Cat with runny eyes? What does it mean when a cat has runny eyes? They look clear but i keep seeing build up on the sides. Is this a cold or something in the cats eyes?
What kind of cat is it? Gooky eyes is specific to some breeds. Persians in particular have to have help with keeping their eyes clean.
In most cats runny eyes are like runny noses in humans. So your cat probably has a cold. It's probably been sneezing too and you just didn't notice. Take it to the vet and have them check it over. They can recommend or get you the medicine - I can't remember what it's called but when mine had a cold it was a pink liquid that came with an eye dropper and she would have to get 6 drops, 2 drops 3 times a day for about a week.
I have a long hair cat, not a persian and does not usually have runny eyes. The cat has runny eyes and I am wondering if there is anything I can do for her. I have tried cleaning them with a damp cloth but it comes back. Is there any medicine I should get her or is there anything I can do to help. I would appreciate any help you can give. Thank you Joan
When a cat or dog has a very obvious health problem, owners must bring them to an experienced veterinarian. This could be a blocked tear duct or a yeast infection... or many other issues. Such a health issue cannot be resolved at home. You can try remedies, but they most likely will be temporary. If you can not afford a vet visit, ask for a reduced fee. Or ask for a recommendation to a low cost animal clinic. There are many. Please do not allow your pet to suffer.

Hi, I've had persians for about 24 years (2 different cats). My first cat was baby-doll faced (full long nose) with no eye problems. My second cat I now have is flat faced with watery eyes that will turn rusty if I do not keep them cleaned. It is not uncommon for persians to have runny eyes and yes they do turn a rusty brown if you don't clean them just about every night. The longer the nose, the less problems you'll. Since you already have this kitten & probably already attached, I recommend cleaning her eyes every night before bed time with a warm paper towel. I have to do this with my Fancy-girl. It's a lot like having a child that needs a bath every night before bed time. If done in a loving manner, it will help in the bonding between you and your cat. If you notice that the tears or mucus is becoming thick and yellowy (like a child with a snotty nose), there's a good chance it's an infection. If you see this, talk with your vet immediately. Don't let it get out of hand. I've been told from more than one vet that this is due to their short noses and large tear ducts. Ask you vet for some eye drops for this problem. He will probably give you an antibiotic drops for her. Keeping them clean is very important for these persians. Ask your vet about cleaning around her eye lids. Touching her eye ball with a finger tips might not be too good. I do it with Fancy, but I get my finger wet first before touching her eye. I would say that it is possible to cratch their eye ball it there is something in their to that is scratchy, like a hair. I'm not sure this would be the best. Ask your vet first. Persians are the most lovable cats in the universe, but they do require maitenence. Out-doors is not a good place for them to be either. There is so much gunk in the out-doors for a persians to get into that will give them health problems. Good luck!!!Lynn |
