red or gray squirrel

george (64.76.37.150) -

I am looking to buy a red or gray baby squirrel, if any one know's where I can buy one please email me back.

I found this site that sells red squirrels. Good luck

Read the post about racoons as pets.

These are wild animals and need to live in their natural environments and not a cage in your home.

George......are you mad? Why on earth would you want to cage a wild animal as a pet. I suggest you but a cat /dog or better still don't buy anything. You do not sound like the right person who should be keeping ANY pets.

Elaine or jimmy... either of you guys know where i can find baby rabbits to slaughter and cage? or how about some ferrits, why don't you people take your green peace crap, save the whales comments to yourselves. He said nothing remotly wrong.

So we can cage cows and chickens and pigs right? im sure u like tasty chicken on the grill dont you? or are you a salad shooter...

In any event, if you have nothing better to do, but nit pick somones comments on a site such as this, then you might be better off drowning yourself in a shallow mud puddle.

I know that sometimes the nature center in our area has small baby squirrels in April and May. They typically want people to take them and nurse them, but maybe they would allow you to adopt one? check and see if there is a center in your area.

Is he raising the squirrel for food?

I have to agree with Elaine and Jimmy, and its not Green Peace crap -- its thinking about what would make the animal happier.

so does anyone happen to know how much flying squirrels are???

Enjoy the squirrels in your backyard. Feed them. Treat them well. But they are not pets.

I really have to agree with these previous posts. Squirels or any wild animal for that matter do not make good pets. Leave them outdoors and enjoy them in their natural habitat. You can still enjoy them without caging them.

Yikes! Relax everyone! He was just asking! I wouldnt want to cage one myself because they are not domesticated. I have a hard time with ferrets as well because i think they are still to feral for my liking.

Ferret's too feral? Ferrets have been domesticated for thousands of years, even by the egyptians...and they make incredible pets if trained correctly and given enough attention. Squirrels also make awesome pets...my housemate has two southern flyers which are great. Red squirrels look fun but i hear they're big "chatter boxes" and grey's i'm just not sure of. They need ALOT of time and care as you need to get them young and have them on you constantly for a few weeks so they form a bond.

Go here and don't listen to these strange people ;-)

Nice words Nick. Ive been around a few ferrets and they all nip and bite unless they are handled all the time. To me that doesn't indicate a long history of domestication. I wouldnt recommend a ferret or a squirrel to a family.

I have a pet squirrel abd I would not recomend it. He is 2 years old now and although he was very nice when he was younger he is now he is not very nice. WHen he started to get mean I neutered him thinking that it would help but I was wrong. If I had to do it all over Again I would not have gotten him

Comment #14 Odie from the dog house -

You want a grey squirrel come over to my house and take your pick! I would be happy to get rid of them. They ate a hole the eave of our house and now they live in our attic. They are eating every thing. The chewed all wires in my xmas tree lights and I had to go and buy new ones!! Sorry to vent, but why in the world would you want a squirrel as a pet?

Comment #15 Sandy Hagopian (24.178.255.144) -

I raised a gray squirrel that was orphaned after a tree was cut down. Her eyes were not open yet. As soon as she was able to eat, I released her in my yard, making sure that she had a squirrel box to sleep in if necessary. I figured she would just run away. However, I have had a lot of enjoyment out of her. She is very territorial and protective of the property. I can go out to the yard and call her and she usually comes. I feed her nuts several times a day. At first she was very loving. I could actually pick her up and often petted her. Now she is wilder. She still jumps on my shoulder, takes a nut from my hand but sometimes growls or grabs at my hand with her front feet. I have never seen her with another squirrel and there are a few in our neighborhood. I myself would gladly raise other orphaned squirrels but I would never keep one caged. They do take a lot of a person's time but the end result is worth it.

