i love squirrels. i hate people who say stuff like squirrels should be left outside. people can do what they want. so shut up you ****** squirrel haters

I think a squirrel is a great pet. Flying squirrels are very good pets, but you can only get them a few months out of the year. People that don't like us having them as pets need to leave, no one cares you don't want us having them.

Comment #29 Teresa Lyford (65.143.125.193) -

I have a grey pet squirrel, she is 7mon old, and she is a great pet, I found her when she was only about a wk old. She is very bonded to me and my hubby, we do not cage her, she has her own bed, she plays ball with us, gives us kisses, and constantly demands attention from us. she litterly thinks she is a dog, she gets along with our dogs and cat. I would never release her back outside, for the fact that I beleived once a wild animal is domesticated they wont be able to survive back in the wild, they dont know the dangers or how to protective themseleves.

Squirrels are so funny.i spent my day at the local park watching them.i would like to take care of one but i dont know where to get them from. And i dont want to go digging around the bushes cause ppl would think i was nuts and had lost my dog in the bushes or something.Maybe i will be lucky and find a baby this spring.

Hey Guys, I see that many of you have been asking where to find squirrels. I have 2 in my crockpot right now. They are wild animals and should be left outside. Period. If you want a pet I would recommend a cat or a dog. Keep the squirrels in the back yard. -Enjoy them feed them! Fatten them up! I always give them lots and lots of corn. They love it and it makes them good and fat! -it also slows them down a little! -yum

I am preparing to purchase a Red Squirrel myself. I agree that some animals should be left in the wild. But Animals purchased properly through a licensed breeder are breed to be pets. With all animals, you need to give them the attention they deserve. A domesticated squirrel can live a extremely happy life up to twelve or fourteen years. A wild squirrel has a life span of seven years. I see nothing wrong with having an exotic animal as a pet, as love as you give them a good home. If you find a baby animal abandoned, call your local animal shelter and ask them what step need to be taken to care for this animal. Plus you should check state and federal laws of which animals are allowed to be pets. Exotic pets will take a lot of work, but the rewards are worth the effort. I am a squirrel fan and I am also writing a book on having squirrels as pet. Good luck to those who endeavor to have a unique pet.

Comment #37 racquel from ok -

squirrels rarely make good pets... they love to chew.. and they have to chew to keep their teeth worn down. Squirrels need alot of room to run, jump and play. also, I dont know of many states where its legal to own a squirrel.

They get moody when caged for too long.

Never spay a squirrel.

I know of people neutering them but didnt seem to change their behavior.. some squirrels suffer some brain damage when they fall from the nest... and they would make a better pet.. check w/ your state laws.. and your local wildlife rehaber.

My son, who's a tree climber, has given a home to a baby squirrel who's tree was cut down and no mother. It is turning into a cute little pet and loves to eat peanut butter. He has a cage but roams loose a lot. Does anyone have a solution for pet droppings? Can they be trained in this area?

Clearly some people don't understand the concept of pets. All pets are wild animals. So to say that it it ignorant to keep squirrels makes no sense. It is no different than having a dog or cat as a pet. You cannot serioulsy think that just because they have been domesticated for the past four thousand years they are somehow are considered tamer than squirrels. That has not changed the genetic makeup of the animals. That has not changed the instincts of the animals, yet they make great pets. They are the same animals that previously lived in the wild.

hi george, did you find what you were looking for

Ferrets are a TOTALLY domesticated species. They do not exist as wild animals. Endora you are clearly a moron and although you claim to have "been around a few ferrets" you are clearly too pig ignorant to have actually learned anything from the experience.

Maybe ferrets bite you because they hate you and your ferret bashing pet-nazi ways?

Comment #42 Big Dog from The Woods -

I think everyone would he happy to hear your views on Ferrets, but no one wants to hear you insult those with differing opinions.

George...seems your simple question turned into a debate! I just can't help but offer my opinion as well!

