You do realize that dogs are wild animals?

That parrots are wild animals?

Exotic fish?

hampsters?

There's no such thing as a NOT wild animal.

How the owner treats the animal is a whole different story.

people like dj make me sik screwin around with people that need answers for serious things. i mean come on peta some people want anteaters and giraffes or a heard of buffalo i mean its there business let them do it as long as they can take care of it. i know people that have exotic animals not as pets but because they wont survive in the wild like shadow the owl i saved who was almost pecked to death byy a bigger owl now local falconers with bird training experience are healing him

Comment #27 Wayde Forster from New York -

Al- you are just one more ignorant child. Dogs are domestic, as are cattle, sheep, house cats, goats, chi9ckens-the list goes on. How the owner treats an animal has nothing to do with whether it is a wild animal. I have bears, cougars, servals, coyotes, foxes, and wolves, and they are all here because some ignorant a--hole thought they would be good pets. They are NOT! Come back when you know something of what you speak.

Sarah, I'm terribly sorry to hear that your pet is not well.

I wish I had some advice for you but I don't. I was meerely

looking into ant eaters when I found this thread.

The one sugestion that I can offer would be to call a zoo.

also, a reptile store would be adept at handeling questions

about unusual pets. They may at least point you in a direction.

Best wishes to you and your animal.

Have you talked to a/a few Veterinary(ies)?

Oh and for you who say "omg it's a wild animal it belongs in the wild". Sure, they'll live and die happily in the wild, but you CANNOT argue that the animal under a responsible and caring owner won't have a better life in captivity.

Animals don't have a sense of "justice".

Sure, some animals require large expanses and will perish if they are confined to small spaces, but anteaters are not those animals. But they require exercise like you would give a dog.

Have you tried dressing it in people clothes?

i absolutley adore anteaters they are the cutest animals in the world to me, second to dogs that is, however, as much as i like them i still dont think you should have them as pets, they are exotic animals, not like cats or dogs, they belong in the wild.sure its okay to take pictures of them and study them, but capturing them and locking them up in cages is outta the question, how would you feel if someone took you out of your home, and locked you in a cage?you would probably be frightened, so i say adore them, appreciate them, but leave them in the wild where they belong.

Comment #38 Big Dog from The Woods -

I think it is a very bad idea to purchase a pet that you don't personally take home with you for a variety of reasons...

Knowing its personality and health first hand

Avoiding scams

Avoiding problems with customs service(s)

I hope someone in Central Belize is looking for one and can meet you.

If anyone has information on exotic adoptions or fosters in the New York tri state area, please contact me. I would never advocate breeding of exotics, but I have experience with reptiles, mammals, and marsupials, as well as veterinary experience and I have room to foster or adopt an exotic animal in the area, anteaters included. I also have a special place in my heart for opossums (I've had several as pets).

I also have excellent vocabulary and grammar skills, which sadly seem to be lacking on this list.

People, please understand taking care of exotics is not a joke. They have specialized diets and health issues, as well as a more high maintenance standard of living and a much higher vet bill! Cats and dogs and rats and fish are cute too!

Hello People.. I am an Anteater [female]. My cousin in Rio, Brazil [1.5yr old female Tamanduas] wants to come to the States. She fancies the American culture. She is very pretty, polite and is very "down" if you know what i mean ;) She seeks an american citizen who can provide her with a greencard. In return she offers gifts. these gifts include but are not limited to, taking care of an ant problem, cleaning out your ears, anus, and of course the best handjob you've ever had with those massive strong hands of hers. please reply at pua@anteater.com

So many hippies. :(

"Wild animals belong in the wild!"

Says who? If you believe in God, He created animals for our enjoyment. If you believe in a purely naturalistic world, then animals don't "belong" anywhere. Evolution isn't an entity with a plan in mind. An animal "belongs" in the wild just as much as it "belongs" in captivity.

"OMG how would u liked to be locked up in a cage!?!!1"

How would you like to have your house cut down, while you're still in it, so someone can use it to make their house? How would you like getting your reproductive organs taken out without your consent? How would you like being bred on a crappy farm and raised purely for food with no chance to escape? You probably wouldn't like that, but most of the people whining probably live in a wooden house, have their pets neutered and eat meat.

That doesn't even matter anyway because no one talked about locking up their anteater in a cage. I'd assume they'd be like ferrets where they're only in a (large) cage when the owner has to be away and cannot watch them to make sure they don't get into trouble.

Also, animals usually see their cage as a den or safe spot.

"OMG they are not pets, they're wild animals!"

Dogs, cats, cattle, etc. were all once "wild" animals too. Apparently after a couple captive bred generations they DO make good pets. ;)

Heck, I raised two baby starlings that were pushed from their nest (yeah, nature is so great) and they became fine pets and were very tame.

Also, all domestic animals have their wild animal instincts, albeit dumbed down a bit. They're still there though. Is it cruel to keep a dog if you don't have more than one for its "pack?" Is it cruel to not let it hunt and chase live prey? They obviously enjoy doing this. Is it cruel to keep them confined to a yard, house or leash? Is it cruel to remove their reproductive organs, thereby altering their hormones to make them easier to control by people?

How is keeping an exotic pet cruel, no matter how well-taken care of it is, but not a dog?

"They shouldn't be taken from the wild!"

I'm sure most people selling anteaters are selling captive bred animals, so they are not taken from the wild. I'm sure anteaters could be domesticated just like any other animals. Even captive bred snakes are much more docile than their wild counterparts.

"They are better off in the wild!"

Purely opinion. The wild isn't some magical Disney-esque place where everyone dances and frolics in the sun all day. Dying of starvation, disease and predation (usually being eaten alive) is a very real thing. Most animals are going to die this way. It is incredibly rare for a wild animal to live to old age.

Could you imagine living in an environment where you always had to be on alert for things ambushing you and eating you alive? Or searching for a scrap of food as your stomach slowly eats itself? How about getting a cut or scrape and then having it grow into a painful infection and slowly dying from it?

How that is "better" than a life in captivity is beyond me. As long as the animal is having its needs met and is healthy, what's the problem?

Also, if being a "pet" is so bad, then why is it okay to have dogs and cats? Shouldn't they be spayed and neutered out of existence since being a pet is obviously so terrible compared to living in the wild?

That tamanduagirl on youtube doesn't help anyone with info on anteaters - so don't bother with her.

I like it how people are bitching about animals they consider "wild" and how we oppress them. honestly a life of security from hunting illness and free food doesnt sound too bad to me. the only difference between your dog and that wolf is some "arrogant retard" took it from the wild and inbred it for years. So why cant people nowadays go and have them they are safe and well cared for. my raccoon of two years ago left home and came back the other day for a free handout and security. sure he adjusted to the wild but, he knew that the "arrogant retards" offered more than just opression.

domesticated is not always better than extict. They would have no genetic diversity. and the person who posted the orange being cut in half knew what they were talking about. Please dont get an exotic animal as a pet without doing extensive research first and getting the required licenses

Comment #49 zookeeper445 (205.188.116.206) -

Zoos have limited funds as it is and usually can only affiliate with aza facilities
