My ferret gerbil has severe aggression disorders

Comment #1 Big Dog from The Woods -

First you need to find out if it is a ferrit or a gerbil.

Comment #2 citronkid from bird nation -

LOL! I will be honest I have seen some strange animals but the ferret gerbil is a new breed on me. I think that could very well be the root of the aggression problem.

I got a ferret (Ellie) for xmas who is mild tempered and for valintines day my dad got another (Izzy) but she is quite aggressive. When they "play" together Izzy will "play fight" and doock while Ellie will back up and hiss...is this normal? She does it a lot and i don't know if the two are playing or Izzy is bullying poor Ellie. Izzy is the aggressive one...the first thing she did was lach onto my neck and didn't want to let go.

Thank you

What kind of aggression is normal for a ferret?

How far will they go?

And can they be tamed?

Comment #5 sampson from arizona -

izzy is probably wanting to play but ellie doesnt want to be ed with at the moment so she hisses..i wouldnt worry about it, unless theres bloodshed.

My ferrets strom is very agressive but she is three years old. My ohter one Bosque is five years old and is not agressive but used to be. I think its just an age thing. They should grow out of it.

My ferrets storm (female) is very agressive but she is three years old. My other one Bosque (male)is five years old and is not agressive but used to be. I think its just an age thing. They should grow out of it. Or it might just be a female thing.

mike from The 4th planet from the sun:

What do you mean by 'aggession disorders'? Please explain this more. It may be just that he was abused before he came to you, or noone has taught him what is ok. It is up to you to be 'alpha ferret' and teach him how to behave with you.

Hollie (69.157.22.210):

Izzy may just be trying to show dominance. The usual case is, they are play fighting, which looks rough to us, but if there is no pee/poo/blood, then it is ok. They need to 'fight it out' in order to set their hierarchy. You are total alpha ferret, now who's next after you? Thats what they are doing, and yes it is normal. If you hear screaming, just keep a look out and make sure one isn't continually running away from the other. If Ellie is not running back for more, there could be a problem. You should step in, seperate them for awhile, and slowly introduce the other to their smells, and keep them apart for awhile. Izzy is prob grabbing onto to you because she's trying to dominate you. Scruff her, put her on her back, and "drag" her along the floor a few inches. This is showing your dominance. Continually do this until she learns that you are out-ranking her.

Hallie Ibarra (137.164.228.66):

Ferrets are domesticated already. Black-footed ferrets are the only wild ones, however you will not be having one of those as a pet. I'm not sure what you mean by "tamed" and "how far will they go?" My ferret has bitten me, but never brought blood. If they do not know you, they are still getting to know what is ok. Teach them what you will and won't tolerate. You have to learn how to train their behavior. Here is a link to multiple sites to help you. Also, litter training is possible and fairly easy.

What do you mean by aggressive?

Hi Mike, this is how ferret differs from gerbil...

The ferret is a domestic mammal of the type Mustela putorius furo. Ferrets are sexually dimorphic predators with males being substantially larger than females. They typically have brown, black, white, or mixed fur, have an average length of approximately 20 inches (51 cm) including a 5 inch (13 cm) tail, [1] weigh about 1.5–4 pounds (0.7–2 kg), and have a natural lifespan of 7 to 10 years.

Gerbils are typically between six and twelve inches (150 to 300 mm) long, including the tail which makes up approximately one half of their total length. One species however, the Great Gerbil, or Rhombomys opimus, originally native to Turkmenistan, can grow to more than 16 inches (400 mm) in length. The average adult gerbil weighs approximately 2 1/2 ounces.

I prefer to have Gerbil as pet rather that a ferret..
