We almost went an adopted a dog that was left behind when Hurricane Katrina happened. We saw it on tv and looked it up on the website and everything. I live in NY and all the dogs at that point were all still down south and they didn't know when they would be able to get them up here for people to adopt. Those poor animals left alone to fend for themselves. It was sad for everyone involved in the hurrican but my heart always cries for helpless animals. Did anyone get involved in the pet rescue during Katrina or know someone that did? I would love to hear stories about it.

I was there all winter.I suggest you buy a copy of 'Dark Water Rising' (darkwaterrising.com/), or the PBS documentary about Katrina animal rescues (www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/katrina/), or 'Eye to Eye' (not released yet - www.cavestudio.net/). I also suggest you consider going down to New Orleans to help out the local rescue organizations like 'Southern Animal Foundation', 'Animal Rescue New Orleans', and 'Alley Cat Allies'. THE DISASTER ISN'T OVER FOLKS! There are still TENS OF THOUSANDS of cats & dogs starving on the fetid streets of New Orleans more than a year after Katrina. The rescue groups are doing what they can but they can't keep up with the death, starvation, or breeding. Help them by donating to NO-KILL (!) rescue groups or by spending a long weekend actually helping feed, care for, and rescue Katrina survivors.

It's sad. People there have enough to do just to put their own lives in order. Families were split up and went to different shelters in different states and many were relocated all over the US and they couldn't take their pets with them. They had no choice but to leave them behind and now those animals have to fend for themselves. Since then the rules for disaster evacuation have been changed to allow for the animals to be rescued and relocated with their owners as much as possible. So we are learning but it's a slow lesson that has come too late for many of the animals of New Orleans. At this point with the contamination of the city, many of the animals rescued will have to be put down as they are too sick to cure and rescue efforts have to concentrate on saving those they can.

I was in Mississippi and Louisiana for 6 weeks. I actually appear in many of the videos that 'Catlike from home' speaks of. It was very much an experience. One I hope not to revisit, however, seems lately, the midwest is having some problems..., I may be busy again. Then again, I always am...
