TTA Surgery

Chuck (1) from Arlington Heights, IL (Contact Member) - Tue Feb 9 14:30:48 2010

My youngest Lab, Java, is scheduled for TTA this month. She's very active and the first time I saw her favoring her right rear leg I rushed her to the Vet.

When the surgeon gave the diagnosis as RCCL, my heart sank for Java. I usually regard surgery the same as MRI's - necessary, but not always - so I asked a ton of questions. I never realized how common this is.

I'm interested in anyone's experience with the TTA procedure. Any after-affects? How is your dog doing. Any noticeable differences since the operation?

Thanks.

"TTA Surgery - Do your homework before rushing into it"

Well, I guess I'll respond to my own message. If your dog has been diagnosed with an injury of the cranial cruciate ligament (CCL), do your homework before agreeing to surgery.

I canceled the surgery for Java after doing some research on Tibial Tuberosity Advancement (TTA). As I suspected, there's a lot of controversy about this. It's a money machine for vet surgeons. The actual cost of the procedure runs around $350 - $500. The vet pockets the difference. Vet surgeons always recommend immediate surgery because they know you're likely to see improvement in your dog's leg within 8 - 12 weeks simply by restricting movement and allowing the injury to heal.
