Comment #51 TheAnimalTrainer (71.92.147.114) -

I haven't read all of these posts. I stopped and couldn't read any more after the one about ferrets being feral. Just because an animal will nip does not mean it lacks domestication. Are chihuahuas feral?

Lack of training or improper handling with make ANY animal bite, domesticated or not. I have had ferrets for over ten years and I have taken notorious fear-biting ferrets and retrained them into loving affectionate pets. I have ferrets that NEVER bite, they do not chase feet, they give kisses and enjoy being petted.

They are also in a cage that I could fit in and get out to play for 3-4 hours a day. Ferrets require attention just like any other animal. If you stuffed a puppy in a kennel run and only took it out once a week throughout its life, how "tame" do you think that dog would be? Use your brains people.

Squirrels as pets - I am not against it depending on the method you used to get the squirrel and your intentions for it after you get it. Do your research - LOTS of research, contact people who have or have had squirrels as pets and ask a million questions about behavior and handling. Check all state and local laws regarding "wild animals" and look up costs for upkeep and proper nutrition.

Good Luck.

I have recently found an abandoned grey squirrel and have decided to raise it on my own because I'm getting the feeling that the rehabilitator here wants nothing to do with her. I have learned much on line but would love any input from someone who knows the ropes, if you know what I mean.

If anyone could point me in the right direction as to how to find out if she is legal in N.Y. as a pet(in the country) it would be greatly appreciated as well.

CHad Butll you are a dumb ass that does not know what you are talking about. it is not illegal to have a squirrel everywhere in the u.s. for one where i live if you by the squirrel from a breeder and have the papers for it you can have them. and yes i have talked to the state department of natural resources that is responsible for this so go off dumbass get the facts before you say something it is dumbass people like you that cause problems. hahahaha talk now.

Comment #59 Alicia from Ltown -

Comment #60 Sunny Windingstad (71.236.50.65) -

FYI, all - ferrets are NOT totally domesticated, but they are endangered. There are small pockets of Black Footed Ferrets in the South Dakota area. They prey on Prairie Dogs....

To note, though, there are wild dogs, cats, rats, mice, rabbits, snakes, and on and on - does that mean that they shouldn't be pets??? It's personal. You decide what you do.

, Reptiles: Beware
Hey Alicia, what's the history on your little squirrel guy? Was it maybe mistreated before you got it, was it running free?

Last night while walking the fence, damn deer alwayse running through it- I found a trail in the snow.

At the end of it I found a verry wet and cold grey squirrel.

It fought hard for a few seconds and I just held it to my chest as I walked back to the house ignoreing the horses for a while.

Found a decent cage in my garage and that is now it's current home in my bedroom.

Last night is calmed down totally after it warmed up but today it's a bit touchy, but still allows me to touch it, pick it up though it doesn't like to be held.

I think it's male and verry fat.

Unshure if it's sick, last night it was unable to use it's rear legs (the wet/cold) but doing far better today and it ocasionally chitters at me and it's alwayse watching me.

I gave it the opertunity to bite me and it wouldn't and i'm afraid to put it back becuase i don't know where it came from and where it thinks it was going.

weather is clearing up, depending on how it's doing i might stick it to a tree in the area i found it in a couple days

and see what it does.

right now it will not eat or drink...

gave it bread, peanutbutter, water.

it ws sleeping in the bread this morning.

Just wanted to share this.

I wanted to get a pet squirrel but couldn't so I got a hamster. Lots of fun, he falls asleep on me sometimes. Don't give up on having a fun pet if you can't get a squirrel.

Comment #66 Fallofthewild.com (24.23.64.113) -

From an environmentalist's point of view, take all the damn squirrels you want. Or better yet, a chipmunk. I don't care. IN fact, keep a whole flock of starlings and house sparrows too!

But I am honestly considering getting a chipmunk, and trying that. Maybe I'm crazy, but I was thinking about catching one of the chipmunks that steal from my bird feeders. They will just get eaten by the niegbor's cat anyway.

