I am in the middle of researching purchasing a lemur for educational purposes. I raise other exotics and take them to the schools to educate humans to the the issues with some of our worlds greatest assets and our resposibilities to protect them from human's progress. Long winded, my appologies. My boyfriend and I have talked about adding a male lemur (it has to be a male) to our program, something a little more managable than a monkey but something kids will recognize (thanks to the movie Madagascar). I am aware of the species status on the endangered list, hence my choice, and I do understand the care they require (I'm a biology major who worked in the veterinary industry and the feed industry for 10). I would just like to be put in touch with Domestic breeders of lemurs (domestic being with in the United States). Please feel free to e-mail me. Thank you.

These animals should not be given to just anybody. They need careful care and need very SPECIFIC conditions and needs, not just a house in a bed and the couch. So please for the sake of these animals being tortured and eventually killed so they could show it to their friends, get caught and probably the seller will get arrested- do not sell anything to these ppl that can barely take care of a chihuahua. I believe in selling/giving ppl these rare animals but to the right one for the sake of the animals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh yeah and you should make sure to have a proper vet that would help you in these emergencies..and you don't wich proves you can't handle that poor tortured sick animal!!!!!!

I have my lemur, pepe le puie, now for 6 years...he has 4 pals; my 11 yr old, two toy shih tzu's, and a toy poodle. Pepe is a part of the family and i am sure wants no part of a zoo. I will admit that in the beginning when we first got him he was a crazy fool! But he made us laugh so much...he is a comedien and loves to make us laugh. We treat him as though he is our child. He is obedient and well behaved now. It just takes time. He holds our faces and gives us kisses every day before we leave the house. He comes and wakes us when he needs to pottie...its not impossible to pottie train them. He loves to dance and shake is little bootie. He can change the chanels on the TV. He loves kicking it and watching a movie. His baddest habits are the fact that he loves paper...he will pretend to be reading the letter...as soon as you turn your head, hes shreading it and eating it! He also has a fascination with dryers...he know when its laundry time...he wants to go in the dryer with the clothes, so he sits in there and will not make a sound as you toss wet clothes in there. He wants to go for the ride!

"Bust it baby MASTA"... what a name.. and while you shout at people who disaprove of having lemours you could learn some grammer. I neither disaprove or aprove- if you have read some of my wild animal posts you will understand. Since these are indangered animals, if you give them a loving home that is suitable and help keep their instincts intact(you know... not treating them like a normal housepet and hand feeding them, making everything extremely easy for them, ect. ect. Like doing reasearch on wild lemours and try to make it more challenging and more like the wild for your lemour) then I have no objection. I don't like that they were domesticated in the first place (if you want to keep the species alive why not get a bloodey nature preserve and save some trees while your at it??) but since it's too late they might as well get adopted and taken care of. Now- if you want one for other reasons then wildlife preservation then you're not a very nice person. I do not think it's a good thing that they should be locked up in a cage because 'they're cool' or they're 'adorable'. They shouldn't be in a bloodey cage in the first place. They should be treated as wild animals to preserve their instincts. I am sorry I can offer no advice to this man who wishes for vetrinary help; I can only offer critisism mixed with praise. It was compeletley idiotic for him to get a lemour without having knoweledge of a vet or zoo that could help him should he get in trouble(which he did) before he purchased the lemour. But trying to straighten things out earned him back half a point in my book.

As to zoos:

I am outraged at some of your opinion of zoos. Now, there are SOME zoos that are horrid, but I personally grew up around a zoo that treats its animals like royalty. They aren't even in cages; they are in large incloseres(sorry for my lack of spelling talent) that mirror their naterual habitat. The zoo keepers are EVERYWHERE constantly caring for the animals, and I have SEEN the animals get unbelivably good care. They get food that is incredibly nutriousus, enough space to move about and exersize, the space they need, the privacy they need(in the inclosers are places where they can ecscape the veiw of the human onlookers), proper treatment that mantains their instincts, and more. How do I know this? you ask. Well- I have been going to the zoo my WHOLE LIFE, ever since I was a newborn. I was born in the same NEIGHBORHOOD as the zoo. And I've seen tours, visited the animals, talked to the zookeepers, the lot. The crowd is actually quite pleasent and quiet. And if anyone taunts or screams at the animals they get thrown out. If the lemour owner's zoo was like the one I am bonded with, I don't see the problem in giving the lemour to the zoo. I remember my zoo used to have lemours and I, a huge lemour fan, visited them often and they were incredibly happy. Sadly, the lemour exebit left for unknown reasons( I think they sold the lemours to another zoo).

Hi I'm interested in purchasing a lemur. How do I go about doing this? I currently live in New Zealand but am willing to move should this become a problem.

WHY would ANYONE want to go to a black market? Suppose if a police officer came to your house or the vet inquired where you lemour is from. Yeah- they'd love to hear you purchased it from an illeagle trade.
