Humane Society sold me a sick dog

Hello, I am trying to do some research online, but I'm really not finding alot on my topic. I adopted my 1 year old dog from the Humane Society in mid April 2009. When I bought him he was very underweight. I took him to the vet because he wasn't eating and he was having diarreha a lot. Turns out he had a bacterial infection, and he had had it for sometime. Cost about $100 for antibiotics. This problem went away very quickly. He seemed very happy and healthy. But just last month I noticed something wrong with his gums. On his left side his gums were so swollen and often bleeding. I went to a pet hospital and they believed it to be a tumor. They immidiately did surgery to remove it, it was very large and he was in much pain. They then sent some off to be tested and I got the results back and the vet told me he had a Malignant Melenoma or something along those lines, I am trying to get paperwork from that hospital right now. Point is, he said my dog has about the rest of this year to live. My 1 year old dog! The vet then told me that my dog most likely had cancer before I adopted him. This may be mean because I know the Humane Society lives off donations and such. But I want them to pay for this. All together within the past 4 months I have spent nearly $1, 000 dollars on this dog. I don't want to sue them or anything, I don't even know if I can. I just want to hear what other people have to say. Because I am really not finding information. I am extremely sad of all he has been through and all that I have been through to keep him healthy. Any advice or info is very much appreciated, thank you.

I'd get the vet documentation and written/signed statements from your vet stating that the dog was most likely ill before you bought him, and see if they'll reimburse you. Maybe take them to small claims court if they refuse? To be honest I've never been in a situation such as yours.

Even though they run on donations, that is no excuse to sell a sick animal to someone.

Sorry about your doggy. :(

"what a cry baby"

i cannot believe you can cry like a little girl. with all the good work that the humane society does. when you "rescue" an animal, you do so knowing that you may have unforseen problems, i have spent a small fortune in my life on my pets, and i couldnt afford it either. either you are commited to an animal or not. that is the measure of your love for a pet. and you just sound like a cry baby, grow up, that is the cost of loving an animal.

"problem"

I had a similar experience with a cat I adopted. They were not honest and forthcoming about the cat's medical history. Several weeks after I adopted her I noticed that she was peeing very small amounts about 20 times a day. I took her to the vet and it turned out she had 3 bladder stones. The surgery cost me $900 dollars, and the vet said that the cat must have had these bladder stones while she was still at the shelter. There was no mention about this in her medical file. I'm now 2 years into having the cat and I've paid about $3, 000 in vet bills for her. While I appreciate the work the humane society is doing, I've learned from this experience that they will not tell you how sick the animal is that you want to adopt. So be careful! I will never again adopt an animal from humane society.
