Hello, I have a 2 1/2 year old pet Raccoon. He lives in the house and is an absolute joy to have. About 2 weeks ago I used flea shampoo on him that made him sick. He has ate just a bite here and there and acts like it effected his lungs. I cant take him to the vet because he is scared of anyone but me and my husband and I am scared it would not be good to stress him out. I was just wondering if anyone knows what type of antibiotic would be safe to give him. Vets dont like to help unless you bring them in and that is not possible. Thanks for any help....

|I live in the colorado rockies, and have found a racoon huddled in a little used entry way for warmth. He has not moved from the corner, but has eaten some dog food I have left for him. I have covered him with blankets and would like to do more but am unsure what is appropriate. I have called the local forrestry departments, but they are closed. Does anyone have any helpful suggestions? It gets as low as -19 degrees here at night and I would be very upset to find he passed away in the night, .

I have a sweet 10 month old, partially disabled raccoon.I've raised him since he was 2 weeks old.He has been fine although a picky eater which is unusual due to the ones I've raised before.My question is "How to control fleas on him safely but, effectively?"Also I might add he is a runt only weighing 4-5lbs.

raccoon approx. 7-8 weeks old. Large female had a big appetite has suddenly developed diarria and has lost appetite. Eyes clear, temp. good, still active but not like before. Has litter mate that is the runt, eating same diet, sleeping same cage doing fine. Am feeding kmr and offering apple slices and animal cookies at night. They usulaly eat 100 grams twice daily. Do I need to dilute formula, What?

okay guys I raise and breed Racccons and have been for many years. Brenda I don't know when you wrote your comment but this will probably help all who have raccoons. Your cooney does not need an antibiotic it's needs a good bath to get what ever you put on it off. A safe flea treatment for him would be to use a puppy treatment that is organic. It is totally chemical free another treatment is yeast tablets with garlic. You can get them at a pet store. No animal should have any kind of fleaa and tick treatment beore it is 12 weeks old. If you have a raccoon younger than that and it has fleas just bathe it with a gental puppy shampoo and then dry real good and comb with a flea comb.

To Amy this sounds harsh but for your safety you really need to leave the wild raccoons alone. A raccoon bite is very very painful and most of the time will cause problems even if you clean it right away. You did what you could and that is all you can do until you get a hold of Wildlife Dept.

To Mary get your raccoons off of KRM it is bad for them use this receipe 1 can goats milk, 1/2 can evaporated milk, 1 1/2 can nonchol. water, and 1 tablespoon plain unsweetened yogurt. Mix this all together and give it to them in bottle warmed up every four hours. They are to young to being fed only twice a day. If they get the runs add a bit more water, if they get constipated dip your finger in karo syrup and let them suck it off your finger.

A safe antibiotic is fishmox you can get it at pet stores. Generally you wouls mix half a capsule in milk and give to them if under 6 months and a whole capsule if over and you can mix it in some ice cream.

MARY USE THE KRM and some yogurt and feed them as there hungry. dont over feed them watch there tummys. i used a lil dog flea frontline for puppys one drop of oil on each.. to de flea my coons they are doing well.

I have several Raccoons that make their nightly vigil to me for fresh water and nuts, biscuits and a little catfood. Today has been a very stressful day as my Grey fox of four years collapsed in my garden. His wife, Mia, has not been seen. I went looking for feinsty, the gray fox I could not find him but found one of their cubs. They are all sick. I fear it is Distemper. Tonight I have a raccoon wondering around, he is extremely unwell. He walks very slow and both eyes are filled with glue. He cannot see at all. He has been feeding on the nuts and drinking the water. When he is finished I have to go out and remove everything including the water in the bowl and start again for the other Raccoons. I dont want to spread any infection but I fear it has already happened. Do I call animal control and get this sickly boy removed or do I try that Fishmox antibiotic and hope for the best. I fear for my other Raccoons and my fox cubs if not too late for them even now. Someone please advise I am banging my head against the wall here. Thanks.

Hi I am sure that the puppy formula for advantage or frontline will be fine for your 4 month old Raccoon. Frontline last for three months. so you dont have to put on every month for the ticks yes maybe, but for the fleas quarterly should be fine.

I successfully raised and released an orphaned raccoon. He survived a broken hip from a dog during the past winter and continued to live independently. In April he survived a spinal cord injury that left both rear legs weakened. I crated him again with the goal of rehab. He is having serious issues with fleas. What are the least dangerous and most reliable options?

my baby raccoon is around 9 weeks old and has a little bit of brown comming out in his pee. He also has a white discharge occasionally we were wondering if you might know anything about it.

