I think adopting your pet from a shelter or a rescue organization is the way to go! I've gotten numerous cats and kittens this way, and my sister has gotten a lovely german shepherd who is the sweetest thing ever!

Anyone else rescue their pet from a shelter?

I got 2 cats that way. One was very sweey. The a bit stand-offish.

As I'd mentioned on another post, my friend gets multiple dogs from Pet Rescue and they all have been traumatized in some way. I had thought you could only get abused pets, but am glad to see that they have well cared for animals as well.

Some pet rescue shelters take animals that are mean, but others won't. Also some shelters keep the animals for like a week before offering to adopt them out to make sure that their temperment is good. And sometimes they only offer certain dogs and cats to adults with no kids living with them, if they startle easy or get aggressive with children.

What do shelters do with the unwanted dogs and cats? Do they put them to sleep or do they just stay at the shelters all their lifes?

It depends on if it is a no kill shelter or not. It is sad though if they do need to be put to sleep for no other reason than their time is up at the shelter they are at. My husband and I will definitely get a shelter dog. I am going to wait until my kids are a little older so they can go and pick the dog out and make sure they interact well with the dog. I have heard that shelter dogs do make the best pets. They somehow realize that they have been saved and will be given a good home and they show their appreciation by being the best dog you have ever had.

Aww how sad. Ive been to a few shelters and its kind of a bleak atmosphere. They live in cages. What stopped me from adopting one was the amount of personal information they ask for and the calls they have to make to people i know. I am a very private person and i hated giving out personal information on my friends and family so they could call them up and ask them dumb questions about me lol.

I've gotten all of my cats from no-kill shelters. I tried to get a cat from the Humane Society, but couldn't because I couldn't show in my lease where it was specifically allowed. Sad where the HS would prefer to maybe destroy an animal. And, interesting enough, PETA, with all its grandstanding, destroys a LOT of animals.

Around here we have an organization called PAWS that helps fundraise and support no-kill shelters. I think it's a great organization and I donate every year. Humane Society around here also doesn't kill unwanted animals because PAWS contributes to them and that's a condition. I also know that if you have to take an animal in you can make a donation toward carig for the animals in the shelter so that they have the food and supplies so they don't have to get rid of animals. All the shelters here also have vets working with them so all the animals get spayed or neutered too. That way they don't create more unwanted or uncared for animals.

The shelters I've adopted from have either spayed my girls first or arrangement have been made with the vet so I can bring her back and it's done at no extra charge to me. It's all included in the adoption fee.

I have gotten most of my pets through adoption. We currently have 1 fish, 1 snail, 5 dwarf hamsters 3 are Dalmation, 2 Russian Tortoises, and 1 Spaniel/Dach mix.

I have a cat up for adoption and anyone in the west side of washington. She needs a home bad i had to go to college so shes in a boarding house for cats. The shelter said they were going to kill her if we brought her. i have a pit boxer mix shes 1 yr old...shes been my baby since birth but things have gotten rough for me and my fiance and now she is outside...she is an inside dog and we are neglecting her but not meaning to and we cannot afford to take care of her anymore.she needs to be saved soon..please get back with me and let me know something. Okayy i Have a Cat That I Have recently Taken Of the Streets Due to Being Beat Up By Neighborhood cats And When She Was Found she Had A Hole in Her Side It Is Now Healed and I Have Sevrel Cats and Due to her Exspericence she is frightend and does not like cats. she likes dogs quite well. but i need her to go to a lovingg home.

I have a cockapoo his name is Chesney sweet as can be but unfortunetly we have to give him up i recently moved in with my parents & it is very hard to have him there i also have a 9 month baby & it has just become too hard on my parents to support us all please help
