ferrets are strictly carnivores (eats meat) much like cats, but ur best option would be to go to a pet store and get some comercial ferret food, this will give it everything it needs, making ur own diet is very difficult as u got to get all the nutritional requirments spot on or theyl and up getting to fat or really skinny (trust me been there done that and got the T-shirt)

There are many ferret foods on the market. The food should have Taurine and have no less than 20% Fat and no less than 34% Animal Protein. At least 3 of the first 5 ingredients should be meat protein. The food should be available at all times with plenty of water to drink.

Just another note~ You don't want to feed them food that contains fish, it makes them stinky and their poop too.

I agree with this all as well, here is a link that to a google search with lots of options for reading about the different diets available. I feed my ferret raw meat. I feed raw chicken chunks, chicken livers, and chicken wings. The bones are good for their teeth, and if raw they can be eaten. Never feed an animal cooked bones, that is when it becomes brittle and may rupture his throat or something. I am also in the process of finding more raw meats in my area to feed. There is another thread on here that I commented about that will explain lots of different options for raw meats. You may also feed cooked unseasoned meats. I wouldn't feed that regularly. Anything high protein, high fat is good for them. There are so many different options out there, do your research first or you may end up with a whole bag of something 'just ok' and then find the jackpot of food! Thats me, I'm stuck but still buying the best soon!

I forgot to include the link! Find a comparison chart online, probably in another forum and you can see whats the best kibbles around!

So… what do I feed my ferret?

Illustration depicting 'No Dog Food'Not dog food. Ferrets fed only dog food will eventually die of malnutrition. Obligate carnivores have special requirements for several nutrients missing from commercial dog foods. In addition, ferrets are unable to digest the high levels of carbohydrate in dog food. They need to get most of their calories from simple carbohydrates, protein, and fat. Ferrets have such a short intestinal tract they can't eat very much at a time, and therefore need a concentrated diet. They should get most of the calories in their diet from fat, the most concentrated source of energy.

Characteristics of a good ferret diet

A good diet for a ferret has to be:

* high in energy

* high in protein

* low in fiber

I read somewhere that ferrets are obligate carnivores which means they can only digest meat and animal by products. They do not digest vegetables and do not anything with sugar in their diet because they affect the pancreas leading to a condition called insulinoma. Dried fruits and vegetables normally cause intestinal blockage and the only way around this is surgery.
