Dawn,

I am afraid that there is very little you can do other than take him to the vet/wildlife center, etc. Once this happens most raccoon babies die, without medical help. It is very important not to bottle feed with a nipple where the 'milk' flows to fast. Doing so will cause it to enter the lungs. Also feeding with the baby layed too far back will cause this and overfeeding will too. Feed just until the tummy starts to feel firm. Good Luck and I hope they make it.

Hi, A friend found a litter of orphaned raccoon kits and farmed them off to a few of us that would nurse and release them. Coons are not allowed in this state. What states allow them and is there a secret for their survival with regard to releasing them? Would love to find a refuge, zoo etc. that will take them but do not want to discuss with too many people. Any advice would be appreciated.

if you are going to take a raccoon a bath you must use tear free shampoo jhonsons tear free shampoo. and if your raccoon is sick just give it alot of rest and keep going on your daily basis feed it regular raccoon food and it shall be fine.

I am fostering 3 raccoons for release. The runt isn't very interested in food the last 2 days. He has only eaten little, but has drank water. He has played a little bit too. No noticable diarrhea.

There are lots of mosquitos, could the bites be affecting him?

He seems very depressed and is sleeping a lot (and its night time, they are usually very active at night)

I gave him some strongdid for de-worming. I have fed him seperate from the others so that they don't steal his share.

Any idea why he could be so depressed and not interested in food? This has happened once before for a day but it went away.

I think he is about 2-3 months old.

i have had a rescued racoon for about 4 (thats also about how old it is)months. She was was doing fine very active good personality. Suddenly she seemed meaner but just about bieng touched then she quit eating and now is so weak she can barly stand or walk. Might be coordination problems but i think its from not eating. It doesnt and i dont know if its because its sick or the not eating. All she does is drink so i crushed a vitimin up in her water and thats all shes living of of. would a vet treat her and does anybody have an idea whats shes got?

If anyone can help, we have a very sick raccoon. The onset was very quick, when we came home from dinner he was lying on the floor of his enclosure. It was clear that he had vomitted quite a bit, it looked like there might have been a little bit of blood in some of it. He's been having seizures, and last night was unresponsive to his name. This morning he was lying in a different spot, still on his stomach with limbs spread out. We don't want to move him since we have no idea what's wrong (our understanding is that parvo and distemper develop more slowly). He does lift his head and look at us when we call his name, but is still in poor shape. Any help would be greatly appreciated, we love him dearly!

For Bobbi, your raccoon was 7 years old. That's pretty old for a raccoon. Don't beat yourself up too much. For Wendy, cows milk is not good. Switch to KMR replacement formula. We used puppy formula. When they get to 8 weeks, switch to KMR step 2 and make a mash and serve on a paper plate.

For the Colorado lady, the raccoon was probably in torpor, which is somewhat like hibernating (though they don't hibernate). They'll wake up every so often and snack a little, but they sleep for long stretches. That is what they are supposed to be doing in the winter. And don't get too close to an adult wild coon. They have a heck of a bite.

We have a female that now lives outside. It likes a scratch every once in awhile, but it likes its space. We still feed it catfood. A neat animal.

I have a raccoon that we bought from a breeder. We have had him for three weeks now. He has had the runs for the entire time. It smells bad and looks like axle grease. We have taken him to the vet, she said nothing wrong with him and gave him medicine for it but he still has it. He is very active, eats good, clear eyes and is drinking plenty of water so he is not dehydrated. Any suggestions?
