I caught a red fox in my bear trap and it broke its leg what should i do?
Call some kind of wildlife control service and have them take it away. They'll probably euthanize it. Or, if you live in the type of place where its okay, just shoot the poor thing yourself. And stop trying to catch bears.
I heard the police had to catch some bears that were up a tree in a residential neighborhood... make Joe is honkering for a spot in the department. Why do we feel so compelled to mess with wildlife?
Because we think we're better than them.I forsee a time - a horrible time - when all creatures are locked up in zoos and humans have spread apartment complexes over the face of the earth.
We are "better" (smarter) than them, anyway. Do you see the foxes and other wild animals hudding in forums conspiring against humans?
I don't see foxes overtaking the world - mankind is far to predatory to let that happen. Now, insects maybe. I can see the validity of movies like the B films on ants and frogs and spiders where they overtake the world. Why? They are organized forces, and humans have far too much independence to fight a large scale war against an organized force.
Ugh it sounds horrible but i would just finish it off. I couldnt handle the medical bills if i took it to the vet.
Comment #7 QTPie from the rainforest -
I would call the vet and ask if there is a local wildlife center nearby. If you can't find one yourself they'll know where to find one. And the rest of you, if he's trapping bears there has to be a good reason... Either he likes to eat them (they are a lil greasy for my taste) or they are doing damage and maybe they have refused to be relocated. I agree that man is encroaching on the area that wildlife has left, but that doesn't mean that a menace cannot be dealt with. I have 3 rules where wildlife is concerned. 1) If it's hurt and in pain and it can be fixed then fix it. If it can't be fixed then put it out of it's misery. 2)Don't kill it unless you;re going to eat it or it's going to eat you. and 3) if it's destrying your home or hunting your pets then get it out of there in the least harmful manner that works. So far I didnt hear anything that would have broken any of those rules, and I'm not going to pass judgement.
If you really want to get it out of that trap, take a forked stick and hold it's head down while someone releases the trap. I've been trapping before and you're just better off to shot it. It's all part of trapping if you don't like it when some cute lil' animal gets caught in your trap, then stop trapping!!!!

you s you self concieted s lalalala is it sure huntings a sport it's also nessacerry for food and the environment think about this if human predators were eliminated animal numbers would increase in a drastic and unhealthy way the animals exahaust thier food sorce eventually causing famine and killing out thier species as well as several others if you want to protest anything try thinking out pros and cons!

Comment #18 racquel from ok -
vets are not allowed to actually charge you for a wild animal you bring in.I know the original post is old.. so this probably makes no difference.. but... call ur local wildlife rehabilitator.. they do not get charged for taking wildlife to the vet.. or they may.. but get a reasonable discount.. some rehabbers can even fix the break. Just depends.
Some of you guys need to get your heads checked. Bear trapping is perfectly legal with a permit, and no one should push their ethics onto someone else.As for the fox in the trap, I know it's a bit late, but for future ref. You should call wildlife, or contact a vet immediately. More then likely the leg cannot be saved. If it can, great, don't try to domesticate him if you are going to release him back in the wild. The less you touch him the better. If it cannot be saved, the fox has two options. One putting him down, or two if he has the temperament to become a wildlife example/teaching animal. You could have the leg amputated, but I believe wildlife dept., or game & fish dept. has to make that decision.
Owning foxes are illegal. I have reported all of you to the police that gave evidence that you want one. The police are taking this very seriously. Foxes to not deserve to be pets. leave them alone and get a dog or something legal. The lady who put up your phone number, you are introuble!