What is your peoples problem????? yea i see why you can put up an argument about keeping them caged, but your talking like he plans on setting up a trap in his back yard, catching a squrril, then throwing it into a shoe box to live in until it dies!!! you would be surprised what makes good pets! you have to remember that all animals were wild at one point in time! you talk like having a racoon is a sin or somthing but im sure every one talking crap has a cat or dog or bird or somthing that was once a free animal!!! have any of you ever been to key west? the roosters and hens run free in the streets! so are you trying to tell me anybody who keeps a chicken as a pet is a horrable person???

now george... defintly go to www.ratkateers.com. they are awesome and very friendly. all their animals are hand raised. good luck!!!

i love squirrels. i hate people who say stuff like squirrels should be left outside. people can do what they want. so shut up you ****** squirrel haters

I think a squirrel is a great pet. Flying squirrels are very good pets, but you can only get them a few months out of the year. People that don't like us having them as pets need to leave, no one cares you don't want us having them.

Comment #29 Teresa Lyford (65.143.125.193) -

I have a grey pet squirrel, she is 7mon old, and she is a great pet, I found her when she was only about a wk old. She is very bonded to me and my hubby, we do not cage her, she has her own bed, she plays ball with us, gives us kisses, and constantly demands attention from us. she litterly thinks she is a dog, she gets along with our dogs and cat. I would never release her back outside, for the fact that I beleived once a wild animal is domesticated they wont be able to survive back in the wild, they dont know the dangers or how to protective themseleves.

i got my reds from my backyard. they came to my door as babys and they were orphaned. so i took them in and raised them. if i let them outside they come back in at least an hour!

Squirrels are so funny.i spent my day at the local park watching them.i would like to take care of one but i dont know where to get them from. And i dont want to go digging around the bushes cause ppl would think i was nuts and had lost my dog in the bushes or something.Maybe i will be lucky and find a baby this spring.

Hey Guys, I see that many of you have been asking where to find squirrels. I have 2 in my crockpot right now. They are wild animals and should be left outside. Period. If you want a pet I would recommend a cat or a dog. Keep the squirrels in the back yard. -Enjoy them feed them! Fatten them up! I always give them lots and lots of corn. They love it and it makes them good and fat! -it also slows them down a little! -yum

I am preparing to purchase a Red Squirrel myself. I agree that some animals should be left in the wild. But Animals purchased properly through a licensed breeder are breed to be pets. With all animals, you need to give them the attention they deserve. A domesticated squirrel can live a extremely happy life up to twelve or fourteen years. A wild squirrel has a life span of seven years. I see nothing wrong with having an exotic animal as a pet, as love as you give them a good home. If you find a baby animal abandoned, call your local animal shelter and ask them what step need to be taken to care for this animal. Plus you should check state and federal laws of which animals are allowed to be pets. Exotic pets will take a lot of work, but the rewards are worth the effort. I am a squirrel fan and I am also writing a book on having squirrels as pet. Good luck to those who endeavor to have a unique pet.

I love my pet squirrel, they are great little pets and thats that.

hey guys i have a baby squirrel rite now and he is a good pet...4 now. since he is a boy, when he goes through puberty, he will get mean so im gunna let him go. i suggest any1 who wants a squirrel, get a grl. they r supposed 2 b much nicer.

Comment #37 racquel from ok -

squirrels rarely make good pets... they love to chew.. and they have to chew to keep their teeth worn down. Squirrels need alot of room to run, jump and play. also, I dont know of many states where its legal to own a squirrel.

They get moody when caged for too long.

Never spay a squirrel.

I know of people neutering them but didnt seem to change their behavior.. some squirrels suffer some brain damage when they fall from the nest... and they would make a better pet.. check w/ your state laws.. and your local wildlife rehaber.

My son, who's a tree climber, has given a home to a baby squirrel who's tree was cut down and no mother. It is turning into a cute little pet and loves to eat peanut butter. He has a cage but roams loose a lot. Does anyone have a solution for pet droppings? Can they be trained in this area?

