Mountain Lion

Hey, instead of searching through google.com until my eyes are sore, I was curious as to information regarding owning a mountain lion (cougar) as a pet, and such things as laws regarding different areas, breeders, etc. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Sweetie dont keep searching these online sites for your information!!!! I have been an exotic cat owner for years and in EVERY state you have to check with your state Wild Life Reserve for your rules and regulations and follow the guide lines for your permits and licenses as well as the USDA for licenses. Some people that tell you things while trying to promote the sell of any exotic breed might tell you anything to make the sell, because after you purchase its not their problem if you get caught. If you want an exotic pet you first must check with the W.L.R. in your state to see which they allow, as well as city and county. You have to check your land, zoning and alot of things.....its not as easy as buying an animal and thats it.Some animals are no permit/no licenses, ....while others must be only if you own a zoo there are also laws about buying and transporting acrosss the state lines and orgin paper work......ect, ect, ect.You can buy almost anything, but if cought by the W.R.A. THE FINES ARE VERY HIGH !!!!!! Certain animals which can be kept inside might require that you have bars on your windows if you allow your pet to be free in the home.

It is sad that all states are not the same so it wouldnt be so hard, but there is a reason behind everything.Do your research and make sure you dont get caught in a situation where your heart is broken because you have bonded with an animal which you may never be able to see again. When they come in with a swat team and have to shoot darts to be able to transport your baby as you beg them not to, you will wish you had done your research.Trust me I moved from one state to the other but because I crossed the line into one that I was not allowed to have a cougar.........they took him after 11 years with me and all the begging and crying wouldnot change a thing. It is better to settle for something they will let you have rather than get something that will break your heart in the long run.He was native to the state which I moved to and had also been reclassified..........do your homework and not to be rude, but get it from the horses mouth rather than hear say.

"adopting a cougar"

you have no respect for wildlife if you try to own a large exotic cat like a cougar as a pet. You should leave wildlife where it belongs and think about owning a cat like that as a pet, they are not a house cat no matter where they come from they will always be wild, all it takes is one slip up and a cougar could easily hurt you!!

"it is safer to keep wild animals in captavity"

no if we leave big cats in the wild they are just going to be shot and killed or they are going to die due to loss of habitat and that isnt their fault, that is our fault. if we thought it was wrong keeping animals as pets, then we shouldnt be chopping down trees and shooting them. so really it is safer for them to live with us: if you are a proffesional that is. Thats why I am thinking of creating a cougar and snow leopard breeding program.

"how about a more balanced response"

from what i read owning cougars is not a bad choice they are known to be affectionate and much more tame then the other big cats though it's not really considered a big cat and yes they are hunted i don't think you need to go as far as starting a breeding center but they are safer as a pet then in the wild because of people hunting them if you want to breed a type i'd suggest cheetahs they're endagered considered the most vulnerable of the big cats and are pretty tame here's a site http://www. exoti ccatz .com/ index.html