I've worked as an animal rehabillitator and in my experience, most animals--even many fully grown animals, are perfectly happy to live with humans and be showered with affection, food, warm shelter, and they enjoy the company of humans once their trust is earned. The wild is a scary place to live that's filled with danger, and if you think about the actual lives of wild animals, they have to default to their wild instincts in order to survive. The life of a pigeon, for instance, is essentially "Eat--watch for predators, mate, and get back home to your shelter AS FAST AS POSSIBLE to avoid being FOOD." Same with squirrels. Pets are happy as long they are not prisoners and as long as the owner can accomidate their natural (and often destructive habits/instincts like chewing) the animal will probably have an extremely fulfilling life.

I've heard squirrels are WONDERFUL pets, and I know some rehabillitators who keep unreleasable ones (because it is illegal in most states to make pets out of them--CHECK YOUR STATE LAWS before purchasing one! Even flying squirrels are illegal in some places.) I think the biggest problem with keeping squirrels is giving them enough attention (they are demanding) having propper feed for them, and giving them space to run and chew without compromising your furniture. Flying squirrels are smaller and less destructive (so I've heard)but a grey squirrel can be allowed outside. I hear they will return ON THEIR OWN (however you would run the risk of it being eaten by a predator)

There are southern flying squirrels and northern flying squirrels, if you google these, you'll find some breeders hopefully near you. Sugar gliders are similar in appearance, by the way, but I hear their temperment is not always as sweet.

I hope that helps some.

One more comment for the anti-pet people out there--WHY is it legal to SHOOT a squirrel but ILLEGAL to give it a loving home? I own a pigeon who actually flies to his cage and goes inside to sleep of his own free will. The rabbits do the same--flying squirrels love their little man-made dens too..."Pet" shouldn't mean "prisoner."

IT IS ILLEGAL TO OWN A WILD ANIMAL SUCH AS A SQUERREL! I HAVE REPORTED ALL OF YOU TO THE POLICE THAT GAVE EVIDENCE YOU OWN ONE. YOU CAN GET LARGE FINES AND JAIL TIME!! THE POLICE ARE TAKING IT SERIOUSLY!

Laws vary from state to state, so it's important that anyone considering an exotic pet check their local laws first. In most states, it is illegal to own a naitive species. That is why you can legally purchase southern flying squirrels in petstores of states where they can legally be kept. It is illegal to own sugar gliders in California but perfectly legal to own one in Indiana, for instance.

i love squirrels i have two of them one red and the other is gray they get along very well and play together **** all yall haters man especillay chad the bitch

Can you tame a red squirrel?

That is, without capturing it as a baby. Lets say I just captured a red squirrel from the wild, full grown. Will I be able to tame it? If so, how do you recommend I do this?

I was thinking I could feed it by hand until it gets to know me. And just keep it in my room.

As for letting squirrel out around the house, is it tough to control their droppings?

I Have A Pet Squirrel. Her Name is Wolf. I Dont Keep Her Locked Up or Anything MEAN, I Take Her Outside And i Play With Her Alot. But She Constantly Needs Attention. She Chews On EVERYTHING. And She Grunts At Me When i try to pet her.

But sometimes she is Nice... i love her very much and i would never want to loose her.But she is not totally demestic... IF She Was Left outside for about a month, she would forget everything about being tame and she'd become wild.

She Always runs all over me and scratches me with her claws [Not On Purpose though].

Maybe putting a small tree or something in a large closed in patio would be fun for a pet squirrel

^.^

I Suggest Getting A Male, Females are so MEAN and AGGRESIVE.

And A Good Places to look for a pet squirrel is at AnimalMania Or Exotic Pets...

They are located in hollywood Florida.

[Animal mania has tons of different squirrels]

P.S: How is it "illegal" To have a pet squirrel if so many pet stores are selling them to be PETS?

Well... If You Do get a squirrel... Get A HUGE cage and give it lots of toys and attention.

They like apples :]