Clearly some people don't understand the concept of pets. All pets are wild animals. So to say that it it ignorant to keep squirrels makes no sense. It is no different than having a dog or cat as a pet. You cannot serioulsy think that just because they have been domesticated for the past four thousand years they are somehow are considered tamer than squirrels. That has not changed the genetic makeup of the animals. That has not changed the instincts of the animals, yet they make great pets. They are the same animals that previously lived in the wild.

Comment #40 dawn from paradise -

hi george, did you find what you were looking for

Ferrets are a TOTALLY domesticated species. They do not exist as wild animals. Endora you are clearly a moron and although you claim to have "been around a few ferrets" you are clearly too pig ignorant to have actually learned anything from the experience.

Maybe ferrets bite you because they hate you and your ferret bashing pet-nazi ways?

Comment #42 Big Dog from The Woods -

I think everyone would he happy to hear your views on Ferrets, but no one wants to hear you insult those with differing opinions.

George...seems your simple question turned into a debate! I just can't help but offer my opinion as well!

I've worked as an animal rehabillitator and in my experience, most animals--even many fully grown animals, are perfectly happy to live with humans and be showered with affection, food, warm shelter, and they enjoy the company of humans once their trust is earned. The wild is a scary place to live that's filled with danger, and if you think about the actual lives of wild animals, they have to default to their wild instincts in order to survive. The life of a pigeon, for instance, is essentially "Eat--watch for predators, mate, and get back home to your shelter AS FAST AS POSSIBLE to avoid being FOOD." Same with squirrels. Pets are happy as long they are not prisoners and as long as the owner can accomidate their natural (and often destructive habits/instincts like chewing) the animal will probably have an extremely fulfilling life.

I've heard squirrels are WONDERFUL pets, and I know some rehabillitators who keep unreleasable ones (because it is illegal in most states to make pets out of them--CHECK YOUR STATE LAWS before purchasing one! Even flying squirrels are illegal in some places.) I think the biggest problem with keeping squirrels is giving them enough attention (they are demanding) having propper feed for them, and giving them space to run and chew without compromising your furniture. Flying squirrels are smaller and less destructive (so I've heard)but a grey squirrel can be allowed outside. I hear they will return ON THEIR OWN (however you would run the risk of it being eaten by a predator)

There are southern flying squirrels and northern flying squirrels, if you google these, you'll find some breeders hopefully near you. Sugar gliders are similar in appearance, by the way, but I hear their temperment is not always as sweet.

I hope that helps some.

One more comment for the anti-pet people out there--WHY is it legal to SHOOT a squirrel but ILLEGAL to give it a loving home? I own a pigeon who actually flies to his cage and goes inside to sleep of his own free will. The rabbits do the same--flying squirrels love their little man-made dens too..."Pet" shouldn't mean "prisoner."

IT IS ILLEGAL TO OWN A WILD ANIMAL SUCH AS A SQUERREL! I HAVE REPORTED ALL OF YOU TO THE POLICE THAT GAVE EVIDENCE YOU OWN ONE. YOU CAN GET LARGE FINES AND JAIL TIME!! THE POLICE ARE TAKING IT SERIOUSLY!

Laws vary from state to state, so it's important that anyone considering an exotic pet check their local laws first. In most states, it is illegal to own a naitive species. That is why you can legally purchase southern flying squirrels in petstores of states where they can legally be kept. It is illegal to own sugar gliders in California but perfectly legal to own one in Indiana, for instance.

i love squirrels i have two of them one red and the other is gray they get along very well and play together **** all yall haters man especillay chad the bitch

Can you tame a red squirrel?

That is, without capturing it as a baby. Lets say I just captured a red squirrel from the wild, full grown. Will I be able to tame it? If so, how do you recommend I do this?

I was thinking I could feed it by hand until it gets to know me. And just keep it in my room.

As for letting squirrel out around the house, is it tough to control their droppings?

I Have A Pet Squirrel. Her Name is Wolf. I Dont Keep Her Locked Up or Anything MEAN, I Take Her Outside And i Play With Her Alot. But She Constantly Needs Attention. She Chews On EVERYTHING. And She Grunts At Me When i try to pet her.

