Do ferrets need shots like cats and dogs from the vet? Should they have the check ups once a year?

Yes you should take you ferret to the vet. I think they can get the rabies shot. Usually if you get them from the pet store they will be have their initial immunizations.

Yes, you should get their Distemper shot and Rabies shot once a year. Distemper is a fatal disease. They should also be tested for ADV. I don't know what it stands for, but it is contagious (with other animals) and is also fatal. Your vet will know what it is and to test for it. If you got any papers with your ferret, it should say whether first shots were done, and if it was tested.