Wow. Some of you really should look more into things before you open your mouth. There are strict regulations against them in some states for foxes, wolfdogs, etc, but in others it's perfectly legul and a few others require a permit. For example fennec foxes are legul in most states, but should only be purchased with SERIOUS intentions and FULL knowledge of the exotic you are interested in. Not everyone wants an exotic just for something diffrent, some people have a deep love and compassion for them. I'm not promoting keeping WILD animals, nor exotic imports taken as babies from their nest. I'm talking about reputable breedes of many generations of DOMESTICATED exotics. Dogs were no more tame once than wild wolves are now, so saying just get a cat or dog is one of the most un-thought-through comment about owning animals once could utter. So please, educate yourself before you speak. If you don't I'm afraid some people might belive you, and no good can come of that. And fox lover, I hope you follow your dreams about speaking out and helping animals, it's a shame more people don't have a mind set like yours. If you have a serious intrest in working with animals, you could look into wildlife rehabilitation, I'm sure you could locate a rehabber in your area who would be willing to train you, and you could not only be around alot of animals, you'd be helping to save their lives. = )
What’s wrong with you people?Yes, you can own a fox as a pet, all you will need is an exotic pet permit from your local city or county, which ever applies to your location. Note though, a fox is worse than a pet cat as they tend to claw just about everything in your house! And they love to dig, so say goodbye to your carpets! Also, many don’t know, but Foxes have sent glands and can often smell worse than a skunk! Second, Bear trapping is a VERY legal way to hunt and/or harvest fur. They do taste very good, much like pork, and yes are a little greasy. My two cents.
CHad Butll you are a moron. wtf would the police go chasing after someone who made a in post online about owning a fox when there are worse crimes going down on the streets. and FYI cockshiner, you can own a fox, you just need a permit. I had an uncle that owned a frickin mountain lion once, so educate your pea-sized brain before you go making threats next time. oh and if you want you can "report" this too. ROTFLMAO!!!!
Comment #34 Ellie Spenelli from California -
I think you should definatly take it to the vetand all you douche bags that think hunting is a bad thing, its natural and legal its one thing if you kill an animal and waste the meat but im sure joe has some good reason why he hunts bears Lalala go to hell...... treehugger Meat Eater :)
Comment #35 Kathy from Millbury MA -
Message to lalala - NO NEED TO USE BAD LANGUAGE...be polite, thoughtful, and learn a little about Wildlife and Conservation before being RUDE.....
Comment #36 Kathy from Millbury MA -
TO FOX LOVER - you use the SAME LANGUAGE (disgusting) as lalala... a disguise or friend, perhaps. It seems when people DO NOT understand anything about Wildlife/Conservation (& the real way the World/Earth works), you resort to PROFANITY and Stupidity. Don't be NASTY because you are frustrated, TRY TO LEARN - then it would worth having a meaningful & informative conversation with YOU.
Seriously, nobody really wants a fox as a pet. What are you going for? The look? The behavior patterns? Foxes smell just like skunks, only not quite as strong. You can't have the scent glands removed because they're attached to major arteries and it almost always kills the fox. They cache food and items. They are nocturnal. They get into EVERYTHING. This may come a shock to some people, but wild animals are meant to be in the wild. The Russians have dedicated almost 50 years to domesticating the Silver Fox. They're just now completing the project. All this taken into consideration, why would you want to own a fox? It's illegal in many places. Just get a dog. The instincts have been bred into the foxes for millenniums, there's no way you're going to get rid of the undesired characteristics of a fox in a few months... or lifetimes for that matter.
i saved a baby fox that was trapped by gov. trapper, her leg was broken but i took her home used a herb called comfree it heals bones and i called someone who had a permit for wild animals and now shes safe in a good enviornment where people arent trying to SHOOT her...people are moving into there homes so its our responsibility to make a safe place for them to be. ps fox have a gland in there tail that lets out strong urine so they can mark there turf so they would not make a good pet! trust me from experience.

