My Bad Hare Days as campaigner for Animal Protection

On the subject of rabbits generally, I have recently had published my memoir, entitled Bad Hare Days, of the anti-bloodsports "campaign trail" in Ireland...telling the story of my sometimes literally hair-raising involvement in the campaign against the so-called "sport" of live hare coursing, in which both hares and rabbits are used in cruel games called coursing events, held for gambling purposes and human amusement.

The hares are snatched from their natural homes in the countryside and taken to large wired enclosures where they serve as live lures to be pursued by greyhounds.

Many hares are killed or injured in these obnoxious events, and rabbits are used to train the greyhounds before the official coursing events.

I've written my book Bad Hare Days (Olympia Publishers), to tell the world of this peculiar "pastime" here in Ireland that most Irish people oppose but that a small powerful politically well-connected minority has been able to preserve and promote as what they perceive to be a "healthy outdoor recreation".

I describe the ups and downs of campaigning, and the sometimes daunting challenges we campaigners faced in our bid to champion the cause of the gentle hare and the timid wild rabbit.

I'm surprised and heartened by the response to date from other animal protection campaigners in various countries, many of whom can, they tell me, readily identify with my own experience of taking on powerful forces on behalf of creatures that can't speak up for themselves.
