YORKIE DOG SPASMS

Thank author of this post/commentMY YORKIE ABOUT 6 TO 7 TIMES A YEAR SEEMS TO HAVE MUSCLE SPASMS. HE CAN'T MOVE AND SEEMS TO STIFFIN UP SOMETHING LIKE A MUSCLE CRAMP. WE RUB HIS HIND QUARTERS AND I THINK THIS HELPS BUT I'M NOT POSITIVE ABOUT THAT. IT ONLY LASTS ABOUT 30 TO 60 SECONDS AND THEN HE IS FINE. ANY

HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED.

My yorkshire terrier minature 10yr old dog has recently started having frequent muscle spasms in her hind legs. 1 leg juts out of its own accord and my dog gets really aggitated. She is a tiny dog, I walk her but a.wards she gets these spasms. She also loves to sit on your lap. Im considering not taking her for walks anymore as I cannot see her looking so aggitated. Any help at all would be appreciated. Dionne

Our chihuahua cross, 5 years old, had a full-body spasm for about a minute, when his legs were at odd angles, his back was curved, and he shook like a leaf. After the episode he seems fine, though shaken by it. Is there any explanation or suggested treatment for this? Today was fairly hot, and we thought that perhaps he hadn't had enough water...

Any comments are welcome.

Thanks,

Tom

My situation is identical to Tom Kottmeir (above).

I took her to the vet, but the vet is unsure. Looking for answers. Does anyone have any ideas? It was not hot here today.

My dog also started curving her hind leg towards her front on December 1. She's still doing so, anyone found out why?

Thank author of this post/commentMy yorkie is 20months old and seems to have expierienced the same problem but he was sick aswell, it has only happened once but it was quite destressing as I thought he was having a fit. He has had an operation on his back leg to remove a bone from his hip. When I took him to the vet they said he had pain in that leg but didn't give me any answers about what had happened, from reading on the internet I think he had some sort of muscle spasm/cramp. Anybody know if this is normal?

I was watching tv on the couch with my yorkie sitting at the end of the couch sleeping. Suddenly, she awoke freaking out. She could not walk straight, her muscles tightened up, and I thought she was having some sort of seizure. My boyfriend actually said that it happened to his yorkie before too. His vet said that it might be some sort of idiopathic epilepsy which I read in another comment on the internet as well. I also read that this behavior might be a reaction to allergies, and I did feed her a dog treat from a dog bakery today. I also read that they are simply muscle spasms. Nevertheless, I just held her and tried to calm her down and after a minute or so she was fine, although she had an extremely scared look on her face. I am worried that this problem might be deeper, such as brain seizures or tumors. Any insight?

I HAVE A CHIHUAHUA WHO KEPT GETTING SEIZURES OR SPASMS ... I SEARCHED THE INTERNET FOR ANSWERS AS WELL AS ASK MY VET. ANYWAY ... QUITE BY ACCIDENT I DISCOVERED THAT THESE SEIZURES WERE BROUGHT ON BY APPARENT ALLERGIES. SHE LOVES TREATS AND OF COURSE WE ALWAYS GAVE HER A LITTLE PIECE OF WHATEVER WE WERE EATING. THEN I FOUND THAT WHEN WE GAVE HER ANYKIND OF BREAD AND SOMETIMES OTHER TABLE FOOD SHE WOULD GET A SEIZURE LATER ON THAT DAY. I NOW ONLY GIVE HER COOKED RICE MIXED WITH SOME KIND OF MEAT, CHICKEN OR WHATEVER MEAT (NOT ANYTHING SPICY) I HAVE LEFT OVER AND FOR TREATS I GIVE HER A LITTLE PIECE OF HOT DOG. IN SHORT ... I LIMIT HER TO COOKED RICE MIXED WITH SMALL PIECES OF MEAT AND CUT UP PIECES OF HOT DOG FOR TREATS. I ALSO FEED HER SMALL QUANTITIES 2 TIMES A DAY. SHE HAS NOT HAD A SEIZURE SINCE I ADOPTED THIS ROUTINE. AMAZING ... ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!

