We have a stray dog that comes around a lot. I don't want a dog, but I have heard if you take him to a shelter if they can't find a home for him, after a few days they put him down. Is this true?

Have you tried advertising that you found a dog to see if anyone comes and claims it? Put out flyers, place an ad in your local paper or penny saver. You can take the dog to a no kill shelter. I would make sure it is a no kill before I just drop it off somewhere. Why don't you want a dog? Sometimes I find that those kind of dogs are the best. For some reason dogs have this sense of they have found a good home and become the most well behaved, loyal dogs. How does the rest of your family feel about it? If you really don't the dog try advertising and if nothing comes up try a no kill shelter so it can be adopted out. Good Luck

I live in a rural area and i do get dogs and cats that get dropped off or break loose. I make sure not to feed them and just leave them be till they move on. Whatever you do dont feed them if you want them to move on. The minute they get some food they want to stay and then will want to come into the house.

I have had random pets show up at my house too. It is pain because they do tend to stay if you feed them. I hate to just abandon them so what I don't adopt I usually end up taking to the local animal rescue or calling Animal Control.

It depends on how crowded your shelter is. I would call a pet rescue and they will find a home for it instead of taking a chance and having it put down.

Stray Shepherd found in Franklin Park, PA. Outside of Pittsburgh. Free to a good home, we will screen interested takers, be prepared. He is a male, VERY sweet and good tempered. He is older (5-7 years) maybe older, but will need updated shots, etc.

Please email or call @ 412-298-9163, ask for Gregg. Thank you.

I have 3 male cats they are about 9 months old two are black and white and one is a gray and brown tiggered cat. My family and I are trying to get rid of them. So please reply if you would like to have one. We would personally bring them to you. They are trained trained. They don't have shots and are not fixed. Please make a home for them. Good with children.

Please know that 99% of shelters will indeed kill their animals, sometimes within only 3 days! They do not advertise this, of course. However just about every shelter is a Kill Shelter. The best option would be to find a Rescue that would be willing to take the dog in. Please do make sure that the rescue has a "No Kill" mission statement. Almost all rescues are very different than shelter. The rescue workers would do ANYTHING humanly possible to save the life of a dog, cat or whichever animal that they focus on. Most rescues have volunteers that take the animals in until a loving home can be found.

If you can at ALL afford to do so, please take the dog in and bring him to a vet. He must be checked for heartworms. A stray most likely has them, and it is an awful way for a dog to die! The worms will eat him from the inside out. Please help this dog if you can.

God Bless.

Hi, it is sad how many stray dogs (and cats) there are. Did you know that for each person in the world, there are 10, 000 animals without homes? I would place a personal "lost" ad, most newspapers will let you do that for free. If there is any way you can keep the dog, please do. If not, do not bring the dog to a shelter, most shelters will kill the dog within a few days (a week at the most). A dog rescue will be able to help. Good luck!

There are both kill and non-kill shelters. They do not "advertise" which type that they are. Even if a worker is directly asked, they may be told to not talk about the policy of the shelter. However, a non-kill shelter WILL talk about it, as they do have a lot to be proud of. Taking care of neglected pets, indefinitely, until they are found a good home, is very admirable. It may be best to go into local shelters and ask them what their policies are. Alternatively, rescue groups will risk life and limb to save animals. If you know what type of dog breed that dog is, it would be best to bring him to a rescue that deals with that specific dog breed. If he seems to be a mixed dog, you can search for general local dog rescues. I have a lot of respect for those who work in canine rescue, they do amazing things and always make sure that a dog is safe.