But sometimes she is Nice... i love her very much and i would never want to loose her.But she is not totally demestic... IF She Was Left outside for about a month, she would forget everything about being tame and she'd become wild.

She Always runs all over me and scratches me with her claws [Not On Purpose though].

Maybe putting a small tree or something in a large closed in patio would be fun for a pet squirrel

^.^

I Suggest Getting A Male, Females are so MEAN and AGGRESIVE.

And A Good Places to look for a pet squirrel is at AnimalMania Or Exotic Pets...

They are located in hollywood Florida.

[Animal mania has tons of different squirrels]

P.S: How is it "illegal" To have a pet squirrel if so many pet stores are selling them to be PETS?

Well... If You Do get a squirrel... Get A HUGE cage and give it lots of toys and attention.

They like apples :]

WHAT DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND? IT IS ILLEGAL TO OWN A SQUERREL IN THE US. I HAVE REPORTED ALL OF YOU!!!

Good Luck

Comment #51 TheAnimalTrainer (71.92.147.114) -

I haven't read all of these posts. I stopped and couldn't read any more after the one about ferrets being feral. Just because an animal will nip does not mean it lacks domestication. Are chihuahuas feral?

Lack of training or improper handling with make ANY animal bite, domesticated or not. I have had ferrets for over ten years and I have taken notorious fear-biting ferrets and retrained them into loving affectionate pets. I have ferrets that NEVER bite, they do not chase feet, they give kisses and enjoy being petted.

They are also in a cage that I could fit in and get out to play for 3-4 hours a day. Ferrets require attention just like any other animal. If you stuffed a puppy in a kennel run and only took it out once a week throughout its life, how "tame" do you think that dog would be? Use your brains people.

Squirrels as pets - I am not against it depending on the method you used to get the squirrel and your intentions for it after you get it. Do your research - LOTS of research, contact people who have or have had squirrels as pets and ask a million questions about behavior and handling. Check all state and local laws regarding "wild animals" and look up costs for upkeep and proper nutrition.

Good Luck.

I have recently found an abandoned grey squirrel and have decided to raise it on my own because I'm getting the feeling that the rehabilitator here wants nothing to do with her. I have learned much on line but would love any input from someone who knows the ropes, if you know what I mean.

If anyone could point me in the right direction as to how to find out if she is legal in N.Y. as a pet(in the country) it would be greatly appreciated as well.

CHad Butll you are a dumb ass that does not know what you are talking about. it is not illegal to have a squirrel everywhere in the u.s. for one where i live if you by the squirrel from a breeder and have the papers for it you can have them. and yes i have talked to the state department of natural resources that is responsible for this so go off dumbass get the facts before you say something it is dumbass people like you that cause problems. hahahaha talk now.

Comment #59 Alicia from Ltown -

i just recently got a grey squirrel, and its not young, maybe a year, and im worried because its really agressive, i try talking soothingly to it and it helps, but if anyone has any ideas how to calm it down alittle let me know :)

thanksssssss, alicia.

Comment #60 Sunny Windingstad (71.236.50.65) -

FYI, all - ferrets are NOT totally domesticated, but they are endangered. There are small pockets of Black Footed Ferrets in the South Dakota area. They prey on Prairie Dogs....

To note, though, there are wild dogs, cats, rats, mice, rabbits, snakes, and on and on - does that mean that they shouldn't be pets??? It's personal. You decide what you do.

Comment #61 kentuckykitty from Bluegrass -

, Reptiles: Beware
Hey Alicia, what's the history on your little squirrel guy? Was it maybe mistreated before you got it, was it running free?

Last night while walking the fence, damn deer alwayse running through it- I found a trail in the snow.

At the end of it I found a verry wet and cold grey squirrel.

It fought hard for a few seconds and I just held it to my chest as I walked back to the house ignoreing the horses for a while.

Found a decent cage in my garage and that is now it's current home in my bedroom.