Actually I was watching a news segment on TV about autistic children and how putting them on a 'Gluten Free' diet helped with these certain things. The doctor went on to explain that these children have faulty digestive systems and when gluten sensitive foods were ingested it spread poisons to the brain and other parts of the body. Noticing as how my little chihuahua did react to certain foods like wheat flour products I wondered if this could be her problem? So .... I reduced her diet to 'gluten free' ... actually mainly just cooked rice, mixed with chopped meat of any sort. She has not had a spasm since then and that is over 2 years. She was getting them a lot. I slowly add different kinds of other foods in very small quantities as treats ... but stick closely to the rice and meat for her regular feedings. It is pretty easy to do ... I just cook up a cup of rice in the microwave, add left over meat that I chopped and freeze. I just take out 2 times daily for feeding. Seems the autism treatment worked for her.

"dogs having spasms"

My dog had the same problem, he is 9 years old & would just get immobile until we met a vet & he diagnosed a possible cause of arthritis or general muscle pain as the cause. The doc has provided a formulation of Methyl Sulfonyl methane commonly called MSM which is a powerful medication to reduce muscular pains for both humans & animals. You can probably suggest the above name & the doctor will prescribe what best is available as a formulation in your area. This medication also makes the dog more active & bright. It has worked miracles on my dog.

"dog spasms"

We have a old Yorkie abut 12 or 13, a few days ago he suddenly had a problem

with his right back leg,

It began to go into a running mode going fast then it would stick out to the side and he will fall over and his back legs are too weak to get himself back up, After a while he can get about again.

He has had weak back legs for a while now but this is bad.

He is blind and deaf to boot.

Can anyone give me a clue as to his problem problem please.

Geoff.

For the second time in 3 weeks... my 6 1/2 year old yorkie has gone into some kind of muscle spasm or seizure? The first time she fell off the ottoman and her entire body was tensed up, her legs were sticking out and she couldn't stand. After about a minute it was over and beside a little trembling and being frightened, she was fine. Then today I found her standing in the kitchen with her paw up. I picked her up and her body got really tense, her legs were sticking out, she couldn't stand up and she was staring blankly at me terrified. It was as if her body was trying to twist into different directions. By the time I got her to the car, about 2 minutes, her muscles were relaxing and before I got down the street to the vet, it was over. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT THIS COULD BE? SEIZURES OR SPASMS AND SHOULD I BRING HER TO THE VET? THEY OF COURSE SAY BRING HER IN BUT I'M WONDERING IF ALL THE TESTS IN THE WORLD WILL REVEAL ANYTHING?

My yorkie is 10 months old and has been having spasms for the past 2 weeks. At first I thought they were seizures but after keeping a journal of the episodes & reviewing the notes with my vet, she said the symptoms are not the usual ones that are experienced with epilepsy. My little AJ's hind legs have a mind of their own. Basically from halfway back on his body through his hind legs he does this jerking motion that he cannot control. He tenses up and is scared until it stops. If I hold him or pet him and sometimes when he changes positions, it will stop. I've had the vet run numerous tests and they found nothing. She said the next step would be to see a neurologist and I'm concerned that I will spend a ton of money and they won't find out anything either. So basically I have no answers but maybe this will prevent a lot of folks from putting their baby through unnecessary tests. Any help you all could provide would be appreciated.

CRICKET STARTED TO SPASM A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, I LOOKED ON THIS SITE TO SEE IF OTHER PEOPLE WERE HAVING SIMILAR PROBLEMS AND FOUND THAT THERE WERE SEVERAL OTHER CASES WITH NO POSITIVE OUTCOMES. WE TOOK CRICKET TO THE VET AND HE PRESCRIBED VETALOG L.5 MG. WE STARTED GIVING IT TO HIM DAILY FOR 3 DAYS THEN EVERY OTHER DAY UNTIL THE REMAINING 7 PILLS WERE GONE. WE HAVE BEEN OUT OF THE PILLS FOR A WEEK NOW AND STILL NO MORE EPISODES. HOPE THIS CONTINUES AND THAT THIS INFORMATION WILL BE HELPFUL TO OTHERS.