Comment #42 BE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR ACTIONS! (67.170.9.237) -
You are all nuts!!Take responsibility for your stupid actions and drop the fox off at a vet's office who you know can take care of wild animals. Shame on you for setting a trap that would break and animal's leg! Don't you know that most animal traps catch things that are not intended to be caught in the trap? You should have planned for this ahead of time so you would know what to do instead of writing your thoughts on a blog on some random website and waiting for people to tell you what to do while the fox YOU caught is suffering because of your actions. By the way, to all of you who think killing an animal that you intentionally harmed is the right thing to do; a broken fox leg can heal. DO NOT KEEP IT AS A PET! Foxes as pets is a bad idea. They really smell bad and mark and dig EVERYTHING (even females). And, yes... they are wild animals.
Wow, Some of you people have your views extremely skewed. I personally do not agree with trapping, or hunting but what other people do is they're own business. I mean if I dont like something I just don't do it. If I see or hear about someone doing it "legally" mind you, I dont care cause that was THEY'RE choice. Who am i to say dont do that cause I dont like it. the whole point here is live and let live. if your a hunter more power to you. If your a person that wouldnt hurt a fly way to go. Just dont try to say that one is wrong and you are right. Hunting has been done way long before anyone thats alive right now was born. So good luck stopping it just accept that it happens and if you dont like it, JUST DONT IT.
you guys need to think outside the box...what if the guy had dogs and he had problems with bears going on his property and killing his dogs... thats just an example... there is plenty of other animals that need to be protected from bears... not his fault. at least he cared enough to ask you people what he should do.
i think the problem you are faced with is not such a big problem as you may seem. as many of these kind observers have said jus t put it out of its misery. a blunt instrument should do. if you have nothing at hand . ready one of your old shoes , one without holes pour cold water in to your shoe ( high heels are good for this task) place it in the frezzer. i know this will take some time so administrate some sleeping tablets to the beast or cloride if at hand . once your shoe is ready . raise up high and strike down hard to the temple area of the fox. estimated strikes 24 some i have eliminated in under 20 that was a size 8 . she was a big lady. once you have killed the fox humainly . ready the oven gas mark 4. ready a pie dish . cut up meat in to roughly 1 inch cubes marinade in a vodka and lime dressing .mmmm foxy pye to acompany such a dish i would recomend some roughly cut veg sourced from your niegbours garden! and some good old chips with a chicken stock gravy. there you have it foxy pye delicous humain and cost effective
Comment #46 Loki (216.164.58.139) -
That's amazing pye, you are an incredible jerk.If humans have not noticed in the past millennium, animals have lived amongst us while we encroach the territory that their familial generations lived. We as humans are incredibly destructive tearing down forests and using up resources like it's water...oh wait that's going to be gone soon too right? I'm not a tree hugger but I have noticed a significant change in air quality and the amount of pollution on our planet. Hunting for sheer fun is awful, and considering that we have domesticated animals for food such as chickens and cows should mean that we don't have a necessity to hunt for our food, we go to the grocery store. The poor fox you captured in your trap was another example of how reckless you are, what you should do is not place traps out, if there is a bear on your property then call a professional animal control to have it relocated to a different area. If you are setting up traps for personal gain (i.e. fur, meat, etc) you don't need it, it's a waste of time and energy. It's good that you asked what to do with the fox you caught but the logical solution would be to call a local wildlife rehabilitator who would know better the anatomy and the amount of damage done to the leg and whether or not it was repairable, and if it wasn't then to humanely euthanize without pain (as compared to beating it with a shoe like pye...idiot). The great thing about an environment that when it isn't taken over by humans in an overbearing way it takes care of itself. Everything fits together like a puzzle, an equal ratio of prey to predators works out. Predators that are dwindled in numbers lead to overcrowded populations of prey which ruins the balance and humans in our stupidity keep killing off the predators which leads us to then hunt the prey to even the overcrowded population. Seems easy right? Stop killing and tearing down forests and natural habitats, and most of all STOP BREEDING STUPID PEOPLE OKAY? Keeping an exotic animal that was raised in human environments from birth is ok to have as a pet, animals taken out of their environment and brought into captivity is wrong. I know there are reputable breeders of foxes in the United States please do research on the animal, I know it looks freaking awesome but they do have natural wild instincts and could turn on you in a moments notice. If you want a cute cuddly exotic animal then go for a chinchilla or a sugar glider where there is enough information known about it's behavior and diet to keep as a wonderful pet. Foxes are hyper active, can bite/be aggressive, are known to consistently dig where ever they see fit (can dig over 20 feet in a night), and have an odor. A normal diet for a fox consists of fruits, vegetables, some high protein good quality dog food (good quality food costs over $16 per bag per 15 lbs) and of course insects like mealworms, waxworms, superworms, etc. Think about these things before you decide to get a fox, they are also illegal in SOME states, not all, check with your local wildlife conservatory about this. They cannot be trained like a dog and it could take months even more than a year to get the animal to respond to you in a consistent manner. You HAVE to do your research, if you don't and you go out and buy the animal only to find out that it was too much for you to handle then you just wasted your money and the animal will have to find another home and it's cruel. Please don't be stupid.

