Wolfgang from Dog Pound -

When I was growing up my neighbor owned a ferret even though ferrets aren't legal in California. Are ferrets legal where you live?

"Ferret Legalization Efforts

"Did you know that ferrets are not legal to own as pets everywhere in the United States? While in recent years, most laws that once banned ferret ownership have been changed, there are some areas that still restrict ferret ownership. Only two states ban the keeping of ferrets as pets - California and Hawaii, but there are smaller locales that restrict ownership even though statewide there is no law against it. Check with your local government agencies if you are not sure of the laws in your area.

"Legalization efforts have been ongoing for two restricted areas - California and New York City - for years. Those working on changing the laws in these areas are working tirelessly for something that most of us take for granted - the right to own our pet of choice. Please take the time to learn about two organizations doing such work - Californians for Ferret Legalization and NYCFerrets.com. Perhaps you can help make a difference!"

I think its ridicules that ferrets are restricted in Hawaii, I mean if youv ever been there youll see mongoose running around like crazy, you can't get away from them. Ferrets and mongoose are all mustilids.

I know. I've read about this. Ferrets are legal where I live, and good thing too because I love these little guys!! Hopefully soon something will be done and those bans can be lifted. Anyone know of a real way we can individually help?

It figures... California... That's one of those states where you can't do much of anything without it being illegal. In my opinion, most California legislators(and lobbyists) have a clever knack for standing on their hands and talking to someone's ass.

I'm greatfull I've never had to live in that state. But if you live in California and want to own a ferret but can't because of fear of being prosecuted for having one, then you can thank a bunch who have the "knack" for being an ass such as Animal Protection Institute{API), Animal Liberation Front(ALF has drawn attention from the FBI because of their terrorist tactics to get their way) and the "Shambolla" movement founded by former actress Tippie Hederon(It's been said Tippie Hederon use to trip out on LSD during her actress days). So that bunch of zellits, terrorists and acid heads, who have the mind set of a bunch of hippies, has lobbied to make it so a californian can not own a ferret with out being a criminal by doing so.

Shade in comment #1, Mongooses are not mustilids. They are viverridae. Don't feel bad about that though. Most of the American population are not aware of that either.

Other viverridae animals are meerkats, genets, linsangs, African and Asian civits, binturongs(bearcats) and fossa cats.

If you research the viverridae family(they are also in the carnivore order) you will find them to be a very interesting and beautiful family of animals. If you can find material that shows complete and detailed anatomy of the two animal families, you'll see the differences of what makes a mustilid a mustilid, and a viverridae a viverridae.

Mustilids are ferrets, weasles, badgers, wolverines, skunks, otters and mink.

Some people think prairie dogs are mustlids. They are rodants such as beavers and porccupines are.

California is working on the changes to make ferrets legal which makes sense since ferrets rank 3rd behind dogs and cats as the most kept pet in North America.

Todays Pet site below has good info on ferrets .. care, handling and health issues.

I live in Ga and I have a private shelter for ferrets for those that can no longer take care of their ferrets. The reason that ferrets r illegal in some area's goes to the reason I have my shelter people will buy them as pets and not know much about them. And then when they see how much work and time goes into the up keep of a ferret they no longer want them. The area i live in is trying to pass a law right now to not allow the sale of ferrets, not making them illegal but if people have to go a little out of their way to get one they will think twice about it and know what they r getting into. Alot of people that know very little about ferrets think they can just let there ferrets go in the wild and they will be just fine and thats not the case. These little fuzzie guys can not make it on their own like a house cat that u would just open the door and kick out they need special care and food to have along happy life. So anyone out there thinking about getting a ferret please know what u r getting yourself into and how much time and work these guys really do take. If not then u r going to make it were the people that really love these animals can no longer have them cause u r unable to care for them.
