Gold fish pond question

Odie from the dog house -

We are putting a pond in our backyard and I would like to put some large goldfish in it. We live where the temperatures can get below zero. Do I have to bring the fish in every winter or will they go dormant like other types of fresh water fish. Do I need to put slow release food in the pond so they don't go hungry over the winter?

Comment #1 Jeff from IL -

ur pond need to below the freeze line for the ground ik in the midwest its 3 feet. After three feet the water will stay around 50 bc the ground is actually keeping it warm bc its so fardown this is where ur fish will hibarnate over the winter without food and filtration simply keep the top of the pond unfroozen

our pond lost half its water last night. this happened the same time last year. there are no leaks in the liner can it have to do with the filter, the pond was fine all summer and fall but last night it went below freezing for the first time could this have something to do with it.??? there is not water around the pond and it happened last year at the same time. and we just emptied, because all the fish died. this year we caught it before it emptied totally so we want to try to keep it. any suggestions or comments.
