My racoon is about 3 months old. A wonderful joy and i love hims so much. Today i put him in his cage and he was fine. Being playfull, yelling at me when i put him in there and was wanting out. He was running around the house all day. Normal. I came back home about an hour later and the first thing i do is get him out of his cage. I noticed he was walking funny kinda slow. I figured he was groggy he just woke up. then i realized he was almost limping on his back leg. He was still walking slowly and when he got to the kitchen he layed on his belly with his arms out to the side still standing on his back legs like he couldn't use his front legs. I thought maybe they fell asleep as well. As time progressed it didnt' get any better. He will use them but then he lays on his belly again with his arms out to the side. When he is on the coutch he is on his back. Same when he is in his cage. He won't grab things like he did earlier. then he went in the bathroom sat in the corner on his hind end straigt up and his front arms were by is belly and they started to twitch. Then his hand like cramped up. He won't spread his fingers but he will walk on them. He grabs food out of his bowl and still eats. He drinks water. Its almost like he has some nerve damage. I checked his cage there was nothing that he could've ate or gotten into. He was fine. Earlier when i was trying to understand what his hands were doing i was trying to feed him grahm crackers, his favorite and he wouldn't eat them. After awhile he started eating them and was just having trouble holding them. Now i am worried all he wants to do is cuddle with a blanked in the dark and sleep on his back. he will play but like i said before its like his hands aren't working right. When he is in his cage he scoots barly walks. When he is out he walks on his feet. Now i'm scared to let him sleep he might not wake up. He's breathing normal and his heart rate isn't different. Please help me i am worried and he's like my baby. Any ideas??? Comment #1 remmblie (68.8.255.18) - they are kinda like children only fury and smarter they get tired and they can get cramps Comment #2 britney (65.4.57.84) - i have a baby raccoon who i about 5 weeks old. this mornig she began to i guess u could say it was kinda like a growl and a yelp so i got up and got her and she was brething hard and was shaking.she was kind of acting like she was in shock from something.then i got her and tryed to feed her and she wouldnt eat and i stayed up for a while with her and she continued to shake...but now she is acting like she is having ceasers...im not sure i spelled it correct.sorry....but i have no idea if she is or what is wrong someone please help because i love her very much and need know what to do. Comment #3 Jessie (72.81.133.66) - It sounds like your raccoon is having siezure's, you will want to get him/her checked by a vet. Comment #4 r sparks (24.116.127.73) - i have a raccoon that i have had for 4years now. it sounds like he may have got a little rowdy and maybe fell off on the side of his cage. if he landed wrong he could have pinched a nerve in his back or front shoulders. they do not land on their feet like a cat when they fall. he wants to sleep in a dark place because that is just natural instinct for an animal that feels bad to get in a dark place where they feel safe. just make sure that he keeps drinking. if he gets dehydrated at that age you could loose him in a matter of hours. just let him rest and dont handle him as often unless he is wanting to be held. a pinched nerve or pulled muscle would account for his legs spreading out. if it gets worse i would consider getting an anti-inflamatory med from your vet. but that is aboiut all that can be done if its something like that. hope this helps. • Page 1 (Original Post) •
