My snapping turtle will not stop biteing and chasing my dogs what should i do?
Get a less agressive pet. Surely it is not chasing your dogs too quickly, huh?
Comment #2 Courtney (1) from The South -
Snapping turtles can really hurt. I would suggest trying to keep them in seperate areas. Only let the turtle out when the dogs are outside in the yard. Don't let any kids around the turtle either.
Comment #3 Jeanette from AZ -
I heard that turtles pose a threat for salmonella in babies and young children. I can't remember exactly what it was that caused it but I do remember it specifically since at the time my children were quite young and my brother had a turtle - I didn't let them go near it at all.
Comment #4 tokay from tokay village -
Turtles and other reptiles do carry salmonella. There was a rule, I am not sure if it is a law, but turtle under a certain size could not be sold. It wasn't because the turtles were dangerous or would bite but it was feared that child would put a baby turtle in it's mouth. I don't know any kid that would lick a turtle but I guess it might have happened. I thought alligator snapping turtles were protected. I didn't know you could legally have them as a pet.

Hi, I just recently cought 3 baby allogator snapper turtles, they are about an inch around. I have read a few sites and talked to a few pet store workers about taking care of them, I bought a tank, a UV light, and a temprature gauge. I put dirt in one half of the tank and constructed a slope to the water in the tank, they have enough water so their heads can reach the surface without swimming as instructed by a website, I bought turtle food and placed them on the dirt and in the water. my problem: I found one of the turtles beried in the dirt the other two are wqell hidden, the one i have seems to be sick.. hes not moving much and seems to be not eating. Is there a way to trai nthem to eat? I am afraid they might die soon... any suggestions as to why this would be happening?

alligator snapping turtles are carnivores and you need to feed them meat not turtle food :)

I have a large aquarium, as well as large waterfall and pond for them to play in also have a fishery so they will get lots of fish! I had one before and he made a great pet and was adopted later by a zoo after he reached 300lbs. If you have one please let me know! thanks, Seth

I have a baby aligator snapper and he eats alot we by him about 12-24 dozen large feeder fish every 1-2 weeks. Does anyone know if this is to much. He is starting to look obese for a little guy and I dont want him to have a mini turtle heart attack.

Hi guys, My 3 baby alligator snapping turtles have been doing great they have grown around 1/4 inch so far, but this morning one of the larger of thr 3 turtles was just laying at the bottum of the tank. I took him out and he seemed lifeless... so I flushed him with warmer water in thye sink and he started struggling so thats a good sign, he is alive but very weak right now if you touch him he will move alittle open his eyes or pull his head back, other then that he will just close his eyes and lay there.... I know the little turtle would do that but he was sleeping. I have this one on a towel right now in the dry air, I think the water got to cold for him... I went on a 2 day christmas vacation and I was not informed that my mother turned off the heat... If I knew this I would have turned on the tank heater! I'm not sure how cold the tank got but it was 20 degrees outside for those 2 days with no heat on in the house... Do you think that may have soemthing to do with it? I put around 80 degree water on the turtle for 30 seconds just incase he was very cold inside.. Now he just seems to sit there he is holding his head up though... he is in a 40 gallon aquarium with 2 4 inch sucker fish and 2 other alligator snappers, I feed them freaze dried worms and shrimp, is there anything I should change? I'm thinking of buying another tank and putting the sucker fish in there. If anyone has any idea what is wrong with him or with my living conditions for them, please tell me @ Tyran_14@yahoo.com ps, I keep the water temp at 70 degrees in the tank. Thanks

I found a hatchling alligator snapping turtle in the courtyard of my apartment. I set up a tank, half water and half rocks, with a light to keep it warm. I'm lost in how to care for it and don't want it to die. He seems kinda of sluglish, if anyone could give me any information from personal experience it would be greatly appreciated. Please contact me through e-mail lilone8985@yahoo.com

Hi my name is brad and i read your post online about your snapping turtle. do you still need help in reference to keeping him? if so i can help, but if you have a source then you should be fine, if you ever need to double check something then i can help there as well as i have turtles and have a done a great deal of research on turtles. the first thing to consider in the turtle that you have is do you really have an alligator snapping turtle or just a common snapping turtle, cus that mistake can be made very easily. the thing to look for is white spots on teh bottom of the carapice, the turtles belley, if you have spots hes a common, if no spots then hes an alligator snapper. teh next thing to consider is do you really want to run the risk of keeping him if he is an alligator snapper because if you are caught it is a felony offense, do not pass go do not collect $200 go directly to jail and get a big fine, in missouri its like $5000 minimum. if you dont wanna run that risk then get rid of it. the conservation office is a good place to ask questions on how to safely do that, as well as myself of course but they will be much more familiar with your area than myself. if you have other questions just contact me, bthomas40@gmail.com or 417-379-7781 is my cell, call or text me anytime, text preferrabley