If your a real trapper then you have your trapping .22. Just shoot it and save the hide. They were bringing about $23.00 at the fur auctions. You sound slightly inexperienced, so make sure you don't split the hide down the belly (like I used to do), the hide is fairly worthless then. If you in a rural area killing the fox will be a favor for the locals. Don't listen to the yankee city folk, country living is a little different. Farmers around Virginia pay trappers to catch fox to save the turkey and chicken farms around here so those ignorant city folk can have meat at the grocery store.

i'd take a fox.. but i'm afraid my wolfdog would jump over the fence to eat it(if we had it outside.. doubt it.. but you never know)... Comment #51 susan (65.6.186.35) -
well i like wild animals and if i found a hurt, baby or orphaned wild animal of course i would take it in. i mean i know all about habitat desruction and stuff but there is no "nature" any more humans threw "nature" away like back in the 1800's. so that fox in that trap should be taken to a vet or a an wildlife sanctuary so that it can be healed and released back into the wild. now if i was walking through the woods and came across a starving baby fox a would raise it myself, unless it was illeagal, then i would give to a wildlife place.now i'm only 13 years old but truth be told i'm probably one of the smartest people who posted on this site, not bragging or anything. and i'm going to tell you a story over the summer i went to my grandma's house who lived about 20 miles out of ocala florida, (i live further south by west palm beach). anyway i went there with my aunt to catch wild cats that were in the woods which was like 30 feet from the house. they were normal cats probably dropped off by some idiot who didn't want i cat anymore, bbecause she was a purebred siamese unspayed(she had 4 kittens)cat. so i was there to go catch the momma and her kittens. well i didn't succeed and eventually the were cuaght and euthenized by the care and control. but while i was up there i saw something i will never forget. my first real exsperiance with a wild predator. so one night around dusk i was walking outside and sitting in tree's when i started to go back inside, so i hopped out of my little short tree i turned around, and there it was a grey fox, full grown and staring strait into my eyes, oh but he was about 30 ft away, but i could still feel his eyes on me, i was scared, so i sat down and started talking about how pretty and big it was and stuff, and then it got even more scared of me because of by voice and so he stared at me one last time and run quick as lightning into the woods. i never saw him for the rest of my stay, but i think he was in hiding or something, thought i was going to kill him or something. but i want to go back up there again.
oh and one of my uncle's in west virginia owns a farm and while we were up there last simmer (2006), he was doing something and comes back with a fawn. so he stuck in a dog house and me and my sisters were petting it and it was scared at first but it calmed down a bit because we were quiet and slow. so after my uncle is done cutting the grass i think, he was going to go put it back around dusk. so we left if alone and after a couple of hours we wnt back to it but it wasn't there so we asked our uncle if he put it back he siad no. so he siad it probably got up and ran to the forest to find it'd mom. but i'll never forget it's touch, warm and soft like silk.
Ya'll are killing me, hunting a recreational and animal control method and it even alone is not enough to keep the animals down to a healthy level. I support hunting a trapping to a full extent, I in fact do it myself. The fox is wild and could be fixed but in a way it is inhumane, it is better euthanize it then and there. I have caught animals as well I have not targeted. Now to all you tree huggers on here who thing hunting is a terrible thing and all that hunt and trap are pretty much a freakin hitler, kiss my ass and let me tell you if you look it up and find the reason for most hunters it isn't to have a head on there wall or bragging rights but they love nature and they try to do proper management so the animals don't starve of hunger or disease. I live in Arkansas where we have a low acorn crop this year so the deer are having a hard time finding food. I try to help but I love deer meat. Now to all of you bunny hugging faggots you can go sit outside and watch bluejays for all I care, I am going hunting!!!