I have a pet squirrel, she was rescued before her eyes opened. shes full grown now and the best pet I've ever had, besides horses. I always wanted a squirrel but settled for chinchillas after I gave up on ever finding one, I still raise the chins but the squirrel gets my favoritism. I'll admit she has her fits where she'll run around and jump on you like hell is after her. I just put her in the cage and get her out and hour or so later after she calms down. usually shes very fun to play with although she likes certain people and not others it seems, she plays alot rougher with my fiance, and if shes eating wont let him near her, shes so cute and loves climbing in my closet ruining my fav outfits with her nails when ever I forget to close the door. she lives outside in a large cage but plays in the house when I"m home and shes calm. her nails are so sharp I have to wear a sweater when shes out, and when shes in one of her hyper moods I have to put her away because I'm afraid shell catch my eye when she jumps off a cabinet to me.

it is Legal to own a squirrel in FL. although I dont think its right to catch one in the wild and keep it. mine was a baby and has known nothing else, but that I'm her mommy who handfed her, so shes just as happy as any other regular pet, with the exception that shes the only one besides the dog who gets full run of the house. unlike rabbits or chins shes always easy to find and usually within 5 feet of me where ever I am. it is dificult to do somethings like be on the computer she is very jealous of my laptop because I try not to let her near it because she starts typing when she walks on it. last week she got a hold of it when I turned my back, I turned around to see her feelings about me keeping her away from the computer, she had one button in her mouth and 5 already off and more were flying as she was digging my buttons off like a dog digging up a bone. luckily they went back on. Now I hide the computer when shes out.

Squirrels are fun and great pets but do scratch and its not wirth it to cut thier nails as they grow so fast it had to be done weekly until I gave up and just started wearing the sweater and jeans. she also loved to bite but usually not hard, unless you are trying to take food from her, she has attacked a few hands for that, but alot of dogs do that as well though.

I would like to find someone in my area with a male to see if we can raise any babies, I'm in SW FL. if anyone knows of any links or websites for people with pet squirrels let me know.

Hey CHad Butll - Quit "reporting" everybody who dont agree with you! I hate you treehuggers but I aint blackened yalls faces... yet. So just shut up, do us all a favor, and stay with your own people. Or better yet, go blow Satan in hell where you belong.

Comment #69 1sanepersonleft (71.101.181.252) -

hey i like animals and stuff i havent gotten a squirrel yet but when i researched i got the same **** i got when i was searching about my rescued starling ive resued several animals released some succsefully and the were all HAPPY. people who say they should be taking to a rehibilitator once or twice on their site makes sense most people will take it kill it and then say dont keep em they will never be happy well cant say that till youve raised one can you huh ive heard maybe 1 or 2 people say something other than good about starlings and squirels. point is if your smart enough to take care of em good thats 1 less hunter shooting em which is another thing if you eat what you kill than fine no problem dont offer me any but go ahead but the people who kill for fun, if i meet you then why not some recreational trigger finger cut offs.anyway thats it raised right they r good pets

Comment #70 Jeff Riddlebaugh (71.206.112.249) -

Chad leave everyone alone just do us all a favor and keap your lame comments to yourself BTW, If you people are interested in squirrles go Google sugar gliders you can learn everything about them and where you can by them. A sugar glider is like a domestocated flying squirrle. One more thing, if you don't have anything positive to say about ferrets you obviosly don't know much about ferrets so we don't want hear you.

Well, as of around 3 pm today, I am the parent of 3 8-10 day old gray squirrels that were blown out of a tree. I waited several hours for the mom to return, but no good. The wind was nearly blowing the nest away, which is unreal wind for around here, SC. I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to do with them when they grow up, maybe keep one, release the others, or give them to a local educational center that I used to work with. Although, they do taste good as I well know...hmmmm...nah, couldn't do it after the work of raising them. I've raised a litter of pups from around the same age, so I know I'm in for a blast.

And for the folks with the nonsense about wild animals belonging outside, non-domesticated, etc. Where do you think YOUR ancestors lived for a couple thousand years at the least, more than likely a couple million? Yeah, yours weren't always inside either, and neither was your Yorky Foo FOos, or Buttons'. Domestication starts with "wild" animals, and it is a mutually favorable relationship in many cases. As much as you think those little critters are just LOVVVVVINg allll that freedom, YOU have been stuck in your warm little house along with your ancestors for far too long to remember what it was like to only be alive long enough for the next meal. When it comes down to it, I dont care one way or the other, but be rational for Pete's sake, and be somewhat educated.

Also, in response to what I keep seeing on the net, theres no Federal ban on keeping wild animals. Endangered species regulations & laws restricting research on animals come closest. Most laws on wildlife are state oriented. In SC, keeping a squirrel, or many wild animals not considered endangered=100% legal. I have for education & as pets. Ive seen "illegal to possess wild animal" statements everywhere. They appear to be attempts to dissuade people from keeping animals which is understandable but using false information is only going to hurt those efforts. Be careful about keeping wild animals but it isnt federally illegal.

Jake, I have a female squirrel, I love her to death, and would like to find her a mate, shes the best thing that ever happened to me and I'd like more of them around. would you consider letting me adopt one or sell one to me? mine fell out of a tree before her eyes opened, she loves me to death. but yeah feeding is a bitch especially the forst few months and they drink milk for 6 months.
