Pet Rescue - Pet Rescue Note to pet rescue groups |

First of all, thank you for everything you do. You're heroes to a lot of abused and unwanted animals. But I've been looking to adopt a cat over the past several weeks, and I've finally decided to get one from a private family rather than a rescue group. Virtually every rescue group I tried to deal with treated me with doubt and suspicion because I'm a single working person living in an apartment (which DOES allow pets). And just trust me when I say that I'm really not a shifty character at all. I understand that this approach stems from the desire to send these animals to the best possible homes. I realize that a family with their own home where somebody's around all day is probably the ideal setting for most pets. But with all the pets out there that need homes, you'd think a life in my apartment would be better than life in a cage or euthanasia due to overcrowding. I would have liked to help one of these pets, but I got sick of the runaround. All I'm saying is that maybe more rescued animals would find homes if the process weren't so discouraging for potential adopters.

As part of that community, let me just apologize that you went through that experience. I know that the orgainzation I'm affiliated with is not strict but they try to match the best animal with an adopter. It's sad that some places try to police their animals. Although, I've seen the other end of that where private sales of animals can go horribly wrong. Some are really good. There's good and bad in everything. Research is the key. I understand where you are coming from at the same time, don't let it turn you off from all humane socities and animal shelters. While you had bad experiences with a shelter, understand, the shelter is a stressful place for animals and workers. This obviously varies place to place. I can only speak from what I know from our shelter(s), rescue and law enforcement depts. do on a daily basis.
