to know how big they are. hope to hear from you soon.

thanks,

nicole

Nicole,

I keep Alligator Snappers and Florida Snappers. The Alligator Snappers, full grown, can weigh up to 200 lbs (largest freshwater turtle in the world) and have a bite that can easily remove a hand. They are cute at 4 inches :).... If you have never kept a snapper before I would suggest either a common snapper or a Florida snapper. They both still get very large, but they can't do as much damage (you may only lose fingers :)).. They are very interesting turtles if you take proper care of them and around them. Look around on the web and you'll find people who are selling them... Check Kingsnake.com classifieds and also check their site for local reptile shows... Be aware there are SPECIFIC guidelines for states where they are endemic, so check and make sure they are legal where you live...

"Snapping turtles make great pets!"

I have kept a large snapping turtle as a pet before. They make great and interesting pets! The best enclosure to keep them in is an enclosed pond or a kiddy pool. A varied diet is important. It is very important as well to not keep them with other turtles (including other snapping turtles). The snapping turtle is infamous for snapping off limbs of other turtles. If you keep them inside (which I don't recommend) and you use a heater, you need to keep the water very clean or bacteria will breed in the water and could cause a "red leg" infection. This is a bacterial infection that normally affects amphibians but can affect reptiles. I don't recommend using substrate such as gravel in the enclosure if you choose to use a kiddy pool or a large aquarium. It makes the frequent cleanings difficult. Good luck!