We have a 7 month old male raccoon that we have raised since before his eyes were open. He lived inside until about 2 months ago and now he is outside. He has had a very good appetite his whole life until just a couple of days ago and now he doesn't want to eat or drink anything. He also does not want us to pet him or play with him, which is very strange. He isn't mean, but he just wants us to leave him alone. He doesn't look sick or act like he feels bad and he hasn't lost any weight. He normally eats dry cat food and we haven't changed the brand or type at all. What do I do?

Thanks for the heads-up on the Fish-mox. I have a young female raccoon with 2 babies. The babies aren't nursing anymore so I think it would be safe to use the fishmox on mom. Her eye is puffy like it was scratched, her other eye is clear and she has a good appetite. Her babies are also very healthy looking.

I have 3 pet raccoons. My males are brothers, 7 years old and I raised them from a bottle. One of them is sick. For a week now I have noticed that he won't eat. He seems to have forgotten how to drink water from his bowl or rabbit bottle. He will just put his paw in water and lick it off or lick it off my fingers. He has lost weight and his little eyes look sunken. He won't clean himself. His tail is lifeless and stays wet. I try to clean him but he won't let me touch his hind end. This morning I noticed he is breathing very loud. He just lies around and won't eat his favorite food or his favorite treats. He will just let me pet him and love on him, he seems to crave that.

What is wrong with him and what can I do for him? I am scared to death! I feel so hopeless because I can't seem to help him.

I am also wondering if whatever he has will spread to his brother and sister.

I am writing this Nov. 28, 2008. I hope someone will respond to this very soon as I am devastated by this.

i have a 2 1/2 male raccoon..he did the same thing when i took hem to the vet we found that he had distemper...it was a very hard fight but he DID survice it..keep him warm. and there is a vitamin supplement you can get at pet smart for dogs that wont eat..its in a gel form...try this..

my raccoon for the last two days is acting like he has a cold..all he wants to do is sleep and when hes up moving around he pants real hard but doesnt do this laying down..hes really now eating or drinking anything..does anyone have any suggestions

I posted in November 2008 about my pet raccoon, Merlin. He was sick. He died on December 4, 2008. He was tested for both distemper and rabies. He had neither.

He had been sick about 3 weeks. Had we treated him during the first few days with injections of antibiotics, he would still be with us today. We just didn't realize how serious it was and waited too long to call our vet. Please, if you think your pet is sick, call your vet as soon as you can. It may save your Raccoon's life.

We think Merlin had pneumonia. He breathed so loud and tired easily.

I hope this post might help someone save their pet's life.

I have a female coon that I rescued this last summer as a small baby. Over the winter I noticed that she has lost a lot of hair on her belly and chest and it seems to be spreading to her legs. I am not sure if this is normal or if she is having a health issue. I have researched mange but this doesn't really match with her symtoms because it usually begins on the shoulders or back according to my research. I can't take her to a vet because having racoons as pets is not allowed. if it is mange, any suggestions on how to treat would be appreciated.

i got a 11 month old male coon who very attached to mom i have never left him befor but i went on vacation a couple of weeks ago was gone 14 days when i came back he had a patch of fur missing on his butt well right above his tail ive been home for about a week and it seems to be getting worse is this caused from stress or should i be more concerned his eating habits are the same and his behaver has changed still my lovey coon.

I have a baby raccoon about 3-4 wks old who seems to be constipated...any suggestions? I'm bottle feeding him evaporated milk and water, half of each. Sometimes I add an egg yolk and/or corn syrup. The first 10 days he was ok but the last two, when he is done eating, he squeals and his tummy gets really tight. It lasts a few seconds then settles down for a minute, then it happens again. I have been stimulating him but it doesn't seem to help. I feel so bad for him but i'm at a loss of what else to try. I hope someone can help me with this. Thanks

I have 2 of 4 racoon kits(est.age 3-4 weeks old).The lil male is doing great. But since yesterday, lilfemale has had a crust eye and sounds a lil congested.Didnt eat as much today as she normally does. Does anyoneknow what this might be or mean?Will the lil male get this? Please help...

ive raised raccoons and let them loose. its been three years. well about a month ago my dad was cuting a limb and it fell in on my roon breaking the cealing. well now the raccoons have decided to live over my head and fleas have gotten in. how do i fix this mess ive a messy room.ideas please i iche. asiah
