Thank author of this post/commentI have a friend who has a horse and is looking for another one. She said horses need companionship. Is that true?

Thank author of this post/commentNot always. Some horses get very jealous of other horses and do not include them in races or games they play. They can even kick them or hurt them serverely. I suggest taking your horse to a friends for a couple of hours and see how they get along first.

hi i want to get a horse but i cant take on two right now so i was wondering would it be ok living on its own if i gave a lot of love and care?

Thank author of this post/commenti'm not exactly an EXPERT but my mum has two horses and they're fine together. i guess it might be a good idea to get a new horse on loan for a while and introduce them to eachother slowly. then if they're good together you can think about buying it. of course, the horse has to be for sale first!

Horses are herd animals and like to be with other horses. If you cannot get another horse, goats are another good choice. They just like to be in a herd of some sort. They need a companion. If they dont get along at first, they usually sort it out on their own.

Im not sure, but i have heard pigmy goats are great around horses. Our horse had a nother horse as his companion but we ended up selling him and since then our horse has been showing his personality more because before he was the under horse and was bulied by the second horse

Thank author of this post/commentok goats r a good idea helps a horse relax but more than one horses or just one is fine just as long as u give them attention plus maybe a goat to but i would be more worried about not having the space for two horses rather than if ur horses is lonely

Thank author of this post/commentI work at an animal sanctuary that specilises in horses and trust me dont put a goat in with a horse, if u like ur horses main and tail its a really bad idea there little sods for chwing on them, plus whn the horse decides that it dont like the goat chewing on its tail any more its a very messy and bloody busynes clening it up, if u want to put anything in with them get a stirdy sheep like a herdwick, somthing that can withstand a good kicking!!!!

Do horses need company?

I have a dominate mare and she has been on her own for a couple months now. She seems fine and I give her lots of exercise and attention. Is that good enough? I've heard if a horse is alone too much then they go depressed. Is that true?

Thank author of this post/commentGracie is my name. I'm a just 3 year old Fox Trotter. My owner moved me to her property 3 days ago because I was herd bound and also to have better pasture. I am very gentle and did bond well with my owner over many trail rides durring summer/fall. Currently grass is under 2 feet of snow. I eat my hay only when she grooms me; otherwise all I do is walk the fence line, calling for other horses, however, non are in the area. Will I adjust or do I need a companion? If so, what? All this walking in deep snow does give me lots of exercise, which should give me an appetite. Help, so my owner will have some peace of mind and I can get some rest.

Thank author of this post/commentI grew up on a farm we owned around 20 horses over 10 years, we had 1 male who didnt like other horses but tollerated them, when she had the chance she preferred to be far from them. others couldnt live without another horse while other might not care it all depends on your horse. introduce yours to another see if it gets excited, doesnt care, or hates the other horse, if its real excited about seeing another horse I'd suggest getting another horse because it misses others.

I dont think horses can stay home alone if they are trained because then they are use to ur love and ur care so at else are they suppose to do when there is no one around to love them

Hi there i am geting a jorse at christmas, but i only have the room and money for one and have now been told that horses can not live alone. there is cow and sheep in the field not to far from me and i have 3 dogs do you think this would help her

i might get a horse this summer and i have enough room for two but not the money for two. I have a job over the summer so food isn't the problem. It is the price of the second horse. Does a horse need a companion or will a goat or a sheep work.

would a dutch warm blood horse be a good first horse? I am almost 14 and I have been working with horses for about 2 1/2 years. would it work out?

i think you should not kep horses completely on there own they should at least be able to see other horses there are herd animals my two horses cant bare to be apart!

I am a 3yr horse owner and have been through quite a few scenarios. For a while I kept my horse in the front field since the cattle was in a different one. I noticed she wasn't as social as she used to and tended to be more grouchy. Then one of our good friends suggested he take her to help take care of her since I would be going back to school and my grandmother was having a hard time carrying her water and such. Now she is right back to normal and her performance is incredible.

Horses are herd animals they couldn't survive on their own in the wild. They depend on each other to keep them safe. Horses don't worry about getting hurt they worry about being killed so therefore if they are alone they are going to be more nervous and stressed out because they are lacking that companionship and security from another horse.
