I am thinking about getting a lizard or iguana for my classroom. I need it to be fairly cheap and low maintenance since it is out of pocket and will be a project with my 4th graders. Any suggestions to get me started?

Iguanas seem like they become VERY high maintenance. I would look toward a different pet.

I agree that iguannas are pretty high maintenance. Especially due to the fact they they can reach lengths of 5-6 feet including the tail at which point a tank is not appropriate.

If you are insistent on a lizard for a pet however, you may want to consider a Leopard Lizard, reaching only 12 inches or so, come in a variety of vibrant colors, are extremely docile and low maintenance.

Alternatively, you may also consider the green anole lizard reaching on 4-6 inches or so. A little flighty (may not be to partial to much handling) but not because they are agressive, on the contrary they are extremely docile, low maintenance and with time many can become quite friendly. Good luck!!

I have an iguana named mika that I have since she was a hatchling. They are not really the best pet for a classroom. Right now I just paid over $200 for a custom cage. She is well over 3 feet from snout to tail. I wouldn't give her up for the world but I would pick something a little more kid friendly for a classroom. Once full grown an iguana a whip from an iguana's tail packs a sting.

Leopard geckos will make decent pets but remember that if the kids are too rough with the tails they can break off. They will regrow but it will not be like the original.

You could always get a green anole. They are fairly cheap and don't require nearly as much as an iguana. Plus they don't grow large either.

do not get a tokay gecko, unless you dont mind being bitten everytime you pick it up, i dont believe they can be trained and are very aggresive, but they are pretty.

"Class pets..."

Oh I remember when I was in third grade... our teacher who was an animal lover had a class pet lizard. The name is on the tip of my toungue but I just can't remember it, but I know their characteristics. They're the ones that run abundantly around Florida and were about 4 inches long and bush green? I don't think it was a geco, because they live in Austrailia... but our lizard's name was Liz and he made a great class pet. All they need are some crickets to eat and a wet sponge full of water(I think for the crickets to drink). We loved watching him catch the crickets and scuttle around his tank. They live for about three years in captivity, and when we had him it was the third and final year of his life. After spring break, we discovered he had passed away. My teacher had gone to Florida and left someone to take care of him, and the caretaker found out he had died of old age. Oh, how I miss Liz(his name). But, when I visted my teacher the next year, I found out that she had gone to Florida and cought one for they are so abundant. This time it was a female, named Liz also. But they really do make great class pets. I remember when I visited Florida after the year we had Liz(forgive me for my ignorance, I was only a 3rd grader going on fourth!) I would see a lizard and gasp, "It's Liz's friend!". So, if you want a low maitence, kid-friendly, interesting pet for your classroom, get a lizard! (but you might have to have a bit of money in your pocket, he needed a huge back of crickets every week and he ate the lot!)
