Horse knee and ankle question

Hi,

I resently got an emial about a couple of free TB racing fillies. One of them had a 'small chip in the knee', and the other had a 'flake in the ankle'. What does this mean? Is it perminent? How long does it take to heal? Thanks.

Comment #1 sammehpants from Canada -

I actually couldn't tell you what those terms mean, I have never heard of them, but I have to tell you, if the horses are free, the owners either don't believe that they will be 100% sound, even after they heal, or they don't think the horse is worth the vet bills.

If you have a vet, or can find a horse vets number, you can call them, and ask them what would be needed to fix these problems, they could probably tell you the approx cost that it will cost to have the problems fixed. My experience with free horses is that it's not worth it.

Now, if you don't plan on racing these horses, that's a different story, and it would be ok to take them, if you are willing to put in the money and the time to fix their problems.

But, I still say that the best course of action would be to ask a vet's opinion.

I have a 17 yo gldg that was on the track for quite sometime (turned barrel horse) and the lady that I bought him from told me that his ankles were fused. I have noticed him having some trouble getting around the barrels. Is there anything that can be done to make him more comfortable. Could you explain what this means. Tk You

I have a mare that left the track two years ago with a slab fracture. She is back in training and her left ankle is almost fused. Always a lil ouchy but she is done running. Riden most every day and can return to the track if she has to.
