Sick Raccoon

Page 1 (Original Post)

Jess (1) from usa -

I have a friend who rescued a sick baby raccoon (mother was killed). She has had him for 4 years with no problems. He hasn't eaten in like 2 weeks (still drinking a little). He is also limping on his hind leg like it is broken but it's not.

Any suggestions?

thanks

Any time you find a wild animal, ALWAYS rehydrate them before attempting to give them food.

Regular water drinking 24 hours to 72 hours is a good time, depending on the age (the younger/smaller, the less they'll need, the older/bigger the more they'll need) then you can work from there.

Since this has been a while, he's probably encountered some sort of bone deficiency. This comes from feeding an animal stuff you THINK is good for them, but it's not, ultimately. Research and find out what special diet raccoons needs. Google is always helpful.

A common problem with squirrels is that people feed them regular cow milk or goat milk, when they actually need a blend of ESBILAC (this is the best for them) dog formula. Giving them the wrong milk in early development will either kill them early on, or will get them with a bone disease and get them that way.

So, either he has encountered a problem like that, or he's gotten into some rough housing or possibly a bit of a depression. Either way, if this continues much longer, you should get a professional standpoint. Take him to the doctor if you possibly can.

If not, I still reccomment researching on racoon care, treatments and symptoms to ailments. Like I said, Google does wonders.

Jess; I have quite a bit of admiration for anyone who is willing to devote time to try to heal a sick animal. You say this problem has been going on for two weeks? There comes a time when you've exausted everything you know to do and should get him to a veterinarian. Some vets do have the expertice to treat wild animals and will treat them. If you had no success on your own by now, don't put it off untill it's too late to save him. I'm sure you are aware of how much pets are missed when they pass away.

I have raised a few raccoons. The miracle cure seemed to be mysatin (I might have misspelled) however you can get it from a veternarian supply store. Raccoons love the taste and you just give them one to two eye droppers and they seem to get well very quickly.