hey yall are crazy! whats wrong with you trying to set a trap for a bear unless it has damaged something of yours you shouldn't set a trap any way. and fox don't stink if you give them a bath regularly, every animal marks their territory (including cats and dogs!!!!)and dogs dig just as often as foxes do. and you should take it to the vet or call you local wildlife resource center and ask what to do.

Comment #58 Mikey from The Toilet in the Great Beyond -
Stupid treehuggers! I owned a bobcat for awhile! I owned a skunk and an armadillo! And I'm also getting a fox! Im a falconer, so let me guess... you think me owning hawks and falcons and all the other stuff is immoral. Well let me tell ya something! Here they eat every friggin day, which they DONT do in the wild! And to even get licsenced for some of this stuff (especially hawking) you have to know everything about them. Much, much more than ya'll would ever think about knowing, or even have the intelligence to! Hunting - Me and my whole damn family do it! Like Hunter stated above it AINT for bragging rights! My family uses every imaginable part of game, believe you me! Ya'll dumb treehuggers need to learn a little more about nature before yall go jackin' your jaws! Let me guess, your all soft city folk huh? Country living's differant, keep your ugly noses out of it, and for God's sake, if you dont like hunting, STAY OFF THE TOPIC!!!!!!!!!

Im not against or for hunting. As long as its regulated and done for food just for fun i suppose its ok. I honestly coudlent kill and animal and not feel guilty unless i felt i would die otherwise. And being human, i wont so theres no reason for me to hunt. We have demesticated animals to imminate that. But in some situations liek the over population of deer in my area, its somewhat needed. Theres so many of them they end up starving to death or getting pelted by cars. Honestly i think being shot would be kinder.I myself own exotics and dogs. I see noting wrong with it as long as u can take proper care for the animal. If it is an exotic or wild animal, it will enver be a pet. Its a companion, trying to make it a pet will just result in your injuries lol

in ohio im almost always seeing a red fox. and trying to get a exotic's permit to slowly domesticate them . now shuld i?
This is incredibly amusing. I spent an hour reading everything and laughed several times. BTW you can find fennec foxes all over the internet for sale. And what about ferrets? There exotics and for the most part you don't need a permit. Unless you live in californa I hear they are illeagle there. Oh and as for BLACKFOX? I agree with you. Ehoever made the soup comment is jerk. What was the word "hunaine"????? Killing a fox with a frozen boot is not "HUMAINE". Wow I am enjoying this. Try and keep the fowl language to a minimum OK?