Last night is calmed down totally after it warmed up but today it's a bit touchy, but still allows me to touch it, pick it up though it doesn't like to be held.

I think it's male and verry fat.

Unshure if it's sick, last night it was unable to use it's rear legs (the wet/cold) but doing far better today and it ocasionally chitters at me and it's alwayse watching me.

I gave it the opertunity to bite me and it wouldn't and i'm afraid to put it back becuase i don't know where it came from and where it thinks it was going.

weather is clearing up, depending on how it's doing i might stick it to a tree in the area i found it in a couple days

and see what it does.

right now it will not eat or drink...

gave it bread, peanutbutter, water.

it ws sleeping in the bread this morning.

Just wanted to share this.

I wanted to get a pet squirrel but couldn't so I got a hamster. Lots of fun, he falls asleep on me sometimes. Don't give up on having a fun pet if you can't get a squirrel.

Comment #66 Fallofthewild.com (24.23.64.113) -

From an environmentalist's point of view, take all the damn squirrels you want. Or better yet, a chipmunk. I don't care. IN fact, keep a whole flock of starlings and house sparrows too!

But I am honestly considering getting a chipmunk, and trying that. Maybe I'm crazy, but I was thinking about catching one of the chipmunks that steal from my bird feeders. They will just get eaten by the niegbor's cat anyway.

Comment #67 prinzzess from SW Florida -

I have a pet squirrel, she was rescued before her eyes opened. shes full grown now and the best pet I've ever had, besides horses. I always wanted a squirrel but settled for chinchillas after I gave up on ever finding one, I still raise the chins but the squirrel gets my favoritism. I'll admit she has her fits where she'll run around and jump on you like hell is after her. I just put her in the cage and get her out and hour or so later after she calms down. usually shes very fun to play with although she likes certain people and not others it seems, she plays alot rougher with my fiance, and if shes eating wont let him near her, shes so cute and loves climbing in my closet ruining my fav outfits with her nails when ever I forget to close the door. she lives outside in a large cage but plays in the house when I"m home and shes calm. her nails are so sharp I have to wear a sweater when shes out, and when shes in one of her hyper moods I have to put her away because I'm afraid shell catch my eye when she jumps off a cabinet to me.

it is Legal to own a squirrel in FL. although I dont think its right to catch one in the wild and keep it. mine was a baby and has known nothing else, but that I'm her mommy who handfed her, so shes just as happy as any other regular pet, with the exception that shes the only one besides the dog who gets full run of the house. unlike rabbits or chins shes always easy to find and usually within 5 feet of me where ever I am. it is dificult to do somethings like be on the computer she is very jealous of my laptop because I try not to let her near it because she starts typing when she walks on it. last week she got a hold of it when I turned my back, I turned around to see her feelings about me keeping her away from the computer, she had one button in her mouth and 5 already off and more were flying as she was digging my buttons off like a dog digging up a bone. luckily they went back on. Now I hide the computer when shes out.

Squirrels are fun and great pets but do scratch and its not wirth it to cut thier nails as they grow so fast it had to be done weekly until I gave up and just started wearing the sweater and jeans. she also loved to bite but usually not hard, unless you are trying to take food from her, she has attacked a few hands for that, but alot of dogs do that as well though.

I would like to find someone in my area with a male to see if we can raise any babies, I'm in SW FL. if anyone knows of any links or websites for people with pet squirrels let me know.

hey i like animals and stuff i havent gotten a squirrel yet but when i researched i got the same **** i got when i was searching about my rescued starling ive resued several animals released some succsefully and the were all HAPPY. people who say they should be taking to a rehibilitator once or twice on their site makes sense most people will take it kill it and then say dont keep em they will never be happy well cant say that till youve raised one can you huh ive heard maybe 1 or 2 people say something other than good about starlings and squirels. point is if your smart enough to take care of em good thats 1 less hunter shooting em which is another thing if you eat what you kill than fine no problem dont offer me any but go ahead but the people who kill for fun, if i meet you then why not some recreational trigger finger cut offs.anyway thats it raised right they r good pets

Chad leave everyone alone just do us all a favor and keap your lame comments to yourself BTW, If you people are interested in squirrles go Google sugar gliders you can learn everything about them and where you can by them. A sugar glider is like a domestocated flying squirrle. One more thing, if you don't have anything positive to say about ferrets you obviosly don't know much about ferrets so we don't want hear you.

