it would be so crule to have a kangaroo as a pet, expecially in nyc and being responcible for it being hit by a bus and killing another children. i'm not sure if your serious or not but your a horrible human being.

let the wild life be wild. keeping a wild pet as your own and locked up inside your house or backyard is wrong. they need to be in their own limits with their own kind. people don't live in the wild with other animals so why should a wild animal do the same just because we believe their cute?

GET REAL PEOPLE!!!!

NEVER EVER PUT WILD ANIMALS IN CAGES NEVER I MEAN NEVER THAT'LL JUST BE SO CRUEL PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just thought I would drop a line in here for the nimrods who seem to like to run off at the mouth without knowledge in any form whatsoever. Kangaroos make great pets. Always have, always will. They are more acceptable to a new environment than a dog or a cat. They can be trained in exactly the same way you would with any other animal that you call a pet. All they need is space and affection. Raised with love and care, and these blokes will sit on the couch and watch TV with you. They can be formiddable gaurd animals and are very loyal.

Anyone who sprouts the sort of snot that says, its cruel and you have to own a zoo, or anything else that undeucated people here seem to dribble, needs to actually do some homework. It's dissapointing to see that some people know so little about Australia and its marsupials or monotremes, but like to see their crap sprawled all over a message board. Before anyone decides to purchase a pet, exotic or not, they need to do homework. I was pleased to see that we do have people on this board with common sense. Kangaroos are about the most adaptable animal in Australia, and can survive damn near anything. If you want a pet, then this would be one that a lot of people would reccomend.

My knowledge comes from living in the outback of Australia for most of my life, and now residing here in the US. Before I open my mouth, and try and make myself look good by calling others idiots. I do my homework lol.

The Aussie.

I think it would be great to have a kangaroo as a pet. I think everyone should get an exotic pet as a way of better understanding the world and its problems. I am an animal lover and I have owned exotic pet I once kept my fully grown Bengal Tiger, Roary, chained to my dishwasher in my one bedroom apartment for over 2 1/2 years. Roary and I had a great friendship and we even would reinact famous battles from the Civil War every Thursday afternoon, although this was tough considering he was so drugged up and chained to the dishwasher. But I firmly believe with a steady diet of tranquilizers and constant beatings, any animal can be trained to love the enviornment they have been blessed to have. PETA #1!!!

Good luck with your kangaroo.

KANGAROOS CAN SUCK IT! Wallabee! Wallabee!

In response to Comment #25: (And other comments)

How could you say that someone is a horrible Human Being, saying that only proves to anyone that you are incapable of understanding what was said in that comment. - 1. The incident was out of his control. 2. You clearly didn't read over that carefully, if you read it, it clearly states that it was a bus driver from Nebraska, not New York City.

It's just not right to call anyone a horrible Human Being, even the wife of John Lennon, Yoko Ono, forgave the killer of John Lennon. - No atrocity is worth calling someone a horrible Human Being, Mike clearly loved his Kangaroo and for you to blast him for that is quite simply atrocious.

Also, (For most other comments) - You shouldn't go about saying things you clearly don't know. and You shouldn't say something is cruel if you can't even spell it. -Nevertheless, owning a Kangaroo In my opinion is a wonderful idea, with an enormous responsibility however.

Comment #31 Big Red (kangaroo) from USA -

Hi to all. Does anyone else have exotics as pets?

OMG some of you are stupid. Are any of you actually Australian and know anything about roos? I have 2 roos that live in my yard and many more that regularly visit it. I hand raised both as the mother in both cases, was killed in a road accident.

There are risks involved in all pets, but I've never been bitten, punched or kicked. Sure they are 'wild' animals, but use some common sense. Don't approach wild kangaroos, but hand raised are fine. Many of our zoos in cities have walk in kangaroo exhibits where you can pet them. So much for being 'dangerous'. Moron.

Comment #33 Jessica Todman (124.179.210.200) -

is australia, you need to have property and a permit to keep kangaroos.

the only way you will get one is from a rescue or someone who has rescued one.

if you do get a kangaroo, they learn to feed and drink from things just given to them.

They will have no sence of threats like foxes and other animals, so they will not be able to be released back into the wild after you have raised it. unless you just kept it while it was injured and then release it soon after.

we have 5 kangaroos at the moment.

you need to take good care of these animals and they require alot of work expecially when they are babies, they need to be fed every few hours, even through the night.

Comment #34 Jessica Todman (124.179.210.200) -

as in responce to 28#

NO ANIMAL SHOULD BE BEATEN AT ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

I have studies macropods for over 15 years. I have wallabies, and kangaroo's I have placed over 155 in the last 15 years. The wallabies are a smaller version of the Kangaroo and they are a bit easier to handle. They can still be dangerous. The Red Kangaroo's grow to be 200 pounds and over 7 feet tall. They can kill you. They do not make good Back Yard Pets. I have seen men that have been attacked by them, cheeks detached from there faces and disembowled. We have a roo that has a spinal deformation at settlers pond and he will stay with us because of his medival problems but he too can be dangerous. We have 10 foot fencing and acres for them to bounce on. We have had a few exceptions few and far between. I have also bottled babies and you give them your life, sleep, ect. We have incubators and once one goes in I am dedicated to them night and day until they become stable then we strap on the heated pouches and they go with us on rounds. They are an amazing animal but please research anything that you are planning on doing and don't make any rash decisions. Speak to you local vet and find out if he or she can work on them if not find one! And please if you have any questions contact us and we can try to help. Baby Kangaroos do not drink cow milk! They drink a mixture of Esbilac, Pedialyte, Poly vi sol and a probiotic. They have nipples on there bottles that are about 2.5 inches long. We give them Critical Care when they are going thru the gut changes, which take about 30 days. We rub them down with wheat germ oil to keep them moist and from dehydrating, You can find anything you want on line and all that we hope is that you research what you want to do and remember you have 9 months to prepare for your own newborns arrival wnd you wouldn't bring it home without a crib, well give this animal the same thought and know what you are doing before you bring it home and have everything it needs to make its arrival smooth. All I can say in closing is they do not make good pets and please don't make any rash decisions think about it, the animals future is in your hands!

