People who think lemurs dont make good pets dont know what they are talking about they need to shut there face if they have never owned one who seen them in person!!!!

OK people, I have never personally kept a lemur, but my uncle has, and so I'm going to give you his advice.

1. First, check on the internet for info. Some will be rubbish, but there are also sites filled with suggestions, and they can tell you where to buy books on lemur care (yes, such books exist).

2. Check that you know where an exotic vet is - that is, a vet that knows how to treat animals like lemurs. Ask some zoos who treats their lemurs.

3. Check on exotic pet shop sites. Quite a few can sell lemurs and things like that. But try to find breeders as well, cause then you can see the parents of your lemur.

4. Check with your local council that yourlemur is legal! You don't want to wind up in court cause you didn't check.

5. Make sure it has plenty of room to play in. Miaka (my uncle's lemur) loved toys that encouraged her to think (like balls with treats inside them). Ask lemur owners how their lemur's enclosure is designed.

6. If you have cats or dogs, then make sure that the cage is proof against them - and of course, the lemur.

7. Check on all of the lemur prices, but make sure that when you choose your lemur, you choose it for more than the amount of cash it costs.

8. Be gentle with it for the first few days. It will be frightened for a bit, but it'll calm down with regular handling. But give it space!

9. Well, that's all I can think of. Buckle up, because, as my uncle said, lemur keeping is one hell of a wild ride!

Hey, I live in Northern Arkansas, and would someone please email a place that sells Lemurs? And a place where I could get information on care?.....

and as for those who don't agree with having lemurs as pets....okay, have your opinion....and let those of us who want or already have animals have our opinion. The world is still spinning, so there's no reason to get mad

Comment #33 Bust it Baby MASTA (162.84.237.152) -

Im only gana say this once aliight all of you shut the **** up first and listen to thisi. This is about people who wants information to get lemurs but some of you just say "NO NO Lemurs belong in the Wild or please please send them to the zoo" Damn it they get eaten in the wild and caged harmfully in a zoo. I admit having a zoo is good under certain exceptions but we all know we want a lemur who doesn't. They're practiclly famous . Ever heard of madadasgar every wants a lemur these day so how about u just tell us where to buy a lemur and shut up k. You can say what you want about your ass opinon anywhere else but not here. We want Lemurs am i right everyone. COMMON SENSE IDIOTS theres even a book about it so read it.

Also using the precedent from the Brandeburg case look it up

Some people might be killed or hurt.

My right to free speech i cannot be reported OR I WILL SUE AND BRING IT UP TO DA SUPREME COURT

PEACE OUT DAMNED FACINIST

Can someone please tell me where I can buy a lemur? I've always wanted a pet, but animals as big as dogs or bigger aren't allowed where I live, and my mother is allergic to cats. My Email is BashiYami (at) aim . com (just without the spaces) Thanks!!

Sorry i disagree.... I have two lemur incaged only from 8am thru 2pm and free to roam the home the rest of the time. Yes this is an edangered species however that has nothing to do with having them as pets. Lemurs in captivity must not had such a misrable life as you guys like to depict because they live longer in captivity. Housing much meet there needs however that i firmly belive mine have a cage built around a tree so climbing in not an issue.MIKE what type of infection does he have????

I wanna buy a lemur, where can I find them? I live in Spain...

Ok guys, Lemur care is something to be taken seriously, they aren't just casual pets you can keep around your home. Usually from an exotic pet dealer, they can cost anywhere from 1, 000-5, 000 dollars, and that doesn't even include an enclosure or vet care....

Think hard about whether you have the finances to keep a lemur.

Comment #42 Darren McAllister (81.132.45.229) -

Lemurs are lovely animals, I have seen different situations where lemurs are kept, and I know lemurs can be kept in a very happy enviroment, as long as they are treated properly they can be fantastic pets. There are arguments on both sides for exotics pets kept in a home, but loved and looked after goes a long way.

Comment #43 Lisa-AnimalProtector from Ohio, The safe place. -

People, she was just asking if she should take it to the vet or the zoo. Person, I'm dissapointed you don't have a vet yet- how did your lemurs get it's shots? Well nevermind that, if you don't have one yet, you need to find yourself an exotic pet vet. Don't take it to the zoo- they actually don't know what they're doing, even if they act like they do. ;]

(And I only did read the first couple responses, so, sorry if someone said this already)

I work at a vet clinic as a tech. We do some exotic work. (a few monkeys, a coatimundi or two, and now a lemur) I have strong feelings about exotics as pets. IT IS WRONG!! I have yet to meet an exotic pet owner who is able to properly care for them. The owners want us to remove teeth and claws so that THEY won't get hurt. They give not one minute of thought to the well-fare of their "beloved" pet. The average person hasn't the ability or knowledge to care for these creatures! It isn't fair to the animals they have a miserable, frustrating existence. These so-called 'loving homes' are worse prisons than any zoo. They choose these wild animals, not for love of the animals, but because they want to be different! If they loved these creatures they'd leave them to professionals to care for. At least the professionals try to provide the animals with what they need and are not using the creatures to stoke their own egos.

Mark.... I couldn't agree with you more. People are hypocrits and it is seriously upsetting that Zoo's are basically where slaved pets are. Its sad.

Lemurs are Awesome. Who is gonna mess with a guy who has a Lemur on his back...nobody. If got crazy I would unleash the spirit of the night on the antagonist. Go to Madagascar.
