You DO NOT want a raccoon for a pet, they are not made to be a pet. They belong in the wild. It's not fair to not let them have that freedom. I am a wildlife rehabilitator and I KNOW how fast they change, they are cute and all when they are small but that all changes and then they pay the price and most all have to be put down then because of humans being stupid and selfish.

If you wont to have a racoon as a pet then go ahead and buy one they are like most animals you look after them well they will be happy i seen one on a police program and it looked quit happy i dont know anyone who has one but they look great pets

do not listen to that rehabor, it is true raccoons are a handful, its like haveing a 2 year old for life, getting them fix helps a lot, when they hit sexual maturity, 2 to 3 years old give them there space between jan thru march if they ask for it, unfortunatelly many rehabbors i have learned r stuck in the 1960's, it is true some raccoon born in the wild prefer to stay in the wild however some dont and 90% of orphan babies returned will die, they dont have the skills to survive, i have talk via the internet age hello rehabors hundred of raccoon companions and they love there human companion, hey rehabor before u open your mouth look at raccoon molly on utube from germany, tell me he is not content and happy, you will need to build a rather large encloser, minumum requirment is 80 square feet, also check with your state make sure u can get a liscence, as that rehab person said herself, unfortunatlely because some rehabors r archiac they kill them because they think they can play god, i know of many cases one inparticular where a women and raccoon who choose to stay out of the wild live happy and content for 6 years, some nieghbor who was angry about something else, reported her, department of natural resource stole the women companion, raccoon would not allow her to see her friend raccoon, the raccoon died in there custody, again '''humane treatment''', ''not cruel'', the raccoon died from being pulled from the only ma she knew, and the very agency that is payed by r tax dollers killed her, thats inhumane and cruel so check with your state because if not allowed, they will kill her, him, its not about whats humane with these people its about archiac philosophies and there refusal to see humans and raccoons if people choose to have one can live together happy and content, under the rite habitate provided by the raccoon companion, it reaklly bothers me that the very people who say there helping wildlife in this case with raccons r killing them, thats not helping them thats killing them, we r not talking a species that is big enough to eat us, there r shot aviable for raccoon ask you vet, the rabbies issue there r shots out there but recentlly a proven method of oral rabies vaccine has been used, but again state by state, some states dont want to stop rabies, thats crazy isnt it, but the majority of coons do not have rabies, they can carry it, but it isnt very often, mary

I would like to adopt or buy a Racoon Dog that China uses for "faux fur" for American trade. I want to promote awareness to everyone that these animals are "dogs" and should not be skinned alive for their fur.

I want this pet to be part of my family, but at the same time, arouse awareness and inquiries in what kind of dog he/she is. That will spread the word that fur is not what it seems.

RACCOONDOGS my name is mary wille, thinking the exact same thing guys, there beautiful creatures, an no-one in the usaa knows about them, i do give me a call or email me if u want info on these guys i want some also, it will take about a year, paperwork in customs is the problem, in wisconsin they are not illigel, but u need liscence/permits, i have learned a lot , my number is 1 608 339 7824, if i do not pic up i have caller id i will call back, exstrmelly interestedin getting them also for educational reasonsONLY, mary

mary wille here again, sorry i was in a big hurry, last message, if u guys r serious we can do this, like i said it will take about a year, but u want to do this legally, so no-one can ever get a search warrant come in your home and take them, i have seen it done with other critters, they make excellent pets, very adaptable, in the uk there classification is dog, no permits, must be nice, lets do this guys these creatures r beautiful and they need human help to stop the cruelity, mary wille

Raccoons are a handful, but they're not impossible.

Many people have noted that line bred raccoons captive bred for generations seem to stay more tractable with age. Hence the dichotomy of rehabbers claiming they're impossible. Additionally, altering the animal helps tons. And since rehabbers are usually planning to release the animal, they're not impossible.

However, anyone that thinks a raccoons is a rodent (its a carnivore in the family procyonidae), doesn't seem to be astute enough to be taking on any exotic pet. Raccoon or raccoon dog.

I'm hoping someone has some experience that can help me. I have a female raccoon that I found at the side of the road next to he dead mother. She is a year old and has alway's been my pet. I went away on business for a week and my daughter took care of her. Since I have been back she is acting violent to me, she is growling, hissing and biting at me. She is fine with the rest of the family but I'm worried she may be changing. Has anyone had an experience like this with a female raccoon? Is there any chance it has something to do with her breeding cycle? If so when will she be herself again? Will it be the same every year at this time?

Sorry, I feel as if I have to clear this up, but they said Raccoon DOGS, not Raccoons.

Raccoon Dogs are, well... a species of canine. :/ They are in fact actual dogs, just named raccoon dogs because they have similar characteristics / coloring. And they are very fluffy and cute. x)

i dont think there nothing wrong with having a racconn dog butyou guys must be carefull make sure you get the dog from a good place or adopt one!! the last thing we want is the chineese to make more money out of this beautiful dogs !!! and by the way i dont understand what is the deal with china they must stop the abuse

I'm not sure how easy it would be to get a Racoon dog for a pet, but perhaps if you took a trip to asia you could barter one off someone who was going to use it for fur and save it from a painful death.
