I don't think they are damaging the rabbits, just annoying the heck out of them and I'm afraid the rabbits will tear their skin open and get infecitons. Comment #1 lily from deep south - I am not sure if there is something over the counter you can use. I think you might have to take your pet to the vet and let them give you drops for their fur. Comment #2 Kal (71.194.9.205) - I recently took my bunny in because he had irritated skin and, as suspected, he had fur mites. It can be painful and increasingly unhealthy for any rabbit, especially over time, and is recommended that the animal(s) be treated for the mites right away -- you would treat your dog for fleas, wouldn't you?! That said, my vet provided a shot to help prevent the parasites from surviving and doused my rabbit with a anti-mite powder bath of somesort. This will kill the living adults, but the eggs will still be in his fur. That said, this will all take two-three treatments to remedy, but I'm sure he'll be much happier for it! Of course your bunnies are going crazy -- imagine having hundreds of microscopic mosquito bites, with eggs under your skin, and creepy crawlies in your fur! It's been described to me as a feeling like never ending razor burn! Comment #3 sheena_UST from Philippines - in our thesis we would be using crotamiton (EURAX) as our positive control. selamectin is also used against rabbit mites Comment #4 leayann Tilston (82.112.132.201) - hi just read the question about the fur mites and my lop ear rabbit had them an i took him to the vets and they gave him one injection that went into his blood and a couple of days later he was completely clear. However if you leave them they can destroy the skin and the fur, so it would be better to sort it out as soon as it is noticed. Comment #5 Julie Akers (71.1.154.14) - I have a herd of 50 rabbits and for the first year not one problem (or so it seemed.) Comment #6 Merl Elton (69.255.237.181) - What is the best and quickest way to treat mites on rabbits? How do they get mites? Thanks Comment #7 Jill Holyoak (195.93.21.69) - My rabbit recently suffered from fur mites, a patch of his skin was dry with large white flakes. A visit to the vet cost me £47, she perscribed my bunny a droplet treatment called Xeno 450, which I have found available online for £16 !! Comment #8 architechsupport from Nova Philippines - can you buy selamectin over the counter?