Well, as of around 3 pm today, I am the parent of 3 8-10 day old gray squirrels that were blown out of a tree. I waited several hours for the mom to return, but no good. The wind was nearly blowing the nest away, which is unreal wind for around here, SC. I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to do with them when they grow up, maybe keep one, release the others, or give them to a local educational center that I used to work with. Although, they do taste good as I well know...hmmmm...nah, couldn't do it after the work of raising them. I've raised a litter of pups from around the same age, so I know I'm in for a blast.

And for the folks with the nonsense about wild animals belonging outside, non-domesticated, etc. Where do you think YOUR ancestors lived for a couple thousand years at the least, more than likely a couple million? Yeah, yours weren't always inside either, and neither was your Yorky Foo FOos, or Buttons'. Domestication starts with "wild" animals, and it is a mutually favorable relationship in many cases. As much as you think those little critters are just LOVVVVVINg allll that freedom, YOU have been stuck in your warm little house along with your ancestors for far too long to remember what it was like to only be alive long enough for the next meal. When it comes down to it, I dont care one way or the other, but be rational for Pete's sake, and be somewhat educated.

Also, in response to what I keep seeing on the net, theres no Federal ban on keeping wild animals. Endangered species regulations & laws restricting research on animals come closest. Most laws on wildlife are state oriented. In SC, keeping a squirrel, or many wild animals not considered endangered=100% legal. I have for education & as pets. Ive seen "illegal to possess wild animal" statements everywhere. They appear to be attempts to dissuade people from keeping animals which is understandable but using false information is only going to hurt those efforts. Be careful about keeping wild animals but it isnt federally illegal.

Jake, I have a female squirrel, I love her to death, and would like to find her a mate, shes the best thing that ever happened to me and I'd like more of them around. would you consider letting me adopt one or sell one to me? mine fell out of a tree before her eyes opened, she loves me to death. but yeah feeding is a bitch especially the forst few months and they drink milk for 6 months.

I own a squirrel I found her when she was only four weeks old, she was kicked from the nest, although I had every intention of releasing her from the beginning, once she started to walk I realized she would never be released, she was kicked from the nest because she has a deformity in her back legs, causing her to run ackward. I keep her in a cage and she loves it, yes there are alot of extra responsibilites with a squirrel than there is a cat or dog but a wild squirrel has a life expectancy of 1 year in the wild, in capitivy its 20 years. So not only have I given this squirrel a much longer life, but I gave it a life altogether, she would have been dead at 4 weeks old. So the fact that my squirrel loves her cage (although large and expensive) and the fact that a squirrel can live a happy, much easier and longer life, to me it's fine to have a pet squirrel as long as you know what ur getting into and take on the responsibilty.

When deciding to be the owner of a squirrel take into consideration the fact that a squirrel is crazy, they run all over the place. There nails get sharper than a cats they need them to climb, we wear squirrel protection (sweat suits) when holding my squirrel. Also a big consideration most vetinarians will not attend a squirrel and if they do it's expensive. Also make sure you have time to handle the squirrel everyday so that the squirrel acts like pet. If you don't have the patience, money, or time for these things then a squirrel is not for you.

