Comment #1 Claudia Holliman (69.150.130.183) -

What criteria need to be met in order to adopt or purchase a giraffe?

hi i just happened to stumble accross this and i dont think there are such things as mini's but then again im not sure. a average girraffe ive seen for sale on the web was 115, 000 in u.s i thinl

Interesting that giraffes can be bred as pets. Getting exotic pets for sale requires that you not only see its photo but get to the farm where it is/was being raised.

Mankind has been known to historically honor giraffes that normally tower 18 feet above the grasslands. Getting giraffe food from all leading pet stores should not be hard but one is always advised to make sure that they can feed on their own when young.

When they age, you realize their heights would make it hard to reach their mouths.

I think it is a silly idea to adopt a giraffe as a pet, i think that they deserve to be in the wild where they must be anyway. I hate the idea of setting up an artificial habitat for those poor animals and make them available for entertainment. That is rude. I am not a member of any animal right movement anyway.

But have empathy to those animals and let them live freely, like we humans do.

"I am not a member of any animal right movement anyway."

You may as well be.

"But have empathy to those animals and let them live freely, like we humans do."

But why should we not have the same empathy for dogs, fish, hamsters and cats?

I'd imagine to have a giraffe you'd need to have a large zoo-like enclosure for it, and a boat load of money to feed and care for it, plus a ton of insurance, and know of a veteranarian.

That is if there are even people out there who captive breed them for private citizens to own, and if there is any place where it is legal to have one. :P

Hi Mackarel, I think you are a little over reacting on this matter. Well maybe the original poster had a huge patch of land and that is why he is considering to buy this huge zoo animal. That is his problem anyway.

What is bothering me is that who the hell have a giraffe to sell?

Where can he buy a giraffe anyway? In a zoo? Hope the original poster post back.

Why would anyone want to buy a giraffe? Anyhow, I am sure that there are many a stipulation concerning the purchase of this particular animal. Not sure how easy one would go about doing so.

I think the original poster have a huge back yard, or probably a farm to be able to make him think of buying a giraffe. And it is a little strange to think of actually buying an animal like that.

But to tell you the truth, I think people should not make this animal put into cages. It is really saddening. How would those poor animals feel being caged. huhu.

Comment #9 Genie (63.176.159.210) - Fri Jan 1 22:39:02 2010

Hi guys.

I think the original poster should think twice before actually adopting a giraffe. I think it requires huge patch of grass land and it should be not that noisy, animals hate noises and would be alarmed with it.

I suggest that if you want to see some giraffes then just go to the zoo once in a while.

Comment #10 Terry (63.176.159.19) - Sat Jan 23 21:09:31 2010

I have to agree on that Genie, but I think the original poster is much aware of how huge this animal could be and already anticipated that he will be needing a huge patch of land where he can raise large animals like giraffes. But I think no matter how huge your land is, you are not allowed to keep such animals if you do not know how to take care of them.

Comment #11 Dencio (77.49.23.5) - Mon Feb 15 20:22:07 2010

So, a giraffe as a pet. That is a little strange for me. I think those animals which are really huge should be at zoos only. I can never imagine them being a household pet. That would be a little silly for you to consider. But anyway, if anyone wishes to do so and if that person have all the necessary stuffs to take care of the said animal, then I see no wrong about it.

"Correct info. not a guess"

The problem with the internet is everyone has an expert opinion. I will try to resolve this with correct information.

1. Ownership of a Giraffe requires a permit in most states.

2. A decent specimen will cost ~50, 000

3. A giraffe does not require a large holding pen, they can be sustained in a 10 acre pen. But, the larger the better.

4. They do require special fencing, housing and vegetatation. As well, they require special stocks for veterinary care.

5. They are heard animals and require other giraffes.

6. Annual maintenance is ~5, 000.

7. They survive well in captivity.

8. They can be aggressive and physically capable of killing a human.

9. As far as keeping them in captivity. I would rather be provided for in a safe, secure environment, than spend my life in fear of being eaten! Horses are wild animals and they domesticate nicely.