In responce to comment 12; What ever goes on in your "love affair" between your kangaroo friend and you may be a hang-up for you or for the both of you. But there are some things that are best left in the closet and have no place on the internet. There are youths who view the internet who's minds can still be manipulated by such things. I guess I'll wish you two a happy relationship but please do not flaunt it in public.

Comment #40 An owner of rent property (75.89.102.68) -

I too have a responce to 28#. Travis Henderson, your head is full of crap. It certainly is not full of brain. If you've ever rented an apartment you would know that you won't keep any kind of animal there for long before your landlord found out about it. Maintinance personel who work for apartment complexes have the landlords authorization to enter any unit while the tenants are away to spray for bugs, check the carpet for damage, etc and it is legal. There are also the click of "apartment rats" who go around tattling to the landlord on each other. You won't keep a house cat very long without the landlord's knolage of it,

much less a bengal tiger. And although some landlords will let you keep a dog or cat(You put up an extra rent deposit for that)

no landlord in his right mind will allow his property to be destroyed by allowing a tenant keep a tiger there. Come-on, Travis! Come off of it! Wake up to the real world!...Idiot!

In responce to comment #37. Krista, I don't know where you can

adopt a kangaroo for free. But there is a wild animal auction in

Macon, Missouri, Lolli Brothers Auction. Just about any kind of

animal you can think of goes through there and you may be able

to bid on a kangaroo considerably cheaper than picking one up

from a broker or a breeder. I suggest however that you do some

research on how to take care of a kangaroo and their behavior

traits. Also check with your state laws and local zoning codes

to be sure you can keep a kangaroo where you live. Know what

you are getting into before you decide to get one. About an hour

ago I left a reply on another website for a parent who's son

has a pet cougar that tries to kill him every day and the parent

does not know what to do. In short I told the son's parent

attitudes among wild animals are like snagging a "grab-bag".

Some are friendly, Some are not. You accept what you get.

I know this from my own expeirance with keeping wild animals.

I once had a cougar. She was the most loving pet I've ever had

during my lifetime. A great pyrenees dog I once had was the only

other pet that was as loving. I also had a serval. He was not

friendly. Although some wild animals are friendly, none of them

come with a "friendly-gaurentee". It helps more to get them

when they are young. And never spank a wild animal like some

people do dogs. They interpret that as an act of aggression

rather than disipline. To strike a wild animal will just about

assure a mean disposition in that animal for the rest of his/her

life.

Lolli Bros. can be reached @ 660-385-2516.

Krista, I wish you luck. Harry

"KANGAROOS CAN SUCK IT! Wallabee! Wallabee!"

You're a moron if you think there is a clear distinction between kangaroos and wallabies. They are the thing (more or less). And besides, the wallbies most kapt as pets are Bennett's or Red-necked wallabies, which are in the same genus as the great kangaroos (red, grey, euros, etc).

If you want something close to both a wallaby, but in fact is a great kangaroo, try an eastern wallaro, which is the only commonly available great 'roo. Do tons of research, kangaroos (expt small species, such as dama and Bennett's) are somewhat difficult.

If you would like, i could give you information on kangaroos in captivity. I'm a mammologist.

Although you can keep them as pets, kangaroos are, and will always be, wild animals!

Quote 'Comment #9 aaron (58.165.25.174) -

you cant even have them as pets in australia as they are native, and your not allowed to export them aswel due to the fact that they are native. but considering that there are some 17 millian of them in aus, if you get a property big enough your more than likly to have them on it. although they are a shy animal.'

G'day all

Sorry aaron Im afraid you're wrong,

you can keep kangaroos as pets in victoria and other states except queensland. but only with the right liscesing. even here its hard to get a hold of a kangaroo. it also depends on what sub-species you are looking for example, red kangaroos are harder to get a hold of than their grey counterparts.

in all seriousness i've seen more marsupials for sale in America than i hav seen in Australia

get one thing right.

There is only one difference between roos and wallabies!!!!!

SIZE

if you are seriously considering getting ya hands on a marsupial make sure you have enough room (eg. the size of 3 houses) give them the right food and give them love and attention. I have had previous encounters with many marsupials in australia.

if you really wanted to get close to these great animals go to your local zoo and volunteer

Comment #49 tim (74.42.100.124) - Fri Aug 28 11:16:40 2009

actually because of the exotic animal trade act that went into effect a few years ago, it is perfectly legal to own kangaroos, bears, tigers, lions, wolves, and all other animals that fit under the name of exotic animals, However there are extremely specific guidelines put forth which you must follow before even beginning to think about owning an exotic animal. And depending on the region that you live in the guidelines change, but as long as the animal was aquired legally, it is perfectly fine to own them as long as you are within the safety guidelines. For example, in minnesota and iowa it is perfectly legal to own a lion, mountain lion, or even a pack of wolves as long as they are kept in a fenced in area with a ten foot fence, and then 15 feet out from that fence there must be a retaining fence set in place for the safety of others as well, but as long as this is set in place it's perfectly legal to own any exotic pet that falls within the writ of the exotic animal trade act.
