My friend has a ferret that wont use the litter box. In fact the sucker goes around the box and not in it. ANy suggestions?

Ferrets are incredibly smart and can sometimes be trained using a reward method. Keep putting the ferret in the litter box when it looks like he is about to go. Once it uses the litter box give it a treat.

if she keeps it in a cage have her simply but about two inches of litter in the bottom and they have no place else to go but in the litter also they will like digging in it and sleeping in the un-used parts of it. If she keeps it free roaming have her put a puppy potty pad down in EVERY corner that the animal has access to and a corner litter box on top of each one untill she knows what corner the ferret will favor then the other pans can be removed but keep the pads down for mistakes.

mine did the same thing when i let her free roam... then i put her in a cage and she uses the litter box every time. because they like to seperate their litter from the food and the bedding, its best to start off w/ an enclosed space, until they catch on to the idea of the litter box and what itss for, and then gradually allow more space. the playpens work for expanding at first, and then make sure to reward the ferret everytime they go in the litterbox. dont forget a puppy pad underneath until they are at a 90% accuracy level, and also keep the litter really clean so they dont get too discouraged. leave a small amount of soiled litter though, so they can identify where to go.

Endora,

Some ferrets are picky about the type of litter. Try newspaper flattened down. Puppy pads are working really good for me when he is out of the cage. In the cage he is always perfect, unless I haven't cleaned in more than a day.
