ferret dietI have a one and a half year old ferret that belonged to my friend and I was wondering what a ferret might eat.
http://www.miamiferret.org/fhc/diet.htm "The unique ferret digestion system demands a food that can provide adequate nutrition assimilation in the four hours that food is in the ferret's system. Ferrets are strict carnivores, meaning they are meat eaters. But they also have an extremely high metabolic rate. Most ferrets eat 8 to 10 small meals every 24 hours to sustain the energy required by their high metabolic rate. Ferrets consume 4 to 7% of their body weight in high-quality, easily digestible kibbled food daily."
I didn't realize ferrets were carnivores. Maybe that has something to do with their smell. My friends who had a couple ferrets seem to feed them a lot of fruits and lettuce and things. Is this okay for a ferret's diet?
I'm surprised that the ferrets would eat lettuce and stuff like that. Back when I had mine, they would occasionally nibble on a piece of fruit, but much preferred meat. They are weasels, and weasels hunt other rodents, frogs, lizards, even birds. They do have specific ferret food, but we had great health with a high quality cat food too.
I used the ferrat food i bought from the store. I never had mine go for meat. Do they chase mice around? That would be soo cool.
I like ferrets but my parents won't let me have one. They won't let me get a cat either which are my favorite animals. At least I have a Hedgehog and two gerbils. So, Please send me a chocolate covered ferret. From, Molly [:
mike (63.176.159.162):Ferrets eat meat, here is a list of meat that you could possibly feed, preferably raw, unseasoned: mice, rats, guinea pigs, rabbits, 1 day old chicks (treat basis, high in fat), beef, chicken, cornish hens, superworms, venison, lamb, veal, turkey, elk, fish, shrimp, sardines, tuna, almost any kind of meat. They can eat it lizards, but I don't really recommend that, I've never heard of anyone with any success there. I do know some ferrets who go "fishing" with feeder goldfish. Not sure about that practice either. Anyway, also high quality kibble, no fruits or veggies added, Top 5 ingredients all human-safe meat products, not by-products. Good kibbles to check out: Innova Evo, Wysong Archetype, Totally Ferret, Ziwipeak. Also high protein kitten food is sometimes good. The Evo Kitten kibble is cheaper, then ferret and has basically the same ingredients. Remember the eat about a 1/4 cup of of kibble a day, so these bags will last you. I suggest mixing a few types of kibble at once, because ferrets imprint on the food, you will need another kibble available incase one food runs out or is no longer sold. Plus it adds variety and helps make sure he has a complete diet. Great health is a result of the treats you feed, which should be just as high qualtiy as your kibble, and your kibble or raw meats. endora (24.45.126.104): Ferrets will eat live mice. If you want to try this, you should start with a pinkie mouse. My ferret eats live pinkie mice. It can be hard to watch. But to coax him into finishing it, I always add Ferrevite or Ferretone to give it more flavor. It is good for enrichment and to keep him active. I don't consider this cruel, because animals in the wild kill and eat live prey. KateyBate (66.227.233.47): Lettuce, fruits, veggies are pretty bad for a ferret. They are undisgestible because he is a carnivore. They do not provide any nutritional value either. In fact, they could possibly cause blockages in the stomach, and have to be removed by surgery! You may find that a ferret on this diet will have stringy poos, green poos, mostly diarrhea, or his poos will practically stop because there is a blockage. If this is the case, see a vet immediately! Preferably a vet with ferret experience, however any vet should be able to take an xray and determine what is happening!
Ferrets are obligate carnivores and eat mostly live meat.Ferrets enjoy a variety of live prey including mice, rats, gerbils, rabbits, quails, rabbits, guinea pigs, squirrels, chipmunks, snakes, and small lizards.Sometimes cherrios can be fed as treats, but only the bland kind. Ferrets eat almost every rodent except capybaras and cavies!
Feed a good high quality cat food. Can also give some supplements available from your pet store. Ferrets enjoy fruits and vegetables. Do not give them dairy products. You can check this site for more ferret info and good links where you'll find more in depth info on feed and care for ferrets.todayspet.blogspot.com

Ferrets should not be given fruits or vegetables at any time. they are OBLIGATE carnivores, meaning strict carnivores. Any and all treats should be meat based. Kibble should be a ferret kibble or HIGH quality cat food such as wellness.Cheerios are not exactly a good treat because they have zero value and the chance of it being not digested and causing blockages. Good treats are unseasoned, cooked or not, meats that are safe, from a known source. Also Bandit treats, N-Bones which are meat based and good for teeth, as well as SOME meat based cat treats. |

What am I reading here????? Mice, guinea pigs, one day old chicks?!?! Where do u people come from? If you are teaching a ferret to hunt and eat smaller animals that is for your own sick pleasure. Ferrets are domesticated these days and with all the good quality, high protein ferret food available there is no reason for a ferret to tear up another animal. Those who push this kind of behavior need to reevaluate there own sick entertainment. It's things like this that people read when they are researching owning a ferret and they are given a whole warped view of what it is to own a ferret. Yes, ferrets are carnivores (NOT rodents), but guess what, so are you. Are you going to your back yard to search for rodents to eat? Go ahead and try it and we'll be nice enough to cover the carcus with ferretone so you can shove all of the nasty mess down. For those who are genuinly interested in ferrets: Ferrets are amazing little creatures. They are NOT rodents and they do not sit in a cage quietly like gunea pigs. Ferrets must get out and exercise. They need to play and interact with other ferrets and humans alike. They are social animals and have not one mean bone in their bodies. If a ferret is chasing mice to eat you can be sure there is a sick human behind that behavior. Ferrets need a high protein and high fat diet, but please leave the rodents running around your back yard alone. This day and time there is a number of high quality ferret foods out there. And no, cat food won't do. Now, ferret food is indeed expensive, but still not an excuse to be cheap and buy lower quality cat food. If you cannot afford to pay about $14 for a four pound bag of ferret kibble then don't get a ferret. There are also specific ferret treats available and the last time I checked Cheerios doesn't have "ferret friendly" stamped on the box. Those things are fiber which a ferret has problems digesting which can lead to a blockage. They are also riddled with sugar which ferrets don't need cause it can lead to insulinoma. Ferrets are wonderful pets and they will keep you entertained just watchinng their antics, but with ferrets comes responsibility. If you cannot find the time to play with a ferret for several hours each and every day don't get one. If you can't dedicate time to keeping their cage clean at all times then don't get one. If you can't "ferret proof" your house so the ferret is safe then don't get a ferret. If you have no understanding of all the medical needs a ferret will have as it gets older don't get one. If you believe that a ferret is a rodent then you are purely ignorant; please refrain from getting a ferret. And if you cannot do something as simple as buy a bag of ferret kibble then give a ferret a break, don't get one. There are too many ferrets out there that are just sitting in cages and being neglected by humans who just wanted one because they are cute. They never gave any thought to the care involved in having a ferret. If you are out there considering getting a ferret be responsible and do some research first. Visit a local ferret shelter. The people who run the shelters are more then happy to educate you on ferret ownership. For those who are aware of the care involved in having a ferret and are ready to care for a ferret properly then you couldn't ask for a better addition to the family. Ferrets are special and need responsible special care. Personally, I can't see myself without ferrets. They are my sweet babies. Please, please, please research ferret ownership before you get one. We "ferret people" are just as happy to talk about our ferrets as our own children. No doubt this posting with generate quite a heated response from those one day old chick eating people, but I wouldn't expect any less from a vermin hunting, living in the middle ages freak. |
