Do any of you have one of these? Friends of ours had a couple of them. They were pretty expensive - they paid about $150 each for them. Every time that I saw them they seemed quite high strung. Don't know if that's typical of them or not.

Wikipedia has a nice write up about the Sugar Gliders... Their photo at the top is one ugly beast... though it looks a little better in the photo further down.

Here is what Wikipedia said about having them as pets.

Maybe "inquisitive nature" means high strung.

Where legal, the Sugar Glider is not difficult to breed in captivity under the right conditions, and small numbers have been legally and illegally exported to America where they have formed a breeding population for sale as pets. Breeding mills are a controversial subject. The Sugar Glider is a popular pet because of its sweet, lively, inquisitive nature. It is a loving and intelligent pet that, with plenty of attention, bonds well to its human companions. As a pet, it requires a special diet that includes vitamin and calcium supplements, and insects. In the USA, keeping them as a pet is illegal in certain jurisdictions, such as California, Georgia, Hawaii, and Alaska. Many other states in the United States require a permit.

I am glad I found this post. I ended up taking one in because my neighbor couldnt care for it anymore. All I have is the cage that it came in and food. Now I am off to the pet store to get what it needs.

You can't have anything in CA sorry. The only thing you can really do is move, or try to change the law. I moved after living there for 20 years.

, rednose pitbull: Grrr
wow and i thought new york was tough on laws i dont have to have a usda licence unles i have more than 3 breeding pairs...

ok you dont have to have a license im a cop and i have a sugar glider. no one can find out. just keep it in your house and dont ell every body. if they do find out its a tiny ticket you get.

You are not in CA. CA would take your animal away and kill it. Plus a cop wouldnt call them self a cop, and would have better typing skills.

i own 2 sugar glider girls, i have for about a year now. I decided to get them when i went over to a friends house that had 4 of them. They are great pets but definetly not for everyone. I live in Florida however and we donot require anything special to own them here. i have them in a 5 foot tall cage. i play with them nightly. they have very different personalities so i have to play with them differently. One is calm and the other is hyper. My calm one likes to sit on my shoulder while i do laundry, cook, clean, and check e mails, i know she wants to go back to her cage when she tries to jump off of me. the hyper one actually likes to play with me, she will jump from one hand to the other, play with feathers, use little cat toys (without catnip) and nibble on me when she wants more attention (nibble not bite). anything else you might want to know, just ask, i love them, however they are nocturnal and they do require attention.

First there are a few issues here. Sugar gliders have been legalized in all states except 4. California, Georgia, Alaska and Hawaii. If you are caught with them in an illegal area, they WILL confiscate your glider and destroy it.

Another thing, its not really accurate that you dont have to be licensed unless you have 3 or more breeding pairs. Truth is, you can own up to 3 BREEDING FEMALES before needing to be licensed by the USDA as a registered breeder. I have been registered with the USDA for close to 5 years. I hate to see people talk about "if you dont tell everyone you wont get caught"

Sugar gliders are NOT for everyone. they are very demanding needing different and complex diets every night. They are gliders so they need a large amount of space to fly around. It recommended to have a cage no smaller than 36 inches high. My gliders have a cage that is 6 foot tall by 4 foot wide.

I do own a store online if you want to check it out. Its www.gliderville.com. I also wrote Sugar Gliders for Dummies which you can also purchase on my site as well after August.

Also if you have any questions you can contact me at michelle@gliderville.com

Ca is not killing gliders any more they do ship them to other states now. Pa they are still illegel in. I have friends that are USDA breeders and if you have 3 or more breeding females you do need a license. For more info on sugar gliders check out Glider Central @ sugarglider.net. The people there can and will answer all questions about gliders. Please check out Glider Central.

OK guys and gals.....I live in CA. Southern California! I have a pair and have had them a few years. I sold something on Ebay and the buyer was local. She came to pick it up and when she entered our house she saw a huge cage and wondered what was in there....2 Suggies. To her surprise she was excited yet a litle reserved. When I asked what she did for a living, she mentioned she were an animal control officer (of my county). I though holy COW....what now? She said "don't worry....I've never had to confiscate any in 15 years of work. They look happy, healthy and loved. I don't know why they are illegal now. 10 years ago they weren't." She hated ferrets and confiscate those pretty often. If owners get tired of them, they let them go free and they then carry diseases and become mean and bite. Even though I get my sugar glider food from PetCo, Petsmart and other large petshops right down the street...ferret food is right next to it. I don't think anytime soon they will legalize Sugar Gliders, but we have partially legalized marijuana, so you never know :-)

Hi! I currently live in Australia where sugar gliders are native. This sucks im in Western Australia and we aren't even allowed to keep them as pets, but over in th USA you guys are! Alot of other states of Aust let you have them, here but most of our native anilmas are not allowed to be kept as pets.

Anyway for my question im actually comming over to California in January hopefully for good. Can anyone give me a list of what we are and aren't allowed to keep as pets. I mean including normal (dogs and cats) and exotic animals. Plz email it to me!!

Thanks

hey sugar gliders seem pretty cool but so are ferrets....i dont think they become mean and bite when you set them free and besides they have rabies vaccines ....so i dont think its fair to say that about them since i owe 2 little ones for almost 2 years and they are adorable , they may not fly but they can run everywhere and play till they drop...unfortunately it sucks too that they're illegal in ca and ny's 5 boroughs...

Sugar Gliders are not illegal in PA whoever said that. You can't import them. If you breed them you must have a permit.

If you sell them you must have a permit.
