I have a horse in my barn and i was wondering what a horse might eat.

Don't you think you should have found the answer to that BEFORE you got a horse in your barn? Or was it just a big surprise? One morning you awoke to find a horse in your barn?

They need hay, stray and bales of it. Lots of water too. you can get some fancy feed pellets for them, but I had friends growing up who had three horses and all they ever fed them were hay and water. Pretty simple.

I guess I am wondering the same thing. How in the world would you not know you have a horse in your barn? If it's not yours, I would seriously try to find who owns it and let them feed it.

k well i take care of race horses and they should have hay either flake or a fhay bag also plenty of CLEAN water and when it comes to feed sweet feed or oats, cracked corn works but dont give them to much if there not being worked its like us eating all the time but sitting a on couch so if u can put them in a pasture to run around but if u only have the barn then take them out and let them graze a little they actaully need to graze on grass bc the motion of it helps produce an enzyme that help there digestion. It also helps if they are riden simply bc they do like to be taken out just like anyother animal

Horses need hay, and they don't NEED to be fed three times a day. Horses can be fed once a day, as long as you make sure they're fed enough. But, it would be better to be fed hay at least twice a day. If it is living in a stall, the stall needs to be cleaned every day, and the horse should be turned out for at least a couple hours each day, in paddock, or pasture with good fences, and you need to make sure that the horse ALWAYS has fresh water. ALWAYS. If you aren't riding this horse regularly, you shouldn't be feeding it grain or any extra feeds, as it will cause it to become overweight.

horses should eat hay in the winter time or you could feed it to em when they aint got no grass to eat. and you should feed em horse pallets so he/she are controll able. if you plane to rodeo or do stuff like that then you feed em sweet feed so he/she will be pumped up. i've been raised around horses all my life and i rodeo, so i should know what to do. oh yeah dont feed em to much or he/she will die unless you walk em around for a while.

my horses lost weight while they went from their 20 year home to another few places before i got a place for them with me. i normally fed them 4 chips of hay between 3 horses, twice a day. a couple of weeks i had to feed them once a day but i doubled up on everything. they had carrots and apples intermitantly and grain about 75% of the time. when i brought them home finally, they were way under weight. someone called in to the spca and i had a visit from them. what could be the cause? they were wormed twice in as many months, i powdered their manes twice in as many months for lice and now i'm being accused of neglect for not feeding them enough. the hay came from the same farmer i used for years. they are 18, 22, and 24. can you give me any advice?

Lisa

The most natural food for horses is good quality pasture. Most mature pleasure horses doing light work will do well on pasture alone if they have sufficient grazing. However, horses are selective grazers and need a large area to meet their nutritional needs. Just because a field is green does not mean it contains sufficient grazing for a horse, and depending on where you live, for a large part of the year pasture is not available.

You can optimize the amount of grazing available by dividing your pasture into sections and rotating your horses through the different paddocks. That way, you give the grass a chance to grow back and can pick up the manure.

"Basic food of horse"

* Carrots and apples, especially apples

* Cod liver oil, rich in vitamins, mix it with food

* Molasses, mix it with dry food or medicines

* Corn oil, a rich source of energy

* Salt lick, one designed for horses, not cattle

* Beet pulp, rich in energy and protein, soak before feeding
