Can someone direct me to an animal shelter in the central valley area of Costa Rica?

I will be living in Atenas, Costa Rica next month and I am interested in obtaining a pet for my home. I am primarily looking for a shih tzu due to their non-allergic qualities. Can someone please help me locate an animal facility, shelter, breeder, vet in the Atenas area? (San Jose, Escazu, etc). Thank you for your prompt reply!!

Help! ASAPWe live in Tambor. My mother left Costa Rica and I have to find a home for her dog. I tried to get it spayed but it had a skin condition (she was rescued from the beach). The vet said that he couldn't do the opporation until we treated the infection. While we were treating her she got pregnant and we now have 9 puppies to find homes for. The mama is medium sized with black and brown spots and very short hair. The expected father is also medium sized white with large black spots. Almost all the puppies have short hair like their mama. I have asked for help at the local vets to find them homes with no luck. We have asked all our friends. Those who like dogs already have them and don't want more. To make matters worse 6 of them are female so Ticos don't want them or their mama. I love animals but we already have three dogs of our own, plus three cats and a raccoon. We don't have the room for the mama and her puppies or the money to feed them all. Is there anyone out there who can help us find a home for them?? The puppies are 6 weeks old the perfect age for adoption.

Dear Michelle, I just recently visited Costa Rica near San jOse and saw a lost brown and black spotted female dog that recently had puppies that was completely bones and lost. I was on a tour bus and only able to toss it the only food I had on me which was a banana. The poor starving animal gulped the banana up without hestitation. I was only in Costa Rica for a few hours and on my way out when I saw this animal. I surely hope it wasnt the mamma you talked about. Is there any type of rescue organization in your country that you have found out about.

Just a quick note, I'm coming down in late Oct. If any rescue agencies need anything from the U.S. PLEASE contact me and I will bring it down. I will be travelling through San Jose (of course) to Arenal and down to Quepos. I try to pack what I can for our four legged friends but if anyone needs anything specific please let me know and I'll bring it.Thanks to those who open their hearts Dale

Why not try the Costa Rica Forum... might be less stuff about pets but more people in, from and going to Costa Rica.

About a week ago we were in Costa Rica and drove from Puntarenas to Monteverde. We left the highway, took the sideway and about 500 meters before the unpaved road which goes into the mountains, 5 extremely skinny dogs came running after the car. They were very hungry and we gave them some food as we did the next day and also when we returned to Puntarenas. I still do feel sorry for those poor dogs and doubt their possibility to survive since they clearly have no access to food. Does anyone know any possibility to help those dogs?

Today I was sent a very disturbing e-mail showing a dog being starved to death in an art exhibit in san jose costa rica. The so-called artist insists that he was just showing how dozens of starving dogs live on the streets there. Are there no animal shelters or programs to help these dogs? I signed the petition that will hopefully ban the next "exhibit"(he was invited to do it again if you can believe that!) The artist's name is Guillermo Vargas HabacucCan someone please give me more information that might help these poor innocent creatures? Are there any organizations I can contact? Thanks!

I received a shocking email today about an artist by the name of Guillermo Habacuc Vargas who displays starving dogs as art at an exhibit in San Jose, Costa Rica-which is also his hometown. I've attached the link to a blog petitioning against allowing this man to continue this horrible cruelty to animals. This is NOT ART. This is an injustice to these poor animals. This man needs to be prosecuted.

It may not be art, and it may be cruel... but it is Costa Rica.