I broke my dogs leg once on accident and we duck-taped a pop-sickle stick to both sides of its leg, and it took about a week or so, but it healed and she was fine. They euthanize HORSES for that kind of thing. Not small critters. You guys are some serious city-slicker geeks.
Guys, Drop it, this is already old news. I'm sure the fox is fine so can we just drop all the hostility? whatever was done is done and theres nothing we can do about it now anyway. However, it would be nice if you would stop trying to catch animals...it would prevent a lot of these arguments from actually happening.
well most of u sound like a bunch of tree hugging hippies why dont you just go tape ur self to a tree maybe that will stop hunters and trappers eat less beef and more venison support our hunters>>>>
Comment #68 Wayde (69.48.13.116) -
Wow! A lot of hostility out there. I own several exotic animals-bear, cougar, foxes(9 pups born yesterday), wolf, coyote, serval, etc., yet I can't take exception to hunters who enjoy the activity. I personally can't hunt anymore-I am too emotionally invested in my animals, but that doesn't mean that hunting is 'immoral' or 'wrong'. It's just a personal choice. The original post was looking for help with an animal, and the guy was attacked. We need to find a position between bunnyhugger and 'kill 'em all', don't you think? Managed hunting does not significantly affect animal populations-tearing up their habitat to build our homes and shopping malls, however, does. Also, the difference between the hunter and non-hunter is very slim. A hunter eats what HE kills-the rest of us allow someone else to kill the cow, pig, or chicken before we eat it(apologies to the vegans out there). BTW, ranch raised, domestic source foxes are legal in most states with a simple furbearers permit. Check your local and state regulations. MOST foxes do NOT make house pets-they do smell strongly, and glands are only one source of the smell. They urinate on their food and water, and any of their favorite toys. Mine live outdoors in large kennels, and they get plenty of playtime with us and each other.

to all you hunters out there way to go. and its all right to be a tree hugger just dont run your mouth about something you know nothing about. i hunt and really like deer meat and still love animals. And who ever put up comment 20 is a freaking idiot. Im getting a red fox pup and a permit that allows me to keep it. So no one has any reason to threaten any one thats getting or wants a pet thats perfectly leagle with a permit
Comment #70 Wayde Forster from New York -
If you need to know about raising that pup, let me know-I raise them and have 7 pups right now. Good for you, sticking to your guns(no pun intended).email alt2wayde@yahoo.com

Comment #73 a hunter and an animal lover (74.234.97.90) -
yall really now. i love hunting. in is needed in some places and it is fun. not that i loving killing animals it is just the waking up early and being with my brothers. we never kill just to kill (if you no what i mean) we always eat the ducks or give them to some one else who will. all the hostilities come for different views. it is ok to express your views but you dont have to be so hateful and mean about it. i love animals and nature and just because i hunt that doesnt mean i am evil

For Chad Butll and people like em..you should get your info right before blabbing your mouth.Foxes...for everyones information...ARE legal in SOME States...here in Indiana they can be considered pets.. SOME states are ilegal.. some sites show what states allow it and dont. And this whole leave the wild animals alone...you better not have a dog or a cat or a ferret or a rabbit or a horse or even a fish either.. because if you havent noticed..they used to be wild animals... and according to you guys they should still be. the dog became mans best friend Because the Man tamed the dog and it became a pet. i agree some things should be left wild but for things like raccoons and foxes and skunks its just their turn to become pets people get used to it.

Comment #78 Katsumi from USA - Wed Oct 22 00:39:49 2008
Okay, seriously everything that i've read here...has almost no irrelavance to a Fox; exept for people talking about how to 'humanily' put one down with a frickan frozen shoe....what is not humane, expecially when it takes about 20 hits...to people fighting over if hunting is good or bad for the enviroment and is having a fox legal. For one, everyone needs to take a breather and think about what they're really trying to get across. Yes, anyone who said that having a fox is legal, it depends you have to go through a LEGAL breeder and have a liscence. And if hunting is humane, you could fight about that untill you die. Personally, i think it's okay as long as you kill what you eat, or give it to a food pantry for the less fortunate. And, there is a reason why the government gets upset if you kill something without a tag or a permit, because it could upset the eco system. If anyone would pay attention to the local news around hunting season, they'd find that out really quick if it happens that year. ~Kat~

Comment #80 vet (4.231.85.116) - Sun Nov 16 19:19:32 2008
take some vet rap and rap his leg up and give it plenty of food and water. DO NOT KILL IT AND SELL IT'S HIDE. They are sometimes rare in different parts of America. or take it to a wildlife agent.
