I'm wondering how you are suppose to create a pile of manure. I know people have told me you have to turn the pile or something? We do a lot of organic gardening and I'm thinking I'd like to get a horse too, as the manure would be beneficial.

Anyone know where you should start the pile - should it be a certain distance from the home? How frequently you turn the pile, etc?

I wish i could help since we have tons of horse farms around us. My mom growing up had a pile she started. It was a couple feet from the house and out of Oder range. She would dump stray food or biodegradable stuff on it. I dont ever remember her turning it though.

You have to tuen the piles or the decomposition process generates heat that can build up. That can be dangerous during the summer and I have actually heard of compost piles catching fire. Also turning them mixes up the material and makes it all decompose at equal rates and makes a much better compost. Otherwise the stuff at the bottom all becomes almosrt liquid while the stuff at the top doesn't compost at all.

I have seen containers that are made for piles like that and ar pretty much smell proof and you do not have to flip the pile.