I have a grey squirrel. I think it's a female. I can't be sure though. I thought that I had a mout problem and I bought a sticky mouse trap. when I woke up the next day thinking I got a mouse I went into the kitchen and would you look at this huge thing. She thrashed and thrashed, and unfortunately by the time I got to her, she lost a foot. Now I can't put her back in the wild. I contacted the wildlife rehabbers in my areah, and they said "Hypothetically" of course that the animal would just be put to death if it could not be rehabilitated. So I have only had her for a couple days now. I have no ideah how to handle this I gave her some watered down crushed sleeping medicine so I could get her off the trap, and I did my best to bandage up her leg. (I'm a nurse by profession luckily) and I put her in a cage but she thrashes, and she's absolutley ferral, so I can't get anywhere near her to change her dressings. Also in my research on them, I learned that their mating season was during the fall. How do I know if she's preg. or not? I don't want her to die, so if anyone knows how I may be able to get her calm (Domestic enoug) to just not worry about her attacking me, that would be a big help.

I have a wonderful pet. He is a 9 month old eastern gray tree squirel. His name is Pippin. over the summer I rescued 7 gray squirrel orphans (3 were siblings). One passed away from unexplained conditions, but the others have done very well. I released 5 of them in November when they were about 5 months old and they all doing great! Pippin we decided to keep because he was so bonded to us. He has a very large cage but spends much time free in the house. He gets along great with our dog who has learned NOT to chase squirrels. He is a great little guy. My kids (12 & 8) tell all their friends that 'mom' loves her squirrel like one of her children - that;s not far from the truth. Squirrels make really wonderful pets - but they are not for everyone and are illigal in many states, Fortunally, we live in Florida where it is perfectly legal and I have come to know quite a few squirrel owners locally. If you truly want to care for and keep a squirrel I suggest you contact a rehabilitaor as I did. I was taught so much about the furry guys and was much better prepared for the enormous commitment they require. I LOVE SQUIRRELS!!!

You will just have to wear heavy gloves to change the bandage. Watch how well she moves around they usually will do fine wild with only one limb missing. You can set her free once well, if that's the only problem.

Comment #81 rascal squirrel from rescue house -

I have rescued a tree squirrel hit by a car going at least 40MPH. He appeared dead with lots of blood coming from mouth. I wrapped him in a sweater and when got home I put him in a crate with warming blanked. Abt 5 hrs later he began moving around. I have been treating its mouth with antiseptic and giving antibiotics. He is now missing both his top front teeth and can't eat. I have been orally giving him cooked grains and cat food (and water)put through the blender through surenge. He is not difficult to handle, I think because of the extent of injury. This is now day three and he is able scoot around, sleeps alot, but have the abrasions and cuts being treated well and he is doing better. I am hopeful to release him (he's an adult-have no idea the age), but need help to know how long for the top front teeth to grow back? Do I need to file the bottom teeth? No rescue/nature centers would take him. I think he will be fine if I can keep him ok till heals and teeth grow back so can eat. Any knowledgable help appreciated.

I have raised gray squirrels, several times, they have TONS of energy, though they are very easy to tame. Hell, even the squirrels in your back yard are easy to tame; eat from your hands, follow you (even into your home), and communicative. They are fairly intelligent, though their exploring and curious behavior leads them into trouble - quite often. If decisions were never made to domesticate anything - ever - we would not have dogs, or cats, or fish, or mice, rats, parrots, etc... Squirrels are happy if they are not starving, if they are not tormented, and if they were not captured as adults to be caged. BUT if you have the access to a baby, and raise it well, it will have as long and happy of a life as any pet rat, though twice as cute, and more mischievous. GOOD LUCK!

We live on the outskirts of a small town, have 2 acres behind us, and neighbors who are just a few steps away. We see squirrels all the time outside, but never attempt to get close to them, since we also have 8 cats.

But tonight, when my husband was outside redding up the breezeway, he heard a rustling noise from a pile of leaves behind a chair. Upon closer inspection he found it to be a small, young gray squirrel. Not wishing to see it hanging from the mouth of one of my cats tomorrow, he took it over into the neighbor's back yard and left it go, but it followed my husband right back. It won't leave and it is as tame as if we hand-raised it. It is crawling up his leg, and follows him everywhere he goes. We fed it bread which it gobbled up like it was starving. We don't know what to do with it. My cats go out every am, and are constantly hunting. Every day, they bring a mouse, a mole, etc., to the house. I love my cats, and although they are only doing what God intended for them to do, I cannot bear to think of them killing this precious baby.

