Usually a dog is ready to give birth 62 to 63 days after covering. Do you know the actual date when she was bred? I have found that when a dog is ready to whelp there are many tell tail signs. The first one is they begin to nest. By this they will arrange and rearrange there bedding. Her vulva will swell to four times it's normal size. Her nipples will become red and she will become engourged with milk. My little one actually becomes very clingy the day or two before she is ready and she actually comes and gets me to sit with her when it is time. Also there temp goes up 1 to 2 degrees 24 to 48 hours before. If this is your first time welping call your vet and give him or her you signs and he will put you mind to ease. Good Luck!

Dog temperatures will actually go DOWN 1 or 2 degrees.. generally 1.. She will start to be not interested in her food, she will want lots of attention and will be licking her vulva alot.

Generally the best sign would be the water sack starting to protude from her privates.. this will mean she is about to have puppies in the next few minutes..

Many things will happen. Mainly these first:

Your dog's tummy will seem to drop down

Your dog's temperature will drop below 100 degree F (normal temp is 101-102

Your dog will begin to eat a lot

Her nipples will enlarge quickly

She will begin to "nest", trying to find a soft spot

When labor is beginning, she:

may begin to vomit

will probably cry

When pups are about to be born:

The water sac will be pushed out first

when this happens it will be only minutes until the 1st pup comes out

pups can come out right away or it can be up to 2 hours in between each pup being born

There is a lot more information on the petpugdog site, under pregnancy.

My son's ab just had puppies this week--8, 3 of which died during the first 2 days. Yesterday, day 3, i went to the pen with son, suprise, there were6 puppies.

Is it possible to have the birth process stretch over 3 days as we think happened?

The best way to know is by taking your dog's temperature. As soon as her temperature drops, she is ready.

Count 63 days from the day your dog mated.

Comment #11 kyle (124.187.20.69) - Fri Sep 11 10:39:20 2009

reply to comment no8, it only takes a dog to get stuck once for them to become pregnant, by now you will probably have noticed that she is

Take your dog to a vet for gods sake! You people are so god damn stupid! If you have no ideas on breeding than DONT DO IT! Idiots, all of you.

As for comment #12, you're truly are an ass....even if you have a vet it's nice to know what types of symptoms to look for, no two are alike. You don't want to look like a dumb ass when you call you vet at 2am with a false alarm. If this site bothers you so much why did you even take the time to respond? It's people like you that have people scared to ask questions.
