I keep her in a cage and she loves it, yes there are alot of extra responsibilites with a squirrel than there is a cat or dog but a wild squirrel has a life expectancy of 1 year in the wild, in capitivy its 20 years. So not only have I given this squirrel a much longer life, but I gave it a life altogether, she would have been dead at 4 weeks old. So the fact that my squirrel loves her cage (although large and expensive) and the fact that a squirrel can live a happy, much easier and longer life, to me it's fine to have a pet squirrel as long as you know what ur getting into and take on the responsibilty. Comment #77 Yellaboy (68.124.60.140) - I have a grey squirrel. I think it's a female. I can't be sure though. I thought that I had a mout problem and I bought a sticky mouse trap. when I woke up the next day thinking I got a mouse I went into the kitchen and would you look at this huge thing. She thrashed and thrashed, and unfortunately by the time I got to her, she lost a foot. Now I can't put her back in the wild. I contacted the wildlife rehabbers in my areah, and they said "Hypothetically" of course that the animal would just be put to death if it could not be rehabilitated. So I have only had her for a couple days now. I have no ideah how to handle this I gave her some watered down crushed sleeping medicine so I could get her off the trap, and I did my best to bandage up her leg. (I'm a nurse by profession luckily) and I put her in a cage but she thrashes, and she's absolutley ferral, so I can't get anywhere near her to change her dressings. Also in my research on them, I learned that their mating season was during the fall. How do I know if she's preg. or not? I don't want her to die, so if anyone knows how I may be able to get her calm (Domestic enoug) to just not worry about her attacking me, that would be a big help. Comment #78 Lisa (24.129.141.182) - I have a wonderful pet. He is a 9 month old eastern gray tree squirel. His name is Pippin. over the summer I rescued 7 gray squirrel orphans (3 were siblings). One passed away from unexplained conditions, but the others have done very well. I released 5 of them in November when they were about 5 months old and they all doing great! Pippin we decided to keep because he was so bonded to us. He has a very large cage but spends much time free in the house. He gets along great with our dog who has learned NOT to chase squirrels. He is a great little guy. My kids (12 & 8) tell all their friends that 'mom' loves her squirrel like one of her children - that;s not far from the truth. Squirrels make really wonderful pets - but they are not for everyone and are illigal in many states, Fortunally, we live in Florida where it is perfectly legal and I have come to know quite a few squirrel owners locally. If you truly want to care for and keep a squirrel I suggest you contact a rehabilitaor as I did. I was taught so much about the furry guys and was much better prepared for the enormous commitment they require. I LOVE SQUIRRELS!!! Comment #79 Vee (67.175.211.161) - Hi, Comment #80 Ants (67.42.196.7) - You will just have to wear heavy gloves to change the bandage. Watch how well she moves around they usually will do fine wild with only one limb missing. You can set her free once well, if that's the only problem. Comment #81 rascal squirrel from rescue house - I have rescued a tree squirrel hit by a car going at least 40MPH. He appeared dead with lots of blood coming from mouth. I wrapped him in a sweater and when got home I put him in a crate with warming blanked. Abt 5 hrs later he began moving around. I have been treating its mouth with antiseptic and giving antibiotics. He is now missing both his top front teeth and can't eat. I have been orally giving him cooked grains and cat food (and water)put through the blender through surenge. He is not difficult to handle, I think because of the extent of injury. This is now day three and he is able scoot around, sleeps alot, but have the abrasions and cuts being treated well and he is doing better. I am hopeful to release him (he's an adult-have no idea the age), but need help to know how long for the top front teeth to grow back? Do I need to file the bottom teeth? No rescue/nature centers would take him. I think he will be fine if I can keep him ok till heals and teeth grow back so can eat. Any knowledgable help appreciated. Comment #82 Joe (172.164.169.91) - I have raised gray squirrels, several times, they have TONS of energy, though they are very easy to tame. Hell, even the squirrels in your back yard are easy to tame; eat from your hands, follow you (even into your home), and communicative. They are fairly intelligent, though their exploring and curious behavior leads them into trouble - quite often. If decisions were never made to domesticate anything - ever - we would not have dogs, or cats, or fish, or mice, rats, parrots, etc... Squirrels are happy if they are not starving, if they are