Right now it is happily snuggled inside of a bird house placed n the porch floor outside. I don't know if it is male or female, but it is very friendly. It must be an orphan, since I do not see a worried mother anywhere nor brothers & sisters.

Any nice, caring suggestions for what to do with it? Really can't keep it safely in this area. We live near Ellwood City which is about 45 min. from Pittsburgh, Pa. Does anyone know of a nature place near us that would take it? Or a nice, goodhearted person who would give it a loving, longterm home. No a..hole comments please about squirrel meals, etc. This is just a baby man!

wow. its amazing how much conflict there is on this page over a simple question. try www.brighten farms.com they have clean well cared for hand fed exotics ranging from squirrels, skunks, opossums, foxes, chipmunks, coons, duprasis, woodchucks, chincillas, even coyote pups as well as various cages and accessories to make your new friend feel at home. they will give you information to make sure that a baby squirrel or whatever exotic you are thinking of caring for is what you really want aswell. but i will warn you now if you ever tire of your pet. its against the law to just set them free. its considered cruel to set free a technically domestic animal that cant fend for itself. i hope this helps. good luck on your new furry friend!

I have a 4 month old fox squirrel we named Boris who is the best pet I've ever had. I'm a veterinary nurse and another nurse found him while walking around our vet clinic one day after a storm. He was one of four babies, the other three already dead, and Boris was clinging to life. I warmed him, gave him a drop of Karo syrup and a little water, took him home, did a lot of research and did it right, and have now raised a healthy, happy little boy, a whole pound of attitude! He is the joy of my and my husband's lives and lives quite happily amongst our two dastardly dachshunds, a sweet little house kitty and a parakeet. Boris has a huge cage with hammocks and tunnels and shelves and ladders to keep him busy, along with large-diameter oak branches to climb and gnaw and tiny stuffed animals to fight, cuddle and toss around, which is the cutest thing. I didn't think anything could ever be so cute and affectionate as this little squirrel. He has deepened our appreciation for life in general. I LOVE BORIS AND ALL SQUIRRELS!

I want to add that Boris spends a LOT of time out of his cage. His favorite thing is to jump around on the floor with a towel -- he rolls around on it, runs around it and jumps on top of it over and over. I'll throw it over his head and he jumps around like a little ghost, then pops his head out practically laughing, like, "let's do it again, mama!". No kidding, you can see the joy on his face. My boy would not be happy if he were confined to his cage all the time. He doesn't hesitate to let me know it, either. When he is out, I have to walk around wearing protective clothing and leather fingerless gloves to protect my arms, hands, and legs, mainly because his nails rip tender skin and not so much for biting. He's my little ball of joy, my little baby skwerl. I LOVE BORIS AND I LOVE SQUIRRELS!

Ok, quit with the PETA and Green Peace crap, guys. He is looking for a breeder -- which means it is the same as if he were looking for a dog breeder. He is not looking for someone who caught a wild squirrel to sell, hes looking for someone that sells squirrels that are bred and raised domesticated, for generations.

I become foster mom to a baby grey squirrel who was less than a few days old. I work in a vet clinic and someone brought her in because she was in a cats mouth. She had puncture wounds and pneumonia. I have had her for 2 weeks now. She was only a few days old when I got her and about the size of my thumb. I want to keep her as a pet as long as she would be happy. I have raised baby wild bunnies and after a few weeks they became frightened of me so I let them go.

I have mixed feelings about keeping wild animals as pets. I would never go capture a wild adult animal that had grown up in the wild...but when a baby is brought to you and you have to care for it and raise it to then turn it loose and say 'good luck' could be seen as kind of cruel in my opinion. Unless they are truly wild. You can just kind of tell when they want to be wild. If I have to choose between keeping a baby squirrel as a pet or killing it because it will not be releasable as it's too attached to humans I would choose to keep it. As long as the animals quality of life is improved I say go for it!!!!
