I really want to buy/adopt a red fox kit and I am unwilling to change my mind where can I get one.

It sounds like you have your heart set on this. Have you thought about the fact that having a fox is illegal in most states? You will not be able to bring the fox to a vet for checkups, as they only handle domesticated animals. A fox is a wild animal, he will not listen to commands, go for walks, sleep where you want him to, etc. He will not want to be confined inside a home or in a fenced yard. Instinct will tell him to run away back to the wild.

Hello Jackie where exactly did you get your information? First off foxes are smarter than dogs more agressive and are harder to care for. This is assuming you can even find one. Many local vets will look at your fox. (You may have to mussle it for safety reasons) Foxes will sleep where ever they can get to eat a variety of food that makes them easier to care for and the best thing about them you can use most things for a dog for the fox. Including collars flea meds treats and things of that nature. Call your local petco and ask for the vet area and ask if they would look at it. Where we live there is a Apple Tree local personal owned vet that will look at freakin' bears and also i have asked they will look at a fox. I'm not sure about them being illegal in most states which they very well could be, so before considering anything you would be better off doing much much reseearch.

Not going into alot of detail you can take them for walks it just depends on it's personality. You can't take some dogs for walks either there to aggressive and if your fox get's loose in your area you dont have to worry much about it attacking someone or anything unless it's cornered. You also need to teach it to stay in a yard and you can't train it with the electric flags that you can with a dog. Maybe a tall privacy fence or such. You need to give them plenty of room the more closed in they are and the less you spend around them the more aggressive they are going to get. Same thing with dogs just it takes alot more care for them. I know a few people that have had pet foxes and they even lived with other dogs. Which usually is a big No No. It's just what they grow up in. You hear a few things (maybe more) every year about dangerous dog attacks or "Buck mauls innocent old lady" but in no case have i ever heard of a visicious fox attack. Anything can get used to a home or being caged in but some will take it differently than others. You might get lucky and get one that's perfectly cool with you being around and staying home. Go on Youtube there are some good examples of a "tame" foxes. I'm not a expert on it but my friend said it's more like adopting a friend. There are even care books on keeping pet foxes. There is even a Foxes for Dummies book i saw it on Ebay.

Jordan:

Your being way to hard on the fox in general. I do not disagree with your premise, but lighten up man. Fox are not dogs; correct, Fox are by nature not an aggressive animal. A bad ass cat can take a wild fox and in most cases the fox will not even fight. in the wild they are not even near the top of the food chain. they sneak around and are known for being sly because that is what they have to do the survive. I have bare handed taken live injured fox out of leg hold traps by hand on more times than I care to remember, and have never been bitten, and those are wild fox. Don't try that with a house cat!! Again I agree with most of what you have to say be hay I love fox and they are great pets, and they do require allot of attention, and are not dogs.

i live in texas, and have done my research on the fox, cause man do i want one too. i know that they are illegal to have as a pet in TX. but i do not know about any other states. however, i do know a bit about pet adoption too. though im not too sure of it i could safely say that having a tiger as a pet in texas is probably illegal too but have a few good friends that raised them till age two through some adoption program for a zoo or something. so im pretty sure there are loop holds to owning "holding/adopting" a baby fox.

now the fox it self. jackie, im sure your a wonderful person and i am not trying to be rude but please! the most violent thing about a fox is its teeth. they are sharp! but since a catfish has more jaw power than the fox does, the most dangerous thing you could find in a fox is tripping over it!

foxes are really smart and can be trained. and because of their light weight frame are very dosile and skidish.

have you ever seen the "dog whisperer" on cable? now im not going to hang my hat on everything he says but have not seen him be wrong yet. and he also hins at what i have studied and that is that moch like dogs, it is not impossible to train any animal as long as its done the right way.

i will do more research, please feel free to email me anytime with questions. wt_tim45@hotmail.com with subject "foxes"

joey and alen, this is a really substancial substitute for a "regular" fox. look up "Fennec Fox" it is a very cute and fun animal. there are people in texas that raise them for sale.

try this link

go to critterhouse.com

another word about this fennec fox, it is an exotic originally from Egypt therefor there is no permit or license needed to have on as a pet in the states. i know the lady in fairfield tx. is selling them for $1000, these foxes are much more fragile than the red and gray foxes we know of here in east texas.

"Exotic animals"

Please be advised to anyone looking to adopt a tame, exotic animal.

They are NOT domesticated, like the dogs you see on The Dog Whisperer. You can not train them like you do a domesticated animal. The best you can do is research their habits and organize your life around THEIR behavior. If you try to train these animals and expect it to obey like a dog you will be injured or injure the animal. At best you will spend your time with these companions being very disappointed. If you don't already understand this, then you are not ready to own one of these animals.

I understand fox's are not like a dog and are a exotic pet that need special care, housing, and diet. im fine just watching them, but if i can interact with them that would be nice. i think im ready to a big comitment. email me at hco311@gmail.com
