My dogs teeth are starting to get brown around her gumlines and a few have fallen out. She has always eaten Iams and she chews on the raw hides. I don't know if this is even preventable. Anyone else have the same issue with your pet.

We never had a problem with our family dog growing up. I'll have to ask my sisters and brothers if they have any problems. How old is your dog?

Do you brush your dog's teeth? Our vet told us as our dogs got older that their teeth would need to brush quite often. If you go to Petsmart they have a beef flavored toothpaste. My dogs tend to lick the toothpaste more than anything but I try my best to get them brushed. I do believe that as dogs get older this is a pretty common thing that goes on. Talk to you vet they can give you the best information on how to keep the dogs teeth as healthy as possible.

I have never heard of brushing your dogs teeth. She would probably squirm and I would have it all over her face. She is getting fairly old, 7 years old. But, her teeth have been like this for about 2 years now.

Ugh brushing the teeth? Heck i just did the bone chews. I certainly dont want to have to brush their teeth now lol.

Yes you can brush their teeth. You buy the toothbrush, which is usually something you slip on your finger, and everything else you need at your local pet store. My dogs hate it so I try to get them specialized treats like greenies that help with that.

Our dog is the same way. He won't let us brush his teeth and he hates rawhide! I am going to half to take him in and get them cleaned so they don't fall out.

Sorry to tell you this, Courtney, but from what you describe, it's time to take your dog to the vet for a cleaning. She will be anesthetized and her teeth will be cleaned while she's asleep. Then follow Lily's advice so you won't have to do that again too soon.

I have a 9 year old cocker spanier. I just noticed that one of his front teeth is loose. Should I let it come out naturely that way I would my own or should I take him to the vet?

All dogs need daily dental care. You should start asap. If a dog resists, you should begin by just practicing and running your finger across the dog's teeth. Then, progress to using some dog tooth paste. The next step, once the dog is used to that is to use a finger brush. It is a type of cleaning device that slips over your finger and allows you to brush your dog's teeth. He will already be used to the feeling, so he won't put up too much of a fight. If you can, work your way to using a regular dog tooth brush and never use human paste. Always use paste specifically for dogs. Dental care is vitally important. Once a year professional cleanings are a must. Without these steps, a dog will lose teeth, get infections and sometimes even worse.