not tormented, and if they were not captured as adults to be caged. BUT if you have the access to a baby, and raise it well, it will have as long and happy of a life as any pet rat, though twice as cute, and more mischievous. GOOD LUCK! Comment #83 BJ (64.12.116.206) - We live on the outskirts of a small town, have 2 acres behind us, and neighbors who are just a few steps away. We see squirrels all the time outside, but never attempt to get close to them, since we also have 8 cats. Comment #84 jen (71.99.73.130) - wow. its amazing how much conflict there is on this page over a simple question. try www.brighten farms.com they have clean well cared for hand fed exotics ranging from squirrels, skunks, opossums, foxes, chipmunks, coons, duprasis, woodchucks, chincillas, even coyote pups as well as various cages and accessories to make your new friend feel at home. they will give you information to make sure that a baby squirrel or whatever exotic you are thinking of caring for is what you really want aswell. but i will warn you now if you ever tire of your pet. its against the law to just set them free. its considered cruel to set free a technically domestic animal that cant fend for itself. i hope this helps. good luck on your new furry friend! Comment #85 Sloan from Planet Squrl - Hi I`ve been dying for a pet squirrel if anybody knows where I can get one. Plz respond! Comment #86 Sloan from Planet Squrl - This is to CHad Butll if it was illegal to own a squirrel and you reported us to the police half of us would have had a cop standing @ the door about having a pet squrl Comment #87 Boris's Mom (4.226.201.186) - I have a 4 month old fox squirrel we named Boris who is the best pet I've ever had. I'm a veterinary nurse and another nurse found him while walking around our vet clinic one day after a storm. He was one of four babies, the other three already dead, and Boris was clinging to life. I warmed him, gave him a drop of Karo syrup and a little water, took him home, did a lot of research and did it right, and have now raised a healthy, happy little boy, a whole pound of attitude! He is the joy of my and my husband's lives and lives quite happily amongst our two dastardly dachshunds, a sweet little house kitty and a parakeet. Boris has a huge cage with hammocks and tunnels and shelves and ladders to keep him busy, along with large-diameter oak branches to climb and gnaw and tiny stuffed animals to fight, cuddle and toss around, which is the cutest thing. I didn't think anything could ever be so cute and affectionate as this little squirrel. He has deepened our appreciation for life in general. I LOVE BORIS AND ALL SQUIRRELS! Comment #88 Boris's Mom (4.226.201.186) - I want to add that Boris spends a LOT of time out of his cage. His favorite thing is to jump around on the floor with a towel -- he rolls around on it, runs around it and jumps on top of it over and over. I'll throw it over his head and he jumps around like a little ghost, then pops his head out practically laughing, like, "let's do it again, mama!". No kidding, you can see the joy on his face. My boy would not be happy if he were confined to his cage all the time. He doesn't hesitate to let me know it, either. When he is out, I have to walk around wearing protective clothing and leather fingerless gloves to protect my arms, hands, and legs, mainly because his nails rip tender skin and not so much for biting. He's my little ball of joy, my little baby skwerl. I LOVE BORIS AND I LOVE SQUIRRELS! Comment #89 Myriah (75.210.117.95) - Yo yo I like totally think squirrels are like super cute!!!!!! OMG! I just can't stand it! I would like totally love to like have one as like a pet or something. :) I have a little pink dress I've already made for one. It is like soooo awesome! Comment #90 Ampersand (76.250.241.102) - Ok, quit with the PETA and Green Peace crap, guys. He is looking for a breeder -- which means it is the same as if he were looking for a dog breeder. He is not looking for someone who caught a wild squirrel to sell, hes looking for someone that sells squirrels that are bred and raised domesticated, for generations. Comment #91 Elaine (68.63.122.162) - I hope all of you with pet squirrels realize that in captivity, they MUST have a special diet and Full Spectrum Lighting. If you would like to know how to keep your squirrel healthy, please feel free to join thesquirrelboard.com. Great people there with very knowledgeable info. Comment #92 Anna (75.148.59.201) - I become foster mom to a baby grey squirrel who was less than a few days old. I work in a vet clinic and someone brought her in because she was in a cats mouth. She had puncture wounds and pneumonia. I have had her for 2 weeks now. She was only a few days old when I got her and about the size of my thumb. I want to keep her as a pet as long as she would be happy. I have raised baby wild bunnies and after a few weeks they became frightened of me so I let them go.
