My cat has developed a liking for fruit. She simply adores dried cranberries, raisins, dried apples and cherries, and other dried fruits. I would give them to her more often, but I don't know if it is healthy or not. Can anyone help me?

Comment #1 Heather (1) from Youngstown (Contact Member) -

I am not sure if it is ok, but I do know that my roomate's cat likes to eat pineapple, since it is not my cat I can't say what it can or can't eat. She always lets the cat eat the pineapple and she seems perfectly fine. She has been eating it for about a year. I would think the berries would be ok because if they find berries out in the wild they eat those if there is nothing else for them to eat. It is just a suggestion sorry I can't be of more help.

I would suggest growing some wheat grass. The cats will love it and if there is something nutrient wise they are missing that should take care of it.

Soak enough wheet berries to spread evenly across a 5" diameter pot full of dirt, in water over night.

Drain the water off and spread the seeds evenly on the dirt. Sprinkle with water twice a day. Make sure the water drains out.

In two days you should see them start to sprout. Put this where it can get some indirect sunlight, but the cats can't get to it.

After 7 to 10 days you'll have 4-6" high blades of grass and now put it where the cats can sit and chew on it.

You'll have some really happy cats.

Grapes are toxic for cats and dogs. Please check with aspca.org

They have an archive called people food in the animal poison control center.

My three year old cat LOVES fruit. She regularly eats cherries, grapes, peaches, bananas, strawberries, blueberries.

She has done this since she was a three month old kitten, and I

have seen no ill effects, except that Lexi is over weight, but

enjoying life!

My cat loves to eat bananas but are they helthy

Please do NOT feed your pets grapes or raisins! Your pet could go into renal failure very quickly (depending on their size). My cat, too, loves apples, plums, pears, tomatoes, and fruit juices. My vet says it's fine for him except grapes, raisins, and (for reasons she can't remember) raspberries.

Grapes are terribly toxic to cats...

my 4 month old kitten loves all fruit, even an orange, however, after reading an article from felinefutures.com i'm reconsidering. because cats don't have the enzymes necessary to digest fruit, it can lead to digestive probelms. also, some fruits make their urine alkaline & especially in male cats, you do not want this as it exacerbates FUS (feline urinary syndrome). it is cute & unusual behaviour but now i'm scared off. when she cries for my peach or plum, i'm just going to have to say NO!!

Raisins and grapes are very toxic. even a few grapes/raisins could harm a kitten/cat.

can dogs eat strawberries she loves them but are they o.k?

There are two foods that will make my cat go batty if she sees or smells them: tuna and cantaloupe. If she is sleeping upstairs and I go downstairs to secretly cut open a cantaloupe, she will awake in seconds and start whining until she is satisfied. I only let her have a few small thin slices because I don't know if it's bad for her, but I haven't noticed any harmful effects, unless I don't give into to her begging! She also gets excited about watermelon, pineapple and melon. She eats strawberries too, but won't beg for them. Cantaloupe is by far her favorite. Is this safe for her to eat? I already know about not feeding her grapes and raisins.

My cat just ate my strawberries! I made a search to see if I needed to take him to the vet urgently or not. I'm relieved to hear that other cats have survived the experience. My cats are in everything! One even goes for hot drinks like tea and coffee if you turn your back on her for a few minutes! I try to keep things out of their reach but it is rather difficult when you have just served yourself something and the bell or the telephone rings or something!

Cats are NOT allowed to eat raisins or grapes, but my kitty loves to eat avocados, melon cantaloupe, and that's all i can think of!

my catz always trying to get at our food. One time we werent home she knock our cornbread off the table and just devowored it. i hope its ok my yuongest wants to know what she can feed it. please help

Cats are naturally carnivores. Therefor in a state of nature cats will not eat fruits or vegetables. Cats do not have a digestive system capable of breaking plant matter down.

A small amount of fruits or veggies is not harmful at all, but significant amounts of it can cause health problems. Just remember if you are going to give your cat fruit to do it minimaly.

As mentioned above, grapes/raisins and raspberries are extremely bad to feed your cat. Just be careful what you give her.

My cat happens to really like peaches :D

I think most cats and dogs naturally know the things that they are not suppose to eat.Until a while ago i didnt know they couldnt have grapes and i tried to feed them to my dog and she just looked at me like i was an idiot. She would not eat them. I tried to feed my cat an apple and he growled at me for even attempting. So most of them naturally know.

I've done numerous web searches that all say you shouldn't feed grapes or raisins to cats, but my cat LOVES both of those things (more than tuna/meat and packaged treats), and she's still alive and healthy as can be. ????

I usually only give her about 3 raisins at a time and a couple of grapes at a time (which I must halve so she can lick the pulp from the skin, she won't just eat a chunk on a plate lol). So... is my cat some sort of mutant? :)

My cat loves mangos. He will fight me for slices. He seems more interested in licking the slices to death than actually eating them. I haven't seen anything saying this is bad other than rasins/grapes.

My cat loves cantaloupe. I see here that many of you think fruits are unhealthy for cats, but i was just wondering what do you think about cats that live in foreign countries and never eat "cat food" but only grass, raw meat and fruits and vegetables they find laying around. I grew up in Croatia ( Europe) and i remember having many cats that slept outside ate milk and whatever was left over from dinner, and I do not remember ever having to take them to a vet only for the rabies shot.

My cat just ate a raspberry and asked for more. I didn't know if it was safe, so I didn't give her anymore. Can someone please tell me WHY they can't eat raspberries? I'd really appreciate it.
