train pomeranian

mary (63.176.159.17) -

Can anyone help explain how to train your pomeranian for basic household rules ?

Here are some of the first steps in house training your Pomeranian. First set up the training area. Since dogs don’t like to soil there bedding, you need a confined area such as a crate or small room like a bathroom. When using a crate, make sure the dog has enough room to move around - you can’t expect your Pomeranian to be happy in a small confining crate for the duration of the house breaking period.

You need to spend as much time in the training area with your Pom as possible. Play with the dog in there and feed the dog there as well. Make sure your dog has a nice bed and can feel all comfy in the area. Don’t get discouraged if the dog does eliminate in the area at first - once he recognizes this as his own space he will be reluctant to do so. You can let the dog out in other areas when you are able to watch him, but when you are not home, keep your dog confined to “his area”.

i need help training my pomeranian to be the nicest pet ever! i will start going to an old folks home to let her visit the people there. i am just worried how she is going to act towards them! how do i train her to be really nice?

I think dogs have to be predisposed to be nice enough to take to the nursing homes. Definately, you have to train them well though. I'd suggest professional training.

I got a pomeranian puppy about a month ago. I have tried EVERYTHING to house train her. one day she'll do fine, then the next she'll pee all over my floor. I will have just taken her outside for 20 minutes, then she'll come inside and pee all over my floor. Nothing seems to work with her. I've tried rubbing her nose in it and lightly spanking her, puppy pads, and a squirt bottle, b/c I've heard they don't like water. Is there anything specific I need to know about potty training a pom or do I need to go about it another way?

Why did you get a pomeranian in the first place? Didn't you do research on the breed? Pomeranians are VERY voiceful little dogs. They have to get their say in on everything. We breed chihuahuas and pomeranians and it's NEVER quiet at our house unless some magical thing makes them all sleep at the same time. Don't buy a breed unless you know all the negatives of that breed!!!

Comment #11 Cat Magnet from Catlandia -

Get a life! Buy a cat! That might get you nine lives.

Well we have three dogs our Pom Sasha is 5 our Golden Austin is 10 and Annie our Jack Russell. The Golden is absolutly perfect never makes a mistake in the house, Sasha and Annie on the other hand are back in the crate. I am trying to find out how long we need to crate them to Re-house break them.

I need help with keeping my pom from barking.

We just got him and whenever we put him in his crates he barks for hours on end. After awhile you think he would get tired, but he doesn't!! I have no problem with going potty. I braught him for his first walk and he went pee in the grass like a good little doggy, but when it comes ot bed time, hell breaks loose. Do you have any idea's on what I can do? Do I keep letting him bark until he hopefully looses his voice? Any ideas?

Comment #14 New Pom Owner (74.116.156.188) -

I just got a Pom about 3 wks ago. Her name is Nishka. She is 6yrs old. Nishka is the most lovabe dog ever!...She does bark alot, everytime she hears the door, the neighbours, I cant even think about taking her around other dogs - they can even be in sight - she start barking like crazy and snap at them. I just she is just really jealous!!!

I noticed that she ate out of her dish a few times, but it has been 3 going on to 4 days that i have not seen her eat. I am sure she thinks I will give her human food so this is what stops her, but how can I train her to eat the food. I haven't given her ay human food since last night because I felt bad, like I was starving her.

We just got a 3 mo. old Pom and I want to know how often to try to get her to go pee/potty? She is so tiny and is almost intimidated by the grass and the dark when it's night and I want her to go. Do I need to both papar and yard train her or can I really teach her to let me know when she has to go out and how? Thanks!

To Maureen,

I have a new Pom too, and he will not go outside. He is 3mon old and about 3.5 lbs, I am paper training him. He does very well with it. He is a bit scared outside. I think its normal for such a little dog. I will try to housebreak him after he is totally paper trained. If he always goes inside on the paper and not outside, I will be fine with that.

I want to know how to teach my female pomeranian that she isnt allowed to use the potty in a certain area without spanking her.She wont listen and she doesnt come to me or anything. HELP!!

Comment #23 Bob in Ontario (99.249.132.85) -

Our six month old Pom was housebroken in three weeks. He is trained to a litter box. As far as barking he has thus far only been vocal about once a week and then only if he is frustrated that dinner is taking too long to be ready. When he was 9 weeks old I gaited him into our second bathroom with the litter box in the shower and his blanket covering the floor. the box just became the natural place for him to go. For the first month he would actualy hold himself while out for a walk and wait to be back to his litter box to potty.

Whether you are paper training your Pom or training them to go outside, the key is persistance with them and consistency in your own behavior and reactions with them. It is easy to forget how tiny their bladders are and how often they need to go! I train my Poms on potty pads ..but after a week and a half to two weeks of hard work they should be using their potty pad a good 90% of the time (don't forget they are puppies and accidents will happen at first). After your Pom eats, drinks, plays, or naps...take them to the pad and say the same word to them every time..I always just say "potty". If you catch them having an accident, stick their nose in it and then take them to the pad and tell them to potty. Eventually they will get the idea of what they are supposed to do. It is also so important to praise them when they go on their pad..so they will associate going on the pad with good attention from you. It takes ALOT of patience, especially with small breeds like Poms..but you will be so thankful you were persistent with them in the end.

Hey, I've had a Pomeranian/ Jack Russel for almost a year now (I've had him since he was 6 weeks, but I've been around him his whole life). He is one crazy little dog. When he was a puppy he had a hard time being house broken, but there were some tricks I learned.

First, get the dog used to the times you take him out. Timing is the key. Take the dog out about 3-4 times a day at about the same time.

When they use the rest room, give them a treat and tell them they're good. Don't praise them too much because then they think your trying to play.

And if you can, have a place where the dog can get in and out of the house. For a little while I was living in a house with a back yard and I just left the window open so he could get in and out. But now that I am in an apartment, we just take him out at the same time everyday. He never goes in the house.

If that doesn't work, try and have him around other dogs as much as possible. I've seen Pomeranians pee in the house over and over and once they got around other dogs all they wanted to do was do be outside and pee all over everything else. (I think it has something to do with territory. Once they see a dog pee outside, they want to pee outside as well to mark their ground)

To get them to not bark so much?

Well.. there really is NO way thats going to happen. My dog gets crazy, and right now a squirt bottle is working, but before that nothing worked. He even gets really excited when we come home from work and sometimes he starts to dribble a little pee because he is so excited. For that, I just make him sit before I'll pet him so he knows he needs to calm down. These dogs are really smart and out spoken. So if you didn't want an alarm - then you didn't get the right dog!

Small toy breeds can be a bit stubborn but also love to please their owner. Beginning at 2 months old, a puppy can learn basic commands. The key to any training is to begin when they are young, be patient and be consistant. Your dog needs to depend on your actions, commands and words. Praise should always be given when your dog listens, do not use treats or your dog could soon become overweight.

When a dog is small, you must show your dog what to do. Say the word "Food" over and over while you lead your dog to where its food and water will always be. Say the word "Sit" over and over while you gently press down on your dog to make him or her sit. When ever they do as you wish, pat them, hug and kiss them and talk with happy excited words.

And you CAN teach an old dog NEW tricks... It all works the same, just choosing what action you wish for them to learn, choosing ONE command word, giving praise and repeating the teaching process until they are successful.